Usually, no. For a game installed on your Windows PC through the Xbox app, the app normally acts as the library, installer and launcher. After the game has started, you can generally minimize or close the Xbox app window and continue playing.

That guidance applies to local PC games, not every Xbox feature. Cloud gaming and remote play use a remote stream rather than a game installed on your computer, and Microsoft’s published documentation does not clearly state what happens to an active stream when you close the app. Leave the app open for those sessions unless you have already confirmed that closing it works on your setup.

The answer depends on how the game is running

The Xbox PC app supports several different play paths. Treating them as identical causes most of the confusion about whether the window must remain open.

Play mode Where the game runs What the app is doing Close-window guidance
Installed PC game Your Windows PC Library, download manager, license check and launcher You can normally minimize or close the app after the game reaches its main menu.
Cloud gaming A remote Xbox or cloud server Starts and presents an interactive video stream Microsoft documentation does not explicitly establish whether closing the app ends an active stream. Keep it open unless you have tested otherwise.
Remote play Your own Xbox console, streamed to the PC Starts and presents the console session The reviewed documentation does not specify the result of closing the app during an active session. Keeping it open is the safer choice.

The Xbox PC app describes browsing the Game Pass catalog, downloading and launching games, cloud gaming, remote play, chat, notifications and an aggregated library. Those are distinct functions, so the fact that the app starts a game does not mean it must remain the active foreground program for every type of play.

Locally installed PC games: closing the app is normally fine

When a game is downloaded to the PC, the game executable runs locally. The Xbox app has already performed its most visible job when it passes control to that executable. In ordinary desktop use, closing the launcher window should not close the game process.

How to close it after launching

  1. Open the Xbox app and select the installed game in your library.
  2. Select Play and wait for the game’s own window to appear.
  3. Wait until the game reaches its title screen, main menu or another point showing that it has finished starting.
  4. Press Alt+Tab to return to the desktop, or use the app’s minimize button.
  5. Close the Xbox app window. Do not use the game’s own Quit command.
  6. Return to the game with Alt+Tab or the taskbar.

If the game remains visible and responsive after the app closes, the launcher was not needed for the running session. You can also leave the app minimized if you want quick access to your library without keeping its window in front.

Why a particular game may behave differently

The general behavior is not a guarantee for every title. A game can require an Xbox sign-in, a current Game Pass entitlement or an online service while it is running. Some titles perform an entitlement or account check at launch; others contact online services later for multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements or downloadable content.

  • Sign-in: If the game asks you to authenticate again, complete that prompt rather than assuming the closed app caused a failure.
  • Subscription entitlement: A Game Pass game can stop launching when the account no longer has the required subscription or when the entitlement cannot be verified.
  • Online services: A locally installed game may start offline but lose multiplayer, social, synchronization or other connected features when its service is unavailable.
  • Game-specific launchers: A title may open another publisher’s launcher or account window. That is separate from the Xbox app and can have its own requirement to stay signed in.

If a game closes immediately when you close the Xbox app, reopen the app and test again. That result indicates a title-, account- or service-specific dependency; it does not establish a universal requirement for all Xbox PC games.

Cloud gaming and remote play are different

With cloud gaming, the game is rendered on a remote service and your PC receives an interactive video stream. With remote play, your Xbox console renders the game and sends the session to your PC. In both cases, the app is not merely a launcher: it is part of the path that starts and presents the remote session.

Microsoft’s Xbox PC app material confirms that cloud gaming and remote play are supported, but it does not provide a clear rule saying that a stream continues after the app window is closed. Because the official behavior is not specified, do not treat the local-game answer as proof that a cloud session will survive.

Practical rule for a cloud session

  1. Start cloud gaming or remote play from the Xbox app.
  2. Wait until the game is fully interactive and confirm that controller or keyboard input reaches it.
  3. Keep the Xbox app open while you play unless you have already verified that minimizing or closing it leaves the stream active.
  4. If you want to reduce clutter, minimize the app rather than closing it. This preserves the active client while removing the window from view.

If closing the app disconnects the stream, reopen it and start a new session. Any unsaved progress can be lost, just as it can after a network interruption, so use the game’s save command before experimenting.

