No. The Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic edition sold for Nintendo Switch 2 is a Switch 2-only product and will not run on an original Nintendo Switch. Owners of the older console must buy the separately listed Nintendo Switch edition. Nintendo also warns that save data and additional content cannot move between the two editions.
Which version works with which console?
Nintendo treats these as two separate products rather than one game with an optional upgrade. The Switch 2 listing identifies its software as playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. The original-console listing is a Nintendo Switch product that can also run on Switch 2, while a separate Switch 2-exclusive version is available.
| Edition | Required hardware | Can it run on an original Nintendo Switch? | Save and additional-content relationship | Purchase target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (Nintendo Switch 2 edition) | Nintendo Switch 2 | No. Nintendo labels it “only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2.” | Its save data and additional content are not compatible with the Nintendo Switch edition. | Players who own or plan to use Nintendo Switch 2 and want the Switch 2-exclusive product. |
| Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic (Nintendo Switch edition) | Original Nintendo Switch; Nintendo also says it can be played on Nintendo Switch 2. | Yes, this is the edition for the original console. | Progress and additional content are separate from the Switch 2 edition. | Players using an original Nintendo Switch. |
The practical rule is simple: match the store listing to the console that will actually run the game. Buying the Switch 2 listing for an old console does not create a compatibility path, and no dock, controller, memory card or other accessory changes the software requirement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why the Switch 2 edition cannot be used on the old Switch
The restriction is an edition-level requirement, not a performance setting that can be lowered. Nintendo’s product wording is explicit: “This product is only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2.” That means an original Nintendo Switch cannot launch the Switch 2 purchase, even though both editions represent the same Touhou title and share the New Classic name.

A Nintendo Switch 2 can run the original Nintendo Switch edition, according to Nintendo’s listing. That direction of compatibility should not be reversed: the older console does not gain access to software designated for Switch 2. If your console’s system menu or eShop account shows only the Switch 2 product, look specifically for the separately listed Nintendo Switch version before purchasing.
Save data and downloadable content are separate
Nintendo states that “Save data and additional content are not compatible between the two versions.” Treat the editions as independent installs for progression and extras.
What this means when changing consoles
- A save created in the Nintendo Switch edition should not be expected to appear in the Switch 2 edition.
- A save created in the Switch 2 edition should not be expected to appear in the Nintendo Switch edition.
- Any additional content purchased or unlocked for one edition is not a license for the other edition.
- Cloud transfer or a system-to-system migration cannot turn one edition into the other; the incompatibility is between the products themselves.
If you are moving from an original Switch to Switch 2 and want to preserve your existing progress, keep using the Nintendo Switch edition on the Switch 2. Buying the Switch 2-exclusive edition is a new product choice, not an upgrade that carries your old campaign across.

What both editions include
The publisher describes New Classic as a remastered presentation of the game. Its listed enhancements include 1080p visuals, rearranged music by ZUN and an infinite-lives feature. These details describe the New Classic game concept, but they do not erase the hardware and save-data distinction between the two Nintendo listings.
Classic mode
Both editions include a Classic version that preserves the original 2002 gameplay. Classic mode uses Japanese-only text, so players who need English menus or dialogue should remain aware of the mode selected. The presence of Classic mode is not evidence that the Switch 2 product will run on an original Switch; it is a game-mode choice inside each edition.
Core software specifications listed by Nintendo
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch product page lists a 1.3 GB file size, single-player support and TV, tabletop and handheld modes. The listing identifies Alliance Arts as publisher. The Switch 2 product is identified as a digital Nintendo Switch 2 product. File size and play modes do not make the two packages interchangeable.

Release dates: why you may see September 9 or September 10, 2026
Nintendo’s US product pages list September 9, 2026 as the release date. The publisher’s official site lists Thursday, September 10, 2026. These should be read as a regional or date-label difference, not as proof that one edition launches a day later worldwide.
Your eShop’s local release timing, account region and the publisher’s regional calendar determine the date displayed to you. Check the store page for your country before planning a midnight download or assuming that a delayed listing means you selected the wrong edition.
How to buy the correct edition
- Identify the console. Check whether you will play on an original Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. The original model includes the standard Switch hardware family; Nintendo Switch 2 is the newer console designation.
- Open the product details before paying. For an original Switch, choose the listing identified as the Nintendo Switch edition. For Switch 2, decide whether you want the Switch 2-exclusive edition or the original Switch edition, which Nintendo says can also be played on Switch 2.
- Read the platform warning. If the page says “This product is only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2,” it is not the purchase for an original Switch.
- Check the edition name in your cart and library. Do not rely only on the shared Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic wording. Confirm that the platform label says Nintendo Switch when shopping for the older console.
- Download on the intended system. The Nintendo Switch edition is listed as a 1.3 GB download, so leave at least that much usable storage plus the system’s installation overhead. Nintendo Switch 2 owners should verify the displayed size on their regional product page.
Common purchase mistakes and fixes
“I bought the Switch 2 version by mistake.”
An original Switch cannot launch that product. Check your account’s purchase and refund options promptly through the Nintendo eShop support process for your region; eligibility depends on Nintendo’s current policy and the transaction circumstances. Do not buy an accessory expecting it to solve the platform mismatch. The remedy is the separate Nintendo Switch edition.

“The game appears on my Switch 2, but my old progress is missing.”
First identify which edition you opened. The original Nintendo Switch edition can run on Switch 2, while its saves remain distinct from the Switch 2-exclusive edition. Launching the newer product will not automatically import a save from the older one.
“I can see additional content on one version but not the other.”
That behavior is consistent with Nintendo’s warning that additional content is not compatible between editions. Verify that the content and base game belong to the same platform listing before reinstalling or contacting support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The Classic mode is not in English.”
The publisher specifies Japanese-only text for Classic mode. Switch to the New Classic presentation when you need the modernized presentation and its supported text options; do not treat the Japanese text as a download failure.

Which edition should you choose?
You own an original Nintendo Switch
Buy the Nintendo Switch edition. It is the listing intended for your hardware, and it is the only one of these two products that Nintendo identifies as usable on the original console.
You own Nintendo Switch 2 and are starting fresh
You can choose between the Nintendo Switch edition, which Nintendo says also plays on Switch 2, and the Switch 2-exclusive edition. Compare the product descriptions and any edition-specific features shown in your region’s store, then remember that saves and additional content will remain separate.
You are upgrading from Switch to Switch 2
If retaining existing progress matters, continue with the Nintendo Switch edition on the new console. Select the Switch 2-exclusive edition only if you accept starting with a separate save environment and separate additional content.
