Yes for mods and widescreen; not yet for dependable native netplay. BattleShip is a native PC port of the Nintendo 64 release of Super Smash Bros. It supports desktop C-language mods compiled at runtime, optional high-resolution texture packs, widescreen and ultrawide rendering, and local play with up to four controllers. Its advertised rollback netcode and online play remain marked “Work in progress,” so online matches are not a finished feature to plan around. You must also supply a legally obtained ROM that matches the port’s supported region and documented hash because the project does not distribute Nintendo game assets.

What BattleShip is—and what it is not

BattleShip is a native PC port built from a decompilation of the original Nintendo 64 game. The project covers both the US NTSC-U version 1.0 and Japanese releases. Instead of running the game inside an N64 emulator, it uses libultraship for native rendering, audio and input on supported desktop builds. That architecture is why features such as runtime C mods, modern display scaling and selectable graphics backends can be integrated directly into the port.

The repository and release packages omit Nintendo-owned assets. BattleShip therefore cannot be installed as a complete, ready-to-play copy without your own game dump. The ROM must be legally obtained, and its region and file hash must match the version documented for the build you are using. A mismatch can prevent the game from booting or produce behavior that the developers cannot reproduce.

This distinction matters when you see references to “PC netplay.” BattleShip’s planned online mode belongs to the native port itself. An emulator such as Project64 is a separate program with a separate multiplayer path; using an emulator does not mean BattleShip’s own rollback implementation is complete.

Feature status at a glance

Feature BattleShip status What that means in practice
Native mods Supported on desktop C code can be compiled at runtime with TinyCC, loaded without rebuilding the entire port, and hot-reloaded. Function detours and documented engine/fighter events expose a genuine mod interface.
High-resolution textures Optional support Texture packs can be supplied as a ZIP file. GhostlyDark’s SSB Reloaded pack is identified by the project as a supported example and is distributed separately.
Widescreen Supported The feature list explicitly includes full widescreen support, including ultrawide resolutions.
Native online play Work in progress Rollback netcode and online play are listed, but the project labels them “Work in progress.” Treat native netplay as development work rather than a finished service.
Local multiplayer Supported Controller routing supports up to four local pads, including SDL2 controllers and documented adapter paths.
Android scripting Disabled The desktop C-mod workflow does not carry over to Android builds.

How BattleShip’s mod support works

Native C mods, not only configuration tweaks

Desktop builds expose “Native C mod support”: you write a mod in C, compile it at runtime with TinyCC, and load it through the port’s mod system. The README describes hot-reload, function detours and a documented engine/fighter event catalog. In other words, a mod can hook game behavior and respond to engine or fighter events; this is substantially deeper than replacing a few cosmetic files or editing a settings file.

Runtime compilation changes the development loop. A creator can edit the C source, trigger a reload and test the change without producing a fresh full executable for every iteration. Function detours provide a way to intercept or redirect existing behavior, while the event catalog gives mod authors documented points at which game and fighter logic can run. The exact APIs and event names are defined by the project’s documentation and can change with releases, so a mod should be matched to the BattleShip build for which it was written.

Desktop-only scripting caveat

The README says scripting is disabled on Android. That does not mean Android cannot display every visual asset supported elsewhere; it means the native C runtime-mod workflow is not available there. If your goal is experimentation with gameplay logic, hooks or hot reload, use a supported desktop build rather than assuming the Android package has the same scripting surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-resolution texture packs

BattleShip also accepts optional high-resolution texture packs in a ZIP file. GhostlyDark’s SSB Reloaded pack is named as a supported example, but the pack is distributed separately from the port. Texture replacement is therefore an add-on layer, distinct from C mods: it changes supplied artwork rather than adding compiled behavior.

Keep the two systems separate when troubleshooting. A game that starts with original textures but fails after a ZIP is added points to pack placement, pack structure or an unsupported asset, not necessarily to the C-mod loader. Conversely, a gameplay hook that does not load should be checked against the desktop scripting requirement and the mod’s target BattleShip version.

