Yes. The Samsung HW-Q990H can connect to a television, game console, and HDMI streaming device through HDMI eARC and HDMI 2.1. Samsung lists HDMI 2.1 video pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz on its Australian specification page, while its Canadian page documents eARC and delivery of sound from the TV and connected devices. Your exact result still depends on the TV’s HDMI ports, audio-passthrough settings, source output settings, and the regional HW-Q990H model.

Basic wired compatibility is separate from Samsung-only features. Wireless Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony require a compatible Samsung television; they are not prerequisites for using the soundbar with another TV brand.

What the HW-Q990H can connect to

Samsung markets the HW-Q990H as an 11.1.4-channel soundbar system. Its HDMI eARC connection is intended to receive audio from the television, including audio generated by devices attached to the TV. The soundbar also has HDMI 2.1 inputs and video pass-through, so a console or streaming box can be connected directly to the bar and have its picture sent onward to the TV.

Samsung describes the arrangement this way: “Your soundbar features HDMI 2.1 and HDMI eARC technology, allowing smooth sound delivery from your TV and its connected devices.” That statement appears on the Samsung Canada HW-Q990H product page. The Samsung Australia specification page additionally lists pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz.

Those specifications establish the connection methods, not a guarantee that every TV and source will expose every audio or gaming feature. HDMI bandwidth, eARC versus ARC, variable-refresh support, copy-protection handshakes, and software settings can change the outcome.

Two wiring layouts that cover most systems

Layout 1: Sources connect to the TV, sound returns over eARC

  1. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI eARC output to the TV’s HDMI port labeled eARC (or ARC if the set has no eARC).
  2. Connect the console and streaming box to the TV’s HDMI inputs.
  3. On the TV, select the external-audio or receiver/soundbar output and enable eARC. Set digital audio output to a passthrough or bitstream mode when that option is available.
  4. Select the TV input containing the console or streaming device. The TV sends the source’s audio back to the HW-Q990H through eARC.

This is usually the simplest arrangement because the TV acts as the input switch. It is also the route that preserves the most flexibility when the TV has the HDMI 2.1 gaming features you need. The limitation is that the TV must pass the desired audio format through eARC; some sets restrict formats on particular inputs or when using ARC instead of eARC.

Layout 2: A source connects to the soundbar, video passes to the TV

  1. Connect the console or HDMI streaming device to an HDMI input on the HW-Q990H.
  2. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output/eARC port to the TV’s HDMI eARC or ARC port.
  3. Switch the soundbar to the corresponding HDMI input.
  4. Set the TV to the HDMI input receiving video from the soundbar and confirm the console or streaming device is outputting the intended resolution and refresh rate.

This route avoids relying on the TV to return source audio. It can be useful when the TV does not pass a particular format from its internal apps or HDMI inputs. Its trade-off is that the soundbar becomes part of the video handshake: the TV input, soundbar input, source, cable, and console settings must all agree on the video mode. Samsung’s published 4K/120 figure applies to the soundbar’s stated pass-through capability, not to every TV’s VRR, ALLM, HDR, or copy-protection implementation.

TV compatibility: what to check before connecting

eARC is the preferred connection

Use the TV port explicitly marked HDMI eARC when available. eARC has more audio bandwidth than legacy ARC and is the connection Samsung documents for sound from the TV and its connected devices. Enable the TV’s eARC control and external-speaker setting; manufacturers use different names, such as HDMI-CEC, receiver, audio system, or passthrough.

If the TV has only ARC, the soundbar may still receive audio, but the reviewed Samsung specifications do not establish that every ARC setup preserves the same formats or feature set as eARC. Optical audio is an even narrower fallback and should be treated as a basic compatibility option rather than an equivalent to HDMI eARC.

TVs from other brands

You do not need a Samsung TV for the HW-Q990H’s ordinary HDMI connection. Any television with a compatible HDMI input can receive video from the bar, and a TV with ARC/eARC can return audio to it. The exact audio formats available depend on the television’s passthrough behavior and the source device.

