No. The Sony ULT TOWER 5 (SRS-ULT500) has a built-in rechargeable battery, so you can unplug it after charging and play from battery power. Its advertised “20-hour battery life” applies only under Sony’s specified conditions, and the approximately 12.7 kg (28 lb) cabinet is portable for moving between rooms or taking to an event—not a lightweight grab-and-go speaker.
How the Sony ULT TOWER 5 gets power
The ULT TOWER 5 can run from an AC outlet or from its internal rechargeable battery. Sony’s help guide states: “With the built-in battery charged in advance, you can use the speaker solely with battery power.” See Sony’s ULT TOWER 5 charging instructions.
That means the power cord is not required during playback once the battery has enough charge. You can charge the speaker at home, disconnect the cord, and use it where there is no outlet. The battery is built in, so there is no removable battery cartridge to swap during an event. Sony’s documentation does not describe a supported external battery pack or a user-replacement procedure.
The speaker is therefore cordless in operation, but not independent of charging. You must put energy into the internal battery before taking it somewhere without mains power. If you expect a long session, check the charge indicator and allow enough time for a proper top-up rather than treating the “20-hour” label as a guarantee at every setting.

How long the battery lasts
Sony’s “up to 20 hours” claim is a scenario estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for every listening session. The company’s help guide gives three reference results with Bluetooth connected, ULT1 or ULT2 selected, and Battery Care disabled:

These figures come from Sony’s ULT TOWER 5 Help Guide and use Sony’s specified music source. They show why the same speaker can last through a long day at moderate volume yet need an outlet for a loud, illuminated party. Turning the lights on reduces the listed moderate-volume estimate by about eight hours, while maximum volume with lighting reduces it to roughly two hours.
The 20-hour figure is best understood as an upper-end planning reference: Bluetooth connected, volume 16, ULT1 or ULT2, lighting off, and Battery Care disabled. It is not a rating that applies equally to every source, temperature, volume level, or lighting pattern. Sony’s U.S. product page uses the simple “20 hour battery life” headline, while the help guide explains the conditions behind it.
What can shorten playback
Sony says actual playback time varies with volume, the music being played, surrounding temperature, and other settings. Bass-heavy or consistently loud material can therefore produce a different result from the controlled estimate. Lighting also consumes energy. Treat the 20-hour figure as an upper-end reference for moderate listening with the lights off, not as a promise that applies to every mode.
Battery Care mode limits the maximum charge to approximately 90 percent to help extend long-term battery life. Sony notes that playback time is shorter when this mode is enabled. If maximum runtime matters for a particular outing, charge with Battery Care disabled; if reducing long-term battery stress matters more, the lower charge limit is the trade-off.
Sony also recommends the STAMINA setting in the Sound Connect app to reduce battery consumption and extend playback. The help guide does not give a specific number of extra hours for STAMINA, so it should be treated as a battery-saving option rather than a guaranteed runtime increase.

Do not compare the three figures as if they were independent laboratory limits. The 12-hour and two-hour results include lighting, and the two-hour result also uses maximum volume (level 50). A session between those settings will fall somewhere between the reference points, but Sony does not promise a linear formula for estimating every combination.

How to charge it
- Place the speaker near an AC outlet and locate the power connection on the rear.
- Open the rear cap, connect Sony’s supplied AC power cord, and plug the other end into the outlet.
- For a full charge from empty, leave the speaker powered off while charging for approximately three hours, according to Sony.
- When you are ready to use it away from the outlet, disconnect the cord and securely close the rear cap. Closing the cap after disconnecting is required to maintain the speaker’s water resistance.
Sony advises charging the speaker for more than one hour before first use. A short top-up is also useful: ten minutes of charging provides approximately 100 minutes of playback under Sony’s stated conditions—Bluetooth connected, volume 16, ULT1 or ULT2, lights off, and Battery Care disabled. The result will be shorter at higher volume, with lighting, or under different conditions.
The approximately three-hour figure describes charging an empty speaker while it is powered off. It should not be used to promise that every partially charged session will take three hours, nor does the 100-minute quick-charge figure apply to maximum-volume or illuminated playback. For an event, charge well ahead of departure so you are not relying on a short top-up under demanding settings.
Battery care and long-term storage
The ULT TOWER 5 uses a built-in lithium-ion battery. Like other lithium-ion batteries, its capacity gradually declines as it ages and is used. For storage, Sony says to charge the speaker once every six months rather than leaving it unused indefinitely.
If runtime becomes significantly shorter even after a full charge, Sony recommends contacting Sony support or an authorized dealer. Do not assume that a new battery can be installed by the owner: Sony’s reviewed documentation identifies the battery as built in but does not provide a user-replacement method. What “portable” means for this speaker
Unplugged operation does not make the ULT TOWER 5 a lightweight travel speaker. Sony lists a mass of approximately 12.7 kg (28 lb), including the battery, and dimensions of approximately 358 × 534 × 280 mm (14.1 × 21.1 × 11.1 inches). Sony’s specifications page provides those measurements.

