Yes. The Sonos Era 100 supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth audio streaming, and Apple AirPlay 2. Alexa requires the Sonos and Alexa apps plus the Sonos skill; Bluetooth requires the speaker to be set up on Wi-Fi first; and AirPlay 2 works with Apple devices running iOS 11.4 or later. Sonos also offers an optional wired line-in connection through a separately sold adapter.
This guide explains what each connection can do, the exact setup steps, the microphone controls that affect Alexa, AirPlay’s Siri limitation, and the one specification discrepancy you should know about before relying on a Bluetooth-version number.
Compatibility at a glance
| Connection or service | Works with Era 100? | What you need | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Sonos app, Alexa app, enabled Sonos skill, and active microphone and voice-services controls | Availability varies by country and language |
| Bluetooth audio | Yes | Bluetooth-enabled source and an Era 100 already set up on Wi-Fi in the Sonos app | Pair by holding the speaker’s Bluetooth button until the tone |
| Apple AirPlay 2 | Yes | Compatible Apple device running iOS 11.4 or later | Siri playback through Apple Home is currently limited to Apple Music |
| Wired line-in | Yes, as an extra feature | Separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter and a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable | Not required for Alexa, Bluetooth, or AirPlay |
These capabilities are listed in Sonos’s Era 100 Product Guide and the current Era 100 product listing.
Using Alexa with the Era 100
The Era 100 can accept Alexa voice commands after you connect the speaker to Sonos and link the Sonos skill in Alexa. Voice-service availability is not universal: Amazon and Sonos vary support by country and language, so a feature shown in one market may not appear in another.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by a 47% faster processor, the next-gen dual-tweeter acoustic architecture produces detailed stereo separation while a 25% larger midwoofer deepens the bass.¹
- Place this speaker anywhere and everywhere you want to listen. The compact design fits beautifully on your bookshelf, kitchen counter, desk, or nightstand.
- Stream from all your favorite services over WiFi. Pair a Bluetooth device with the press of a button. Connect a turntable or other audio source using an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.²
- Go from unboxing to unbelievable sound in just a few minutes. Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app.
- With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
What you need before setup
- The Era 100 must be installed in the Sonos app.
- You need the Alexa app on a compatible device and an Amazon account.
- The Sonos skill must be enabled in the Alexa app.
- The speaker’s microphone switch and voice-services control must be in the correct positions.
Alexa setup steps
- Complete the Era 100’s initial installation in the Sonos app and connect it to your Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Alexa app and enable the Sonos skill, then follow Alexa’s account-linking prompts.
- Allow Alexa to discover or add the Sonos speaker when the app presents that option.
- On the speaker, turn on the rear microphone switch.
- Turn on voice services with the top voice-services button and confirm that its indicator light is on.
- Speak an Alexa command near the speaker and check that the Era 100 responds.
Two controls affect voice operation
Sonos separates microphone power from voice-service activation. The rear microphone switch controls power to the microphone hardware. The top voice-services control and its indicator determine whether voice services are active. Sonos states that both the microphone switch and the voice-services indicator light must be on for voice services to work.
That distinction is useful when troubleshooting. If the microphone switch is on but the voice-services light is off, voice control is disabled even though other microphone-dependent functions may remain available. If the rear switch is off, the microphone hardware has no power and Alexa cannot hear commands. The documented control behavior appears in the Sonos Era 100 Product Guide.
Using Bluetooth audio
Bluetooth lets you stream audio from a Bluetooth-enabled phone, tablet, computer, or another source directly to the Era 100. Sonos does not describe Bluetooth as a replacement for initial installation: the guide says the speaker must first be set up on Wi-Fi with the Sonos app before it can play Bluetooth audio.

- Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
- The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
- Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
- Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app
Pair a device for the first time
- Finish Era 100 setup in the Sonos app while the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi.
- On the source device, open Bluetooth settings and make Bluetooth discoverable.
- Press and hold the Era 100’s Bluetooth button until you hear the pairing tone.
- Choose Sonos Era 100 in the source device’s list of available Bluetooth products.
- Start playback on the source device and adjust volume from the source or the speaker.
According to Sonos, the mobile device automatically reconnects the next time after it has been paired. If it does not reconnect, open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and select the Era 100 manually, then repeat the button-hold procedure if the speaker is no longer discoverable.
Bluetooth pairing problems
- The speaker is missing from the list: Confirm that the Era 100 completed Wi-Fi setup in the Sonos app, then hold the Bluetooth button until the tone before searching again.
- Pairing succeeds but there is no sound: Check that playback is active on the source and that the source has selected the Era 100 as its audio output.
- An old phone keeps reconnecting: Disable Bluetooth on that phone temporarily or remove the Era 100 from its saved Bluetooth devices before pairing a different source.
Bluetooth is an audio path; Alexa setup and AirPlay availability are separate functions. Pairing a phone over Bluetooth does not by itself enable Alexa or Apple Home integration.
Using Apple AirPlay 2
Sonos lists AirPlay 2 support for Apple devices running iOS 11.4 or later. From a compatible Apple app, open the playback controls, choose the AirPlay icon, and select the Era 100 as the destination. The exact control can vary by app, but the speaker must appear as an available AirPlay target.

