Yes—but only on the original PlayStation 2 and Xbox releases, and only while their online services were operating. The PS2 version supported up to eight online players, while the original Xbox version supported up to 16 through Xbox Live. The game’s manual also documents built-in voice over IP. Those official services are now gone: PS2 servers were terminated and the original Xbox Live service ended in 2010.
The 2024 PS4/PS5 rerelease is a different case. Its PlayStation Store page labels it “Offline play enabled” and lists “1 – 4 players,” so it should be treated as a local-only version. You can still play Future Perfect with friends through split-screen, and LAN play remains relevant to compatible original-console setups, but buying the rerelease does not restore official online matchmaking.
Which versions of TimeSplitters: Future Perfect had online multiplayer?
The answer depends entirely on the platform. Future Perfect launched in 2005 for PlayStation 2, the original Xbox and Nintendo GameCube. Only the PS2 and Xbox editions included an online mode.

| Version | Online multiplayer | Voice chat | What is available now |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 2 original | Yes at launch; up to 8 online players | Built-in voice over IP documented in the manual | Official servers terminated; local and LAN play remain |
| Original Xbox | Yes at launch; up to 16 Xbox Live players | Built-in voice over IP documented in the manual | Original Xbox Live discontinued; local and LAN play remain |
| GameCube | No online mode | No online voice feature documented | Local multiplayer only |
| PS4/PS5 rerelease (2024) | No native online mode advertised | No built-in game voice feature advertised | 1–4 local/offline players; console party chat is separate |
This distinction matters when buying a used copy. The PS2 and Xbox boxes may advertise online play because that feature existed at release, but the network services those descriptions refer to are no longer running. The GameCube disc never had online multiplayer, regardless of which accessories or broadband equipment you own.

How online play worked on the original PS2 and Xbox
PlayStation 2
The PS2 build included an online multiplayer mode with room for as many as eight players. It was designed for the network service available during the console’s commercial life, not for a modern account-based matchmaking system. A compatible network connection, an online-enabled console setup and the game’s network mode were required at the time.
When those servers were active, online play was separate from ordinary couch multiplayer. You could still use split-screen with people in the same room, and LAN play is the remaining option for compatible local networks. LAN play does not mean the old central service has returned; it connects consoles directly or through a local network rather than through the terminated PS2 service.
Original Xbox
The original Xbox release used Xbox Live and supported up to 16 players online. That was the largest online player count among the console versions. The service was tied to the original Xbox Live infrastructure, not to the modern Xbox network used by current consoles.

The Xbox edition also retains local multiplayer options. If you are assembling a period-correct setup, treat LAN as a separate, local-network feature and do not confuse it with Xbox Live matchmaking. The original Xbox service shutdown removed the central online component, but it did not remove the game’s split-screen or local-network modes from the disc.

GameCube
The GameCube edition has no online multiplayer mode. It is therefore not a matter of finding the right adapter, account or server: the version itself was built for local multiplayer. No online voice feature is documented for this release either.
Does Future Perfect have voice chat?
Yes, the original network-capable versions included voice over IP. The game manual gives the direct instruction: Press the L3 button to enable voice over IP.
L3 means pressing the left analog stick, so the feature was enabled from the controller rather than through a modern console-level party interface.
What the manual’s instruction means
The instruction confirms that voice chat was a game feature, not merely a feature of Xbox Live or a separate headset application. It was intended for the online PS2 and original Xbox modes. To use it, players needed the relevant console voice hardware and a functioning online session; the manual’s button command alone cannot create a connection after the official services have closed.

Why official online play no longer works
PS2 service termination
The original PS2 online servers were terminated. Once that infrastructure was taken offline, the PS2 version could no longer use its official online matchmaking and session service. The game itself still contains its network menus and voice-over-IP support, but those menus cannot reconnect to a service that no longer exists.
Original Xbox Live ended in 2010
Microsoft discontinued the original Xbox Live service in 2010. Future Perfect’s Xbox Live functionality depended on that first-generation service, so an original Xbox copy cannot sign in to the same online system that supported the game at launch.
What remains possible
Officially, the practical choices are local multiplayer and LAN play on hardware and network arrangements that support them. Split-screen is the simplest option because it needs no external service. LAN play requires multiple compatible consoles, copies of the appropriate edition and a working local network; the exact hardware arrangement is outside the modern PS4/PS5 rerelease.
Can you play Future Perfect online on PS5?
Not through the 2024 PS4/PS5 rerelease’s own networking. The PlayStation Store listing explicitly says “Offline play enabled” and specifies “1 – 4 players.” Those labels describe local or offline use, not internet matchmaking.

