No. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is a Zelda-themed hardware bundle. Nintendo’s published package contents list the console and accessories, but no Zelda game. If you want to play a Zelda title on it, plan to buy the game or an eligible upgrade separately.
What the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition actually is
The product is a special-design Nintendo Switch 2 console rather than a software bundle. Nintendo’s U.S. listing presents it as the “Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition,” while Nintendo UK describes an anniversary console with Triforce motifs across the console, dock and Joy-Con 2 controllers. The Zelda branding identifies the hardware design; it does not, by itself, promise a game in the box.
The distinction matters because special-edition consoles can be sold in two different ways: as themed hardware only, or as hardware packaged with a specific game. For this edition, Nintendo’s published contents support the first interpretation. There is no software item, download code or Zelda title named in the included-items list.
Everything Nintendo lists in the package
Nintendo’s U.S. product page lists the physical components below. The list is the best way to check what you are paying for, because it separates the anniversary design from any game purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
| Package item | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 console | The Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition console with the themed design |
| Joy-Con 2 controllers | Green-and-gold controllers matching the anniversary styling |
| Nintendo Switch 2 dock | A dock carrying the anniversary design elements |
| AC adapter | Power adapter listed as an included accessory |
| USB-C charging cable | Charging cable listed in the box contents |
| Joy-Con 2 grip | Grip accessory for the controllers |
| Joy-Con 2 straps | Controller-strap accessories |
| HDMI cable | Video cable listed for connecting the dock to a display |
| Zelda game | Not listed |
Because the game row is absent from Nintendo’s included-items list, you should treat the bundle as hardware-only for software purposes. The U.S. page does not name a digital entitlement, a game card or a redemption code. Nintendo UK’s announcement likewise describes the themed console, dock and controllers without naming a bundled title.
Why the Zelda name does not mean a game is included
“The Legend of Zelda” appears in the product name to identify the theme and anniversary styling. It is not the name of a game included with the console. Nintendo’s announcement focuses on visual details such as Triforce motifs, while the U.S. listing enumerates the hardware and cables. Neither source adds a Zelda game to the package.
This is a useful rule for reading any special-edition listing: look for a separate line such as a game title, “download code,” “game card,” or “digital version included.” If the contents section stops at the console and accessories, the software is normally a separate purchase. For this edition, Nintendo provides no such software line.

Release date and current availability
Scheduled availability
Nintendo announced October 29, 2026 as the availability date for the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition. Nintendo UK’s announcement is dated September 16, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, the authoritative product information still listed October 29 as a future date. Treat it as a scheduled availability date, not evidence that the edition had already launched.
Stock can change by country and retailer
Nintendo’s U.S. product page displayed “Currently unavailable” on October 13, 2026. That status is time-sensitive: a product can move from unavailable to orderable, or sell out again, without changing the package contents. Check the live Nintendo page or an authorized retailer in your country for current stock, delivery timing and the price shown for your region.

- Glossy white dock with Hylian illustrations
- Hardware with designs from the game
- 7-inch OLED screen. Enjoy vivid colors and crisp contrast with a screen that makes colors pop
- Freely angle the system’s wide, adjustable stand for comfortable viewing in Tabletop mode
- Use the dock’s LAN port when playing in TV mode for a wired internet connection (LAN cable sold separately)
The U.S. listing and UK announcement establish the bundle content across those markets, but they do not guarantee identical stock status, ordering windows or pricing everywhere. A retailer page should be read alongside Nintendo’s own contents list so that a listing does not accidentally imply that a game is part of the hardware package.
How to get a Zelda game for the console
If your goal is to play Zelda on the themed Switch 2, budget for the game separately. Nintendo lists Switch 2 versions of two relevant titles, with different purchase paths for new buyers and existing owners.

Nintendo has a separate official physical listing for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It is presented as a Switch 2 game, not as an item inside the 40th Anniversary hardware box. Nintendo says this edition adds performance improvements and Switch 2-exclusive features, including ZELDA NOTES.
For a buyer starting with the anniversary console, the practical sequence is straightforward: purchase the console bundle, then purchase the Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition separately if that is the Zelda game you want. The game’s standalone listing is here: Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition product page.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo also lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Existing owners of the Nintendo Switch version can purchase an upgrade pack. Nintendo says eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access some Switch 2 Edition content at no additional cost.