Widescreen and ultrawide display support

BattleShip’s rendering feature list says, “Full widescreen support, including ultrawide resolutions.” You can therefore use a modern 16:9 display and extend the output to wider aspect ratios without treating the port as a fixed 4:3-only presentation.

The same rendering stack lists internal-resolution scaling, MSAA, texture filtering and selectable OpenGL, Metal or Direct3D backends. These options let you tune image quality and compatibility independently of the game’s original Nintendo 64 resolution. Internal scaling determines how much work the renderer performs before presenting the frame; MSAA addresses edge smoothing; texture filtering changes how textures are sampled; and the backend choice can matter when one graphics API behaves better than another on a particular desktop system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aspect-ratio support is not a promise that every third-party asset is perfectly composed at every extreme ultrawide ratio. A modded menu, replacement texture or custom HUD may have been authored around a narrower frame. If the game itself renders correctly but a mod’s text or artwork appears stretched, clipped or oddly positioned, test the original assets and a less extreme aspect ratio before concluding that widescreen support is broken.

Native netplay: the honest status

BattleShip lists “Rollback netcode & online play,” followed by the exact status “Work in progress.” That wording is decisive: native online play is planned and under development, not a finished feature you should rely on for regular matches.

Rollback netcode normally requires synchronized game state, input exchange, prediction and correction when delayed inputs arrive. A project can advertise the subsystem while still lacking a stable user experience, complete matchmaking or release-quality reliability. BattleShip’s status does not establish a usable public service, a supported lobby system or a guaranteed connection method. Until the project changes the status and documents a supported workflow, assume that local play is the dependable multiplayer option.

What you can use now

For people in the same room, controller routing supports up to four pads. That includes SDL2 controllers, native Raphnet adapter channels and native GameCube adapters on desktop. An N64 USB adapter or USB N64-style gamepad is therefore a practical way to reproduce the original control layout on a PC.

Why Project64 is a different answer

Project64’s official support information documents emulator multiplayer for certain games. It says netplay requires network configuration and matching ROM files. This is an emulator-based route, not BattleShip’s native online mode. It may be useful when your priority is trying an emulator workflow for a supported title, but it does not upgrade BattleShip’s “Work in progress” netcode to production status. You also remain responsible for using matching, legally obtained ROM files.

Hardware and software requirements

ROM and regional match

Start with a legal dump of one of the releases BattleShip targets: US NTSC-U version 1.0 or a supported Japanese release. Check the documented hash for the build you intend to run. Region and hash are not interchangeable labels; a file can appear to be the right region while still differing from the exact image expected by the port.

Controllers and adapters

Desktop builds support SDL2 controllers and up to four pads. The project documents native Raphnet adapter channels and native GameCube adapters. A USB N64-style controller can work through a compatible adapter, but the adapter must present inputs in a way the desktop build recognizes.

On Windows, the repository notes that GameCube adapters must use the WinUSB driver. If Windows sees the adapter but BattleShip does not, verify the driver assignment before changing in-game bindings. Replacing the driver can affect other software that expects a different USB driver, so record the original configuration if you need to switch back.

Graphics APIs

The renderer offers OpenGL, Metal or Direct3D choices. Which option is appropriate depends on the operating system and hardware exposed by your build. If one backend fails to start or produces rendering glitches, try another listed backend before assuming the ROM or controller setup is at fault.

First-run setup sequence

  1. Choose a matching build. Select a BattleShip release intended for your desktop operating system and confirm whether it targets the US NTSC-U v1.0 or Japanese release you own.
  2. Prepare the ROM. Use a legally obtained image and verify its documented hash. Do not rename a different revision to make it appear compatible.
  3. Launch with the original game data first. Confirm that the unmodified game boots before adding texture ZIPs or C mods. This isolates basic ROM and renderer problems.
  4. Select a graphics backend. Use the available OpenGL, Metal or Direct3D option, then adjust internal resolution, MSAA and texture filtering to suit your display and performance.
  5. Connect controllers. Pair or plug in SDL2 pads, an N64 USB adapter or a supported GameCube adapter. Route up to four pads and test every button in local multiplayer before troubleshooting mods.
  6. Add visual packs separately. Install an optional high-resolution texture ZIP according to the release documentation. Keep a copy of the original setup so you can remove the pack quickly if a texture causes a crash or visual fault.
  7. Test C mods on desktop. Use a mod written for your BattleShip version, compile it through the TinyCC-based loader and use hot reload as documented. Android users should not expect this scripting path to be available.
  8. Plan multiplayer realistically. Use local four-player routing today. Treat native online play as unfinished unless a later release explicitly changes the project’s status and supplies a supported connection procedure.