What “1–4 players” means here
The player count should be read as a local-player allowance for the rerelease. It does not preserve the eight-player PS2 online capacity or add a new four-player internet mode. If you want to play with friends on PS5, plan on sharing the console and screen for supported local modes.
Party chat is separate
PS5 system party chat can provide conversation between people in a console party, subject to Sony’s account and privacy controls. It does not turn an offline game into an online multiplayer game, synchronize separate copies of Future Perfect or provide in-game matchmaking. You would still be playing the rerelease locally.
What about Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S?
The Xbox product listing identifies the original 2005 release as developed by Free Radical Design and published by Deep Silver, and confirms backward-compatible play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That compatibility makes the title playable on newer Xbox hardware, but it should not be interpreted as a restoration of the original Xbox Live service.

Are unofficial online methods possible?
Community members sometimes investigate emulators or LAN-tunneling services to connect older multiplayer games. Such arrangements are unofficial, can require specific disc images or console hardware, and may change as software and network services change. They are not supported by the original publisher or by the PS4/PS5 store release.
Before attempting one, verify the current documentation for the exact platform, emulator version, game revision and network method. Check local laws and the service’s terms, and do not assume that a guide for another TimeSplitters game applies to Future Perfect. An unofficial tunnel can emulate a local network connection; it cannot make the discontinued PS2 or original Xbox servers operational again.
Which edition should you choose?
| Your goal | Most suitable edition | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Play alone or with friends on one modern PlayStation | PS4/PS5 rerelease | Offline/local play only; listed as 1–4 players |
| Experience the original online-capable build | Original PS2 or Xbox version | Official online services are no longer available |
| Use Nintendo hardware | GameCube version | No online mode; local multiplayer only |
| Use modern Xbox hardware | Backward-compatible Xbox version on Xbox One or Series X|S | Do not expect original Xbox Live matchmaking; not playable on Xbox 360 |
| Use original-console LAN | Compatible PS2 or Xbox setup | Requires multiple systems, copies and a working local network |
If your priority is simply playing Future Perfect today, the rerelease is the least complicated route for local sessions on PlayStation. If your priority is preserving the original online experience, no currently sold edition restores the official service. A used PS2 or Xbox copy can provide the original modes and documented voice feature, but purchasing the disc alone does not provide servers, accounts or matchmaking.
Practical checks before buying or setting up
- Identify the platform first. A PS2 or original Xbox copy had online support; a GameCube copy did not.
- Separate launch features from current availability. “Online multiplayer” on an old box describes the game’s original capability, not a live service guarantee.
- Check the edition’s player label. The PS4/PS5 listing’s “Offline play enabled” and “1 – 4 players” are the clearest indicators of its current scope.
- Plan the connection type. Split-screen needs one console and a display; LAN requires multiple compatible systems and a local network; internet matchmaking is no longer an official option.
- Bring the right voice hardware for originals. The L3 command applies to the documented in-game voice feature, but it still depends on a working network session and compatible headset equipment.
- Do not use Xbox 360 as a workaround. The Xbox listing specifically excludes that console.
- Treat emulation and tunneling as experimental. Verify current, platform-specific instructions instead of assuming that an unofficial method is supported or permanent.
Bottom line for each common question
Does TimeSplitters: Future Perfect have online multiplayer?
The original PS2 and Xbox versions did. The GameCube version did not, and the PS4/PS5 rerelease is presented as offline-only.
Can I play Future Perfect online on PS5?
No native online multiplayer is advertised for the PS4/PS5 rerelease. Use local multiplayer, with optional console party chat for conversation.
Does the PS2 version have voice chat?
Yes. The manual documents voice over IP and instructs players to press L3 to enable it, but the original online service is no longer available.
Can I still play with friends?
Yes, through split-screen and, where your original-console equipment supports it, LAN. Official internet matchmaking is not available.