Before taking it somewhere, consider the entire route: parking area, stairs, grass, and the distance from the charging outlet. The tower form factor is practical for a party or room change, but its weight can make repeated relocation inconvenient. Battery operation solves the outlet problem; it does not eliminate the physical burden of moving a large cabinet.
Its dimensions also matter when planning storage or transport. Measure a vehicle cargo area, doorway, or shelf rather than relying on the word “portable.” The relevant question is not only whether it can play without a cord, but whether one person can safely carry a 28-pound tower along the intended route.
Planning a session without an outlet
For a long, moderate-volume gathering
Start with a full charge, keep lighting off, and use a moderate volume comparable to Sony’s level-16 test condition. Under those exact conditions, Sony estimates approximately 20 hours. Because music, temperature, and settings affect consumption, leave a time margin rather than planning to use every advertised hour.
If the gathering has a fixed end time, plan backward from it. A full charge gives the most headroom, while Battery Care’s 90-percent ceiling reduces that starting reserve. Keep the Sound Connect app’s STAMINA option in mind if conserving energy is more important than maximum output, but do not assign it an unverified number of extra hours.
For a gathering with lighting
With lighting on at volume 16, Sony’s estimate falls to approximately 12 hours. That is the more relevant planning figure for an illuminated party, assuming the other stated conditions remain the same. If the event may run longer, arrange access to an AC outlet or plan a charging break.

Lighting is an easy setting to overlook because the speaker may appear to be playing normally while consuming substantially more energy. Turning it off is the clearest documented way to move from the 12-hour reference toward the 20-hour reference at the same volume.

Maximum volume is the most demanding documented scenario. With lighting on, Sony estimates approximately two hours at volume level 50. A high-volume event should therefore be planned around mains power, a shorter set, or a lower volume setting; do not use the 20-hour headline as a maximum-volume expectation.
For a loud event, keep the AC cord available even if you begin on battery. The two-hour estimate is approximate and scenario-specific, so temperature, music content, and other settings can reduce it further. A lower volume can be more useful than repeatedly stopping to recharge.
Battery and charging troubleshooting
- The speaker stops sooner than expected: Check whether lighting, maximum or near-maximum volume, Battery Care, or a different music source was used. Sony lists all of these conditions as relevant to the difference between estimates and actual playback.
- You need more play time quickly: A ten-minute charge is rated for approximately 100 minutes only under Sony’s volume-16, lights-off, Battery-Care-disabled conditions. Allow the speaker to charge longer if your settings are more demanding.
- The first session is shorter: Sony advises charging for more than one hour before first use; for a full charge from empty, the powered-off charging time is approximately three hours.
- The battery has degraded: If a full charge still produces significantly less runtime than before, contact Sony support or a dealer as Sony recommends instead of assuming the battery is user-serviceable.
- You disconnect the cord outdoors: Close the rear cap securely after unplugging. Leaving that cap open can compromise the water-resistance protection described in Sony’s charging instructions.
- You are storing it for a season: Recharge the battery once every six months, even if the speaker is not being used regularly.
Should you leave it plugged in?
Leave it connected when you need continuous high-volume playback, bright lighting for many hours, or a predictable runtime longer than the relevant battery estimate. Unplug it when you want to place the speaker away from an outlet, avoid running a cable across a walkway, or move it between locations. There is no requirement to keep it plugged in for ordinary battery playback, provided it has been charged in advance.
The practical decision is therefore two-part: choose the power source based on the length and intensity of the session, then choose the carrying route based on a 12.7 kg tower. The ULT TOWER 5 is genuinely cordless during use, but it is best understood as a movable party speaker rather than a lightweight portable model.