BattleShip versus emulator-based play

Comparison point BattleShip native port Emulator workflow such as Project64
Architecture Decompiled game code runs as a native PC port through libultraship. The original game runs inside an N64 emulation environment.
Display features Full widescreen, including ultrawide, with internal scaling, MSAA, filtering and selectable graphics backends. Depends on the emulator’s graphics implementation and per-game configuration; the cited support material establishes multiplayer guidance, not BattleShip’s rendering feature set.
Mod depth Desktop C mods compile at runtime with TinyCC and support hot reload, function detours and documented engine/fighter events; ZIP texture packs are also accepted. Mod behavior depends on emulator-compatible patches, replacement files or game-specific tools rather than BattleShip’s native C interface.
Local controllers Up to four pads, with SDL2, Raphnet channels and native GameCube adapter paths on desktop. Depends on emulator input configuration and the adapters it recognizes.
Native online netcode Listed as rollback netcode and online play, but explicitly “Work in progress.” Project64 documents emulator multiplayer for certain games, with network configuration and matching ROM requirements.
Game files A legal, region-matching ROM with the documented hash is required because Nintendo assets are not bundled. Matching ROM files are also required for the documented netplay workflow.

Troubleshooting common problems

The game will not boot

Recheck the ROM’s region and documented hash first. BattleShip targets specific US NTSC-U v1.0 and Japanese releases; another revision can fail even when the filename looks correct. Remove mods and texture packs, then test the clean ROM with a different available graphics backend.

A controller is detected by Windows but not by BattleShip

For a GameCube adapter on Windows, verify that the required WinUSB driver is installed. For other devices, confirm that the controller appears through the SDL2 path and that each pad is routed to the intended player slot. Test one controller at a time before adding a second, third or fourth device.

The image looks wrong on an ultrawide monitor

Confirm that you are evaluating the base game rather than a modded HUD or replacement texture. BattleShip supports ultrawide output, but a third-party asset may have fixed coordinates or assumptions about a narrower frame. Try a standard widescreen ratio and the original assets to separate port rendering from mod composition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A C mod does nothing

Native C scripting is a desktop feature, not an Android feature. On desktop, check that the mod targets your BattleShip version, that it is being compiled through the documented TinyCC loader and that its event or detour hooks still exist in that release. Start from a clean launch and add one mod at a time.

A texture ZIP causes a crash or missing artwork

Remove the ZIP and verify that the unmodified game works. Then check the pack’s internal structure and compatibility with your release. The project names GhostlyDark’s SSB Reloaded pack as a supported example, but packs are separate downloads and are not part of the BattleShip distribution.

You need online matches now

Native BattleShip netplay is not a finished feature while the project labels rollback netcode and online play “Work in progress.” For an alternative, consult Project64’s documented emulator multiplayer path for games it supports, configure networking as required and use matching ROM files. That choice remains emulation, not BattleShip native netcode.

Who should choose BattleShip?

BattleShip is a strong fit if you want a modern display pipeline, four-player local sessions and a real desktop modding interface rather than a purely cosmetic patch system. It is especially attractive to creators who need runtime C compilation, hot reload, function detours or documented fighter and engine events, and to players who want widescreen or ultrawide output with adjustable resolution and anti-aliasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a poor fit if your main requirement is turnkey online play today. The project’s own status makes native netplay a future-facing feature. Likewise, Android users should not plan a workflow around C scripting, because scripting is disabled there. In every case, keep a legally obtained ROM that matches the documented region and hash, and test the clean port before layering on controllers, texture packs or mods.