AirPlay requirements and behavior
- Use an Apple device with iOS 11.4 or a later version.
- The Era 100 must already be installed as a Sonos speaker.
- Choose the speaker from an app’s AirPlay output control rather than pairing it as a Bluetooth device.
- AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth are independent connection methods; using one does not disable the other permanently.
Adding Siri and Apple Home
Sonos describes adding compatible Sonos speakers to Apple Home if you want to ask Siri to play music from an Apple device. The product guide places an important limit on that integration: Siri playback through Apple Home is currently limited to Apple Music. AirPlay itself can be selected from compatible apps, but a Siri request for a non-Apple-Music service should not be assumed to work through the documented Apple Home feature.
Recommended Free Tools
If the Era 100 does not appear in AirPlay controls, verify the iOS version first and confirm that the speaker has completed Sonos setup. AirPlay support does not mean that every Apple device or every operating-system release is supported; Sonos’s stated baseline is iOS 11.4 or later.
Alexa, Bluetooth, and AirPlay compared
| Question | Alexa | Bluetooth | AirPlay 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Hands-free voice control | Direct audio streaming from a paired Bluetooth source | Audio streaming from compatible Apple devices |
| Initial setup | Sonos app plus Alexa app and Sonos skill | Sonos app over Wi-Fi, then Bluetooth pairing | Sonos installation, then AirPlay selection on Apple device |
| Speaker controls involved | Rear microphone switch and top voice-services control | Bluetooth button held until pairing tone | No Bluetooth pairing; select the AirPlay destination |
| Documented platform requirement | Service availability varies by country and language | Any Bluetooth-enabled source, after Wi-Fi installation | Apple device running iOS 11.4 or later |
| Special limitation | Voice services require both microphone and voice-services states to be on | Must be initially set up in Sonos over Wi-Fi | Siri playback through Apple Home is currently limited to Apple Music |
Choose Alexa when you want voice commands, Bluetooth when a nearby device is the source and you do not want to use an app’s AirPlay control, and AirPlay when you are using Apple hardware and want the speaker exposed in compatible Apple playback controls.

Does the Era 100 need Wi-Fi?
Yes for initial installation. Sonos specifically says the Era 100 must first be set up on Wi-Fi with the Sonos app before Bluetooth audio can be played. Wi-Fi setup is also the normal foundation for adding the speaker to Sonos services and configuring Alexa. AirPlay devices likewise need the speaker to be installed and available as a Sonos product before you can select it as an AirPlay destination.
After setup, Bluetooth can provide the audio stream from a paired source. That does not remove the requirement for the original Sonos installation, and it does not convert the Era 100 into a speaker that can be configured without the Sonos app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOptional wired audio through line-in
If your source is a turntable, CD player, or another device with a 3.5 mm auxiliary output, the Era 100 can accept a wired signal through line-in. You need the separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter and a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable. The adapter is an additional accessory, not part of the Alexa, Bluetooth, or AirPlay setup.

This option is useful for sources that do not support wireless streaming. It does not add Alexa commands, Bluetooth pairing, or AirPlay support to the source; it simply supplies another audio input to the speaker.
Bluetooth version: why Sonos pages do not match
Do not treat a single Bluetooth-version number as settled across every Era 100 listing. Sonos’s current product page identifies Bluetooth 5.3, while the company’s 2023 fact sheet identifies Bluetooth 5.0. Those documents may describe different hardware revisions or publication snapshots, and the available material does not establish which number applies to every unit.
The reliable compatibility statement is that the Era 100 supports Bluetooth audio streaming. If a purchase or deployment depends on a specific Bluetooth revision, check the specification for the exact hardware and market you are buying rather than assuming that either 5.0 or 5.3 applies universally.
Price and accessory context
The 2023 Sonos fact sheet lists launch pricing of US$249 and £249. Those figures are historical launch prices, not a current price guarantee. The fact sheet does not establish today’s retail price, regional taxes, discounts, or availability.
The Line-In Adapter is sold separately, and the official materials reviewed do not state a current adapter price. You do not need to buy it to use Alexa, Bluetooth, or AirPlay 2.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Alexa does not respond
- Open the Alexa app and confirm that the Sonos skill is enabled and linked.
- Check that the Era 100 is present in the Sonos app.
- Turn on the rear microphone switch.
- Turn on the top voice-services control and verify its indicator light is on.
- Check whether Alexa or the requested voice feature is available in your country and language.
Bluetooth cannot find the speaker
- Verify that initial Sonos setup was completed over Wi-Fi.
- Enable Bluetooth on the source device.
- Hold the Era 100 Bluetooth button until the pairing tone sounds.
- Select Sonos Era 100 from the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
AirPlay is missing
- Confirm that the Apple device runs iOS 11.4 or later.
- Confirm that the Era 100 completed setup in the Sonos app.
- Open playback controls in a compatible Apple app and look for the AirPlay destination selector.
- If you are using Siri through Apple Home, use Apple Music because Sonos currently documents that service as the supported Siri playback source.
Bottom line
The Sonos Era 100 is compatible with all three requested wireless options: Alexa for voice control, Bluetooth for direct device streaming, and AirPlay 2 for compatible Apple devices on iOS 11.4 or later. Set it up in Sonos first, use the microphone and voice-service controls correctly for Alexa, hold the Bluetooth button to pair a source, and use AirPlay controls rather than Bluetooth pairing for Apple streaming. The only extra hardware mentioned is the separately sold Line-In Adapter for wired sources.
