Windows 11 is the officially documented target. Steam metadata lists a 64-bit Windows 11 requirement, and SEGA sells the Complete Edition as a PC game through Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. Steam Deck support is not officially confirmed. The cited product information does not list SteamOS, a Steam Deck Verified or Playable result, or a recommended Proton version. You may be able to experiment with the Windows build on a Deck, but Proton behavior, controls, campaign stability, frame rate, multiplayer and mods remain unverified.
There is also a short-term availability risk. The edition launched on 13 October 2026; on 15 October, PC Gamer reported that SEGA was working with platform holders to remove it from sale while investigating launch problems. Existing owners were reported to retain access. Check the live store page and SEGA Support immediately before buying.

Why Windows 11 is the safer answer
Official operating-system target
The strongest compatibility evidence is the Steam listing’s Windows 11 64-bit requirement. SEGA describes the release as a PC title and lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG as Windows storefronts. That is a direct match for a standard 64-bit Windows 11 installation, unlike a Steam Deck running SteamOS.

Before purchasing, open the complete, live Steam listing and compare its processor, graphics, memory and storage requirements with your machine. No independent benchmark or repeatable performance test is established here, so claims about particular frame rates or settings would be speculation.

What the 64-bit upgrade changes
SEGA lists a 64-bit upgrade among the Complete Edition’s technical changes. A 64-bit build is designed for a modern 64-bit Windows environment and avoids the old 32-bit software ceiling. It does not, by itself, guarantee higher frame rates or eliminate driver, overlay or mod conflicts. It does mean that an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 11 installation is the intended baseline rather than an older 32-bit operating system.
Installing on Windows 11
- Confirm that Windows 11 is 64-bit and that your hardware satisfies the current storefront listing.
- Check the edition’s current sale status. The post-launch removal investigation means the purchase button may not be available on every platform while SEGA and platform holders resolve launch issues.
- Install through the storefront where you own the game: Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or GOG. Each purchase is the Complete Edition package for that storefront.
- Launch once without adding mods. This separates a base-installation problem from a mod problem.
- After the first successful start, update Windows and your graphics driver through their normal vendor channels, then re-test before changing graphics or compatibility settings.
If the game fails before reaching the menu, use the storefront’s file-repair or file-verification function, temporarily disable overlays and third-party injectors, and test again with a clean installation. Those are general Windows troubleshooting steps, not guarantees specific to this release. If the failure began after launch, consult the current SEGA Support notice because the October 2026 investigation may account for issues that local fixes cannot resolve.
What Steam Deck support actually means here
No official SteamOS or Deck confirmation
The Complete Edition’s official platform description says PC and names the four Windows storefronts. It does not list SteamOS or Linux, and the cited Steam metadata does not show a Steam Deck Verified or Playable result. That supports the precise conclusion “not officially confirmed for Steam Deck,” not the stronger claim that the game can never launch there.

Why Proton remains uncertain
On a Steam Deck, a Windows game normally relies on Valve’s Proton compatibility layer unless a native Linux or SteamOS build exists. SEGA has not published a Proton version recommendation for this edition. Consequently, several separate questions are unanswered: whether the launcher reaches the main menu, whether the controls map correctly, whether long campaigns remain stable, whether large battles maintain acceptable performance, whether multiplayer connects reliably, and whether Mod.io functions correctly under Proton.
An older SHOGUN 2 installation working on a Deck would not prove that the Complete Edition works. The new release is a separate 64-bit build with modernized controls, integrated Mod.io support and other code changes, so compatibility results do not automatically transfer between editions.

If you already own a Steam Deck and want to test it
Testing is reasonable for an existing owner, but approach it as a compatibility experiment. Do not buy solely on the assumption that a different Total War title or the original SHOGUN 2 works on your Deck.