What you lose when the app is closed

Closing the window affects app features even when it does not affect a locally running game. The Xbox app provides social activity, chat and notifications in addition to game management.

Chat and friends

Microsoft describes Game Bar as an in-game route for continuing an Xbox conversation. Press Win+G while playing to open the Game Bar overlay and check whether the chat or social widget you need is available. This is a separate Windows gaming interface; it is not the same as leaving the full Xbox app window open.

Notifications

Closing the app can remove its app-specific notification surface. Windows may still show system notifications, and the game may show its own messages, but do not assume that every Xbox friend, chat or activity alert will appear after the app is closed.

Library and management tasks

You cannot browse the Game Pass catalog, queue another download or manage an installation from a closed window. Those tasks can wait until you reopen the app and do not normally determine whether the current local game keeps running.

Do not confuse normal desktop play with Xbox mode

Windows also has an Xbox mode, a controller-oriented full-screen experience documented by Microsoft in its Windows Gaming: Full screen experience support article. Xbox mode uses a gaming home app as a launcher and runs games full screen. It is a Windows experience, not simply the ordinary Xbox PC app window enlarged.

Microsoft says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. In that mode, you can switch among open apps and games through Task View. On supported handheld configurations, a startup option can limit background processes to improve gaming performance.

Those controls describe how Xbox mode manages a full-screen, controller-first environment. They do not prove that the Xbox app must remain open during regular Windows desktop play. If you are using the standard desktop, use the local-versus-streaming distinction above rather than applying Xbox mode’s background-process behavior to every game.

Windows requirements and controllers

The Xbox PC app page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher as the app requirement and notes that individual game requirements vary. Check the current requirement on the official Xbox PC app page before troubleshooting an installation, because app requirements can change.

PC Game Pass or another Xbox Game Pass entitlement can determine whether you are allowed to download and play a catalog title. The subscription explains access to the game; it does not by itself create a requirement to keep the Xbox app window open after a locally installed game has launched.

An Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional supported Bluetooth controller for Windows gaming, as noted in Microsoft’s PC gaming on Windows 11 overview. A controller can make Xbox mode easier to navigate, but it has no effect on whether the Xbox PC app needs to remain open. Keyboard-and-mouse play and controller play follow the same local-versus-streaming distinction.

A safe way to test your own setup

Because games differ, a short controlled test is more useful than assuming that every title follows the same rule.

  1. Start with a locally installed game rather than a cloud or remote session.
  2. Launch it from the Xbox app and wait for the main menu.
  3. Save or pause at a point where losing the session will not discard meaningful progress.
  4. Switch to the desktop and close the Xbox app.
  5. Play for several minutes, then check a function that matters to you, such as saving, achievements or multiplayer.
  6. Reopen the app if you need library management, Xbox chat or notifications that are not available through Game Bar.

Run a separate test for cloud gaming or remote play. Keep a save point available, minimize the app first and observe whether the stream remains responsive. Only test closing the app completely after you know that a disconnect will not cost progress.

When the app itself will not start

An Xbox app startup failure is a different problem from the app closing after a game launches. Do not keep the app open as a supposed performance fix, and do not install a PC cleaner merely because a game does not start.

In a Microsoft Q&A thread begun on February 25, 2026, a Microsoft External Staff moderator responding to an Xbox PC app startup issue recommended re-enabling Xbox services and using the Gaming Services Repair Tool. Follow the current instructions in the Microsoft Q&A support thread if the app is stuck at startup.

After repairing the app, launch the game again and repeat the local-game test. If the game only works while the app window remains open, record the title, account type, subscription status and whether the game is local, cloud or remote play before seeking title-specific support. Those details identify a game or service dependency more accurately than the fact that the launcher was visible.

Bottom line for each common question

  • “Can I close the Xbox app after launching a game?” Yes, normally, when the game is installed locally and has finished starting.
  • “Will my Game Pass game keep running if I close the app?” Usually, for a locally installed title, but the game can still depend on sign-in, entitlement checks or online services.
  • “Do I have to leave the Xbox app open for cloud gaming?” The official material does not clearly answer what closing the app does to an active stream, so leave it open or minimized unless you have verified your setup.