Samsung-specific enhancements are a separate question. Q-Symphony combines compatible Samsung TV speakers with the soundbar, while wireless Dolby Atmos sends Atmos audio from supported Samsung televisions without an HDMI audio return. These functions are not universal HDMI features and should not be assumed on a non-Samsung set.

Samsung TV year and model conditions

Samsung’s regional pages describe wireless Dolby Atmos compatibility for Samsung TVs from 2022 through 2026, with model-specific conditions. The Australian listing excludes the 32-inch The Frame model. The Canadian page also gives model and feature thresholds for some AI-related functions. Because the suffix and eligibility notes vary by market, check the product page for your country and the exact TV model rather than relying on the year alone.

Feature What the HW-Q990H provides What your TV must provide
Basic TV audio HDMI eARC input and HDMI audio return ARC/eARC output and an external-audio setting
Audio from TV-connected devices Receives the TV’s returned signal Passthrough of the desired format from that HDMI input
Video from a soundbar-connected source HDMI 2.1 pass-through; Samsung Australia states up to 4K at 120 Hz An HDMI input that accepts the selected resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and gaming features
Wireless Dolby Atmos Samsung feature listed for eligible TV generations A compatible Samsung TV model and the required regional conditions
Q-Symphony Works only as part of Samsung’s compatible ecosystem A supported Samsung TV; it is not a generic HDMI capability

Connecting a PlayStation 5, Xbox, or another high-refresh console

A console can use either wiring layout. For a 4K/120 setup, Samsung’s Australian page states that the HW-Q990H supports pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz. That is a ceiling for the soundbar’s published video path, not a certification of every console-and-TV combination.

Choose the route based on the TV’s gaming ports

  • Use console to TV and eARC return when the TV has a suitable HDMI 2.1 gaming input and supports the required audio passthrough. This keeps the console directly attached to the TV’s gaming pipeline and can simplify VRR or ALLM operation.
  • Use console to soundbar and pass-through when the TV’s audio return is the limiting factor or when the soundbar input is the more convenient high-bandwidth path. Confirm that the TV recognizes the resulting 4K/120 signal and that VRR, ALLM, HDR, and other modes remain available.

Console setup checklist

  1. Use an HDMI cable rated for the console’s target mode and connect it to the intended HDMI 2.1 port.
  2. Set the console to automatic video detection first, then select 4K resolution and 120 Hz only after the handshake is stable.
  3. Check the TV’s information screen or input diagnostic to verify the actual resolution and refresh rate, rather than relying on the console’s selected preference.
  4. If the picture drops out, disable one optional mode at a time—such as VRR or HDR—to identify which part of the chain is failing. Reconnect the console directly to the TV as a control test.

Samsung’s published pass-through number does not promise that every TV will carry every gaming feature through the bar. A TV may accept 4K/120 but limit VRR, or it may support VRR on one HDMI input only. Consult the TV manual for port-specific bandwidth and passthrough behavior.

Connecting a streaming box or stick

Any HDMI streaming device can be connected to the TV or to an HDMI input on the HW-Q990H. The physical connection can work even when a particular app does not deliver Dolby Atmos. App support, the title’s soundtrack, the service subscription, the streaming device’s audio setting, and the TV’s passthrough policy all affect the signal.

Streaming device connected to the TV

  1. Plug the device into the TV’s HDMI input.
  2. Return TV audio to the HW-Q990H over eARC (or ARC where that is all the TV provides).
  3. Set the streaming device to an automatic, bitstream, or passthrough audio mode as appropriate for its operating system.
  4. Verify that the TV is not converting the source to stereo or PCM because of a disabled eARC or passthrough option.

Streaming device connected to the soundbar

  1. Plug the device into an HW-Q990H HDMI input.
  2. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV’s eARC/ARC port.
  3. Select the soundbar input and the corresponding TV input.
  4. Check the device’s audio information screen and the soundbar’s incoming-signal display when playing a known Atmos title.