- Check ownership and availability first. Open the live Steam page on the Deck or another device. A missing purchase option may reflect SEGA’s reported post-launch removal investigation rather than a problem with your account.
- Install the Complete Edition without mods. Start with the unmodified base package so any crash or missing text is reproducible.
- Use Steam’s compatibility settings only as an experiment. If Steam offers a Proton selection under the game’s Properties, test one available version at a time and record which setting you used. There is no SEGA-published Proton version to treat as authoritative.
- Test the complete path, not just the opening screen. Enter a campaign, load a battle, move units, change the camera, save and reload, and leave the game running long enough to expose stability problems. Reaching the menu alone does not establish campaign compatibility.
- Test controls and text at your normal viewing distance. The Complete Edition adds modernized controls and 1440p/4K interface scaling, but no Deck-specific layout or readability result is documented.
- Test network and mods separately. If you need two-to-eight-player multiplayer or Mod.io content, test those after the unmodified single-player path works. A successful campaign launch does not prove either feature works through Proton.
- Keep the original installation available. The original game and Complete Edition have different mod systems. Removing the original to make room can also remove the one environment where your existing mods are known to work.
If the game crashes, produces unusable controls or fails to connect, remove the forced Proton setting and return to the default compatibility choice before seeking support. Report the exact Deck model, SteamOS version, Proton selection and failure point; those details are more useful than a simple “it does not work” report.
What the Complete Edition includes
SEGA calls this release an updated and enhanced version of SHOGUN 2 and all its DLC in one package. The content and technical changes listed for the 2026 edition are:
- All associated DLC, including Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai.
- Improved lighting, shadows and textures.
- User-interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays.
- Modernized controls.
- Japanese and Chinese voice acting, plus full text localization.
- More than 50 newly playable minor factions.
- Integrated Mod.io support.
- A 64-bit upgrade.
- Multiplayer for two to eight players.
On Steam, the purchase also includes the original SHOGUN 2 and its DLC except the Blood Pack. Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG purchases include the Complete Edition only, according to SEGA’s package description. That storefront distinction matters if you want the original executable, its separate workshop ecosystem or a particular DLC entitlement.

Mods: the most important separation between editions
SEGA’s FAQ states: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is launching with integrated mod support with Mod.IO, therefore mods from the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition.” In practical terms, an old mod that worked with the original game should not be copied into the Complete Edition’s folders or expected to appear automatically.
Original-game mods remain associated with the original SHOGUN 2 installation. Complete Edition users should obtain versions made for its Mod.io integration when such versions exist. Because Mod.io behavior on Steam Deck through Proton has not been verified, a mod that works on Windows 11 still cannot be assumed to work on SteamOS.
Launch date, price and changing availability
SEGA’s pre-launch FAQ gives 13 October 2026 as the release date. The launch price was £34.99 in the United Kingdom, €39.99 in the euro area and $39.99 in the United States. These are launch figures, not a promise of the current regional price. Steam owners of the original game received a time-limited 75% loyalty discount that was scheduled to end on 12 November 2026.

On 15 October 2026, PC Gamer reported SEGA saying that the current experience was not where it needed to be and that the company was working with platform holders to remove the edition from sale while investigating launch problems. The report also said existing owners would retain access and be able to play. Store status can change quickly, so verify the live listing, purchase button, refund terms and SEGA Support announcement for your region before committing money.
Windows 11 troubleshooting checklist
- System mismatch: Confirm that the operating system is 64-bit Windows 11 and compare every listed CPU, GPU, memory and storage requirement, not just the OS name.
- First-launch failure: Start with no mods or overlays, then use the storefront’s file-verification or repair function.
- Graphics instability: Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU, reboot, and test the clean installation before changing several settings at once.
- Mod-related crashes: Remove Complete Edition mods and retest. Never assume an original SHOGUN 2 mod is compatible.
- Persistent launch problems: Check SEGA’s current support notice because the October 2026 investigation may indicate a wider release issue rather than a local Windows configuration fault.
These checks can identify common PC-side causes, but there is no published independent benchmark or universal fix that establishes a particular graphics preset, frame rate or hardware combination for this edition.
Final answer
Choose Windows 11 if you want the environment explicitly documented by the publisher and Steam: a 64-bit Windows 11 PC installation is the supported baseline. Choose Steam Deck only if you accept an unverified Proton experiment and are prepared to test single-player, controls, multiplayer and Mod.io independently. The Complete Edition is not a drop-in replacement for the original game’s mod setup, and its post-launch sale status was unstable as of 18 October 2026.
