No—not universally. The answer depends on which release you mean. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released on September 29, 2026, is available on PC as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, so buying a next-generation console is not required. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One remain on their previous-generation versions.
The phrase “new console upgrade” is also used for the December 2022 next-gen update. That update’s dedicated console features require PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S; PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch received a separate update with additions and improvements. The rest of this guide separates those two releases so you can identify the exact hardware and ownership path that applies to you.
First, identify which Witcher 3 upgrade you mean
Two different releases are commonly described as an upgrade. They have different platform lists and different entitlement rules.
2026 Remastered edition
CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on August 25, 2026, with a September 29, 2026 release date. The publisher’s current US product page marks it “OUT NOW” and lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. This is a newer edition, not merely the 2022 patch applied to every older console.

The announcement says the Remastered edition is a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It also says Nintendo Switch owners can claim Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2 when that version releases there. That wording is platform-specific; it does not promise that every previous owner on every platform receives the edition automatically.
2022 next-gen update
The earlier update launched on December 14, 2022. Its dedicated next-generation console version targeted PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while PC received the corresponding technical features. CD PROJEKT RED’s November 14, 2022 announcement described that update as free for everyone who already owned any version of the game.
PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch were not abandoned. They received a separate update with selected additions and improvements, but they did not become the dedicated PS5/Xbox Series version. When someone says “the next-gen update,” they are usually referring to the 2022 release; when they say “Remastered,” they mean the 2026 edition.

Do you need a next-generation console for Remastered?
Only if your preferred way to play is the console edition on hardware that supports it. A next-generation console is not a universal requirement because the 2026 edition also supports PC.
If you play on PC
You do not need a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2. The Remastered platform list includes PC, and the publisher names GOG, Steam and Epic Games Store in its free-upgrade entitlement. Your upgrade is handled through the store account that owns the game. The available material does not establish a single PC hardware specification, so check the current store listing or publisher requirements for your particular computer rather than assuming any PC will run the new edition.

If you already have a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S
You already have the console generation required for both the 2022 dedicated update and the 2026 console edition. The practical question is entitlement: use the account that owns the game, and follow the store’s update or download prompt. For Xbox, the 2022 support instructions specifically direct Series X|S players to update to patch 4.0 to receive the dedicated next-gen features.
If you own only a PS4 or Xbox One
You can still play The Witcher 3 on that console. The official US product page says those versions remain unchanged as Remastered platforms, apart from making the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions available free. They are not listed as Remastered platforms, so do not treat a PS4 or Xbox One update as access to the 2026 edition.
If you own the original Nintendo Switch
The original Switch received a separate update associated with the 2022 release. The 2026 Remastered platform list names Nintendo Switch 2, and the publisher says Switch owners can claim Remastered on Switch 2 when it releases there. That is a different entitlement and hardware path from continuing to play the Switch version you already own.
How ownership affects the 2022 PlayStation upgrade
PlayStation has an important distinction between digital ownership and a PS4 disc. The dedicated PS5 version must be downloaded manually; it is not necessarily installed simply because the PS4 game is already on the console.
Digital PS4 or PS5 owners
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the game.
- Open your game library or the game’s store page on the PS5.
- Choose the PS5 version or next-gen upgrade option rather than launching only the PS4 version.
- Download the base-game update. If you own Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine, download those expansions separately when their listings appear.
The exact store labels can change, but the key step is selecting the dedicated PS5 product. The publisher’s support guidance distinguishes the base-game entitlement from separately downloaded expansions.

PS4 disc owners
A PS4 disc owner needs a PS5 with a disc drive. CD PROJEKT RED’s support instructions require the disc to be inserted to install and play the upgraded version, because the disc serves as the license check.

- Open the game hub or library entry and select the PS5 upgrade option.
- Download the PS5 version and any separately owned expansions.
- Leave the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play; removing it removes the license check.
A PS4 disc cannot provide the license on a disc-free PS5 Digital Edition. The publisher explicitly says that the disc must be used in a PS5 with a drive, so buying or owning the disc alone does not make the Digital Edition eligible.
Why the disc-drive detail matters
This is not a performance limitation. It is an ownership verification issue. A PS5 Digital Edition has no optical drive in which to verify the PS4 disc, so the console cannot use that physical copy as its license. A digitally owned copy follows the digital-account path instead.
How the 2022 Xbox upgrade works
On Xbox Series X|S, the publisher’s support instructions say to update the game to patch 4.0 to receive the dedicated next-gen features. Use the Xbox account that owns the game, install the available update, and confirm that the Series version is selected if the system presents more than one version.
Xbox One owners can continue using the Xbox One version. Installing an update on that console does not turn it into the Series X|S edition, and the 2026 Remastered platform list does not include Xbox One.

How the 2026 Remastered entitlement is described
The August 2026 announcement uses a narrower list than the 2022 “any version” wording. It says Remastered will be available as a free upgrade to owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That means you should check the account and platform that owns your copy before assuming eligibility.
PC storefront owners
Sign in to the storefront account that owns the game and look for the Remastered edition in your library. If the store presents separate products, choose Remastered rather than the legacy listing. The announcement names the three PC storefronts above; ownership on another PC service is not established by the publisher statement quoted here.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners
Use the console account that owns the game, open the game’s store or library page, and select the Remastered edition or upgrade prompt. Keep the 2022 and 2026 names separate in the interface: a listing for the 2022 next-gen version is not automatically proof that the 2026 Remastered edition has been installed.
Nintendo Switch owners moving to Switch 2
The publisher says Nintendo Switch owners can claim Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2 when that version releases there. Because the current page lists Switch 2 rather than the original Switch, verify the Switch 2 release and account-transfer instructions shown by Nintendo and CD PROJEKT RED at the time you claim it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling every update “Remastered”
The 2022 update and the 2026 Remastered edition are separate releases. Before troubleshooting, check the title shown in your library and the console generation on which you are playing.

Assuming “free” means every platform gets the same product
Free upgrade language still has conditions. The 2026 announcement names specific PC storefronts and current-generation consoles, while PS4 and Xbox One remain on their previous-generation versions. Treat the platform list as the eligibility boundary.
Expecting a PS4 disc to work on a PS5 Digital Edition
It cannot supply the required license without a disc drive. Use a PS5 with a drive for that physical-copy route, or use a digital entitlement instead.
Installing the base game but not the expansions
For the 2022 PlayStation path, the base game and expansions are downloaded separately when owned. If an expansion is missing, return to the store page and check its individual download entry rather than reinstalling the base game.

A new console may be necessary for someone who wants the dedicated console edition and currently owns only a PS4 or Xbox One, but it is not a blanket requirement. First identify whether PC meets your needs, whether your existing account qualifies, and whether your copy is physical or digital.

Bottom line for buyers and existing owners
If your question is about the 2026 Remastered edition, a next-generation console is optional because PC is supported. For console play, the listed hardware is PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch 2; PS4 and Xbox One remain on their earlier versions.
If your question is about the 2022 next-gen update, the dedicated console features require PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, while PC also supports them. PS4, Xbox One and Switch received a separate update. The one hardware detail most likely to block an otherwise eligible player is a PS4 disc on a PS5 Digital Edition: that physical copy requires a PS5 with a disc drive.