If Atmos is missing, check the service plan and the exact title first. Then check the device’s audio output, the TV’s passthrough setting, and which HDMI route you used. The reviewed Samsung pages do not provide an exhaustive compatibility list for individual streaming devices or apps, so a missing badge is not by itself proof that the HW-Q990H is incompatible.

How audio formats and video modes are negotiated

HDMI devices negotiate capabilities when they connect. The TV reports what its input can display; the soundbar reports what its HDMI path can pass; and the source chooses a mode accepted by the chain. A mismatch can produce a black screen, a fallback to 60 Hz, stereo audio, or no audio at all.

For audio, the path matters as much as the source. A streaming box connected to the TV can send Atmos only if the TV accepts it and returns it over eARC/ARC. A box connected directly to the soundbar avoids that particular TV passthrough step, but the TV still must accept the resulting video signal. eARC therefore improves the odds for high-bandwidth audio, while direct soundbar inputs can simplify source-audio routing.

Troubleshooting common failures

No sound from the TV

  • Confirm the HDMI cable is in the TV’s eARC/ARC-labeled port, not a regular HDMI input.
  • Select the soundbar or receiver as the TV’s audio output.
  • Enable HDMI-CEC and eARC where the TV exposes those controls.
  • Power off the TV, soundbar, and source, then restart the TV first to force a fresh HDMI handshake.

Sound is stereo instead of Atmos or surround

  • Check whether the source title and subscription include Atmos.
  • Set the source to automatic or passthrough audio.
  • On the TV, disable forced PCM or stereo output and enable eARC.
  • Try connecting the source directly to the soundbar to determine whether the TV’s passthrough is the limiting step.

4K/120 does not appear

  • Verify that the console, cable, soundbar input, and TV input are all on the intended HDMI 2.1 path.
  • Check the TV’s input label or enhanced-format setting; some sets require enhanced mode to be enabled per port.
  • Temporarily turn off VRR or HDR to isolate a bandwidth or handshake issue.
  • Connect the console directly to the TV. If 4K/120 returns, compare that TV port’s capabilities with the soundbar route.

Wireless Dolby Atmos or Q-Symphony is unavailable

These are Samsung ecosystem features, not requirements for HDMI operation. Confirm the TV is a supported Samsung model in your region and falls within the published 2022–2026 range, while checking exclusions such as the Australian page’s 32-inch The Frame exception. On another TV brand, use HDMI eARC or ARC instead.

Regional model numbers and documentation

The HW-Q990H name is used across regional product listings with different suffixes. Samsung’s Canadian and Australian pages are the sources for the specifications cited here, and their eligibility notes are not interchangeable. Before buying cables or changing your wiring, open the Samsung page for your market and compare the exact soundbar suffix and TV model.

Samsung’s 2026 home-audio announcement provides broader lineup context, but connection decisions should be based on the detailed product specifications: Samsung Newsroom’s 2026 home-audio announcement.

Which connection should you use?

Your priority Recommended starting route Main condition to verify
Simple switching among several HDMI sources Connect sources to the TV and return audio over eARC The TV must pass the needed audio format
TV apps with the highest audio bandwidth Use the TV’s eARC port with passthrough enabled The TV must support the app’s output format
Console 4K at 120 Hz Use the TV’s HDMI 2.1 gaming input or the soundbar’s HDMI 2.1 pass-through Verify the complete chain, including VRR/ALLM behavior
Audio format missing through a TV input Try the source directly on the soundbar The TV must still accept the soundbar’s video output
Wireless Atmos or Q-Symphony Use an eligible Samsung TV and follow Samsung’s pairing instructions Exact model, year, region, and exclusions

Bottom line

The Samsung HW-Q990H is broadly compatible with modern TVs, consoles, and HDMI streaming devices. Use HDMI eARC between the bar and TV, and choose whether each source belongs on the TV or the soundbar based on the TV’s passthrough and gaming capabilities. Samsung states HDMI 2.1 pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz, but the exact result depends on the complete HDMI chain. Wireless Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony require eligible Samsung televisions; ordinary HDMI sound does not.