Eligibility is therefore different from simply owning the anniversary console. The relevant questions are whether you already own the Switch version and whether your Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is active and eligible for the stated content. Nintendo’s Zelda page contains the upgrade information: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and upgrade details.
Game purchase options at a glance
| What you want | What Nintendo lists | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| A new Zelda game for the themed console | Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, sold separately as a physical product | Confirm that the listing is the Switch 2 Edition and that it is a separate transaction from the console |
| Switch 2 features for an existing Breath of the Wild owner | An upgrade pack is available for owners of the Switch version | Confirm that you own the qualifying Switch game and review Nintendo’s current upgrade terms |
| Some Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition content through membership | Eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members may receive some content at no additional cost | Check current eligibility and which content is covered; membership status matters |
| A Zelda title included with the 40th Anniversary console | None named in the published console contents | Do not rely on the Zelda branding; verify a separate software line or code |
A reliable buying checklist
- Open the official product description. Start with Nintendo’s U.S. listing for the anniversary hardware: Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition.
- Read the included-items section. Confirm that the console, green-and-gold Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, AC adapter, USB-C cable, grip, straps and HDMI cable are listed. Look specifically for a game card, digital code or software entitlement; Nintendo’s published list has none.
- Separate hardware and software in your budget. The anniversary design covers the console and accessories. Add the price of any Zelda game or upgrade only after checking its own product page; the console listing does not establish a bundled game price or a combined offer.
- Check the date and stock for your region. October 29, 2026 is the announced availability date. The U.S. page showed “Currently unavailable” on October 13, 2026, but a later status may differ.
- Choose the appropriate game path. A new buyer can consider the separately listed Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. An existing Breath of the Wild owner should review the upgrade-pack and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack conditions instead of assuming a full new purchase is required.
- Recheck the final retailer cart. Make sure the cart contains both the themed hardware and any Zelda software you intend to buy. A console order by itself should not be interpreted as a game order.
How to compare this edition with another Switch 2 bundle
If you are deciding between the anniversary hardware and another Switch 2 package, compare like with like. A fair comparison has four separate fields:
- Included software: Write down the exact game title, edition and delivery method. If a listing does not name software, record it as no game listed rather than inferring one from the artwork.
- Hardware design: Note whether the difference is a themed console, dock, controllers or another accessory. The Zelda edition’s distinctive value is its green-and-gold Joy-Con 2 controllers and Triforce-inspired design elements.
- Availability date: Distinguish a scheduled date from a product that is already shipping. This edition’s announced date is October 29, 2026.
- Live price and stock: Check the current regional listing at the time you order. Nintendo’s U.S. page showed temporary unavailability on October 13, 2026, and Nintendo’s published information does not establish a fixed price.
This framework prevents a common error: treating the visual theme as if it were a software entitlement. It also makes another bundle’s included game visible in the comparison instead of allowing the Zelda name to dominate the decision.

“The Zelda logo means the game is preinstalled.”
The published contents do not say that. The listing names hardware and accessories, not preinstalled software or a download code.
“The anniversary edition must include the newest Zelda title.”
No specific Zelda game is attached to the anniversary console listing. Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has its own Nintendo product page and must be treated as a separate purchase.

- Support your journey with ZELDA NOTES on the Nintendo Switch app
“Owning the themed console automatically grants the Breath of the Wild upgrade.”
The upgrade information is tied to ownership of the Switch version and, for some content, eligibility as an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member. The console’s special design does not replace those conditions.
“Unavailable means discontinued.”
“Currently unavailable” was the status shown on the U.S. page on October 13, 2026, not a permanent discontinuation statement. Revisit the live listing for a current stock decision.
What to expect when ordering
Expect the anniversary package to arrive as a themed console-and-accessories purchase. The hardware list tells you what should be represented in the box: the console, matching Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, power and charging accessories, grip, straps and HDMI cable. A Zelda game should appear as a separate line item on your order if you choose to buy one.
Keep the console order and game order conceptually separate even when a retailer lets you place them in one cart. That makes it easier to verify whether you selected the Switch 2 edition of a title, an upgrade pack for an existing game, or no software at all. It also avoids assuming that a promotional image or product name changes Nintendo’s stated package contents.

Bottom line for buyers
The Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is a Zelda-themed hardware package, not a Zelda game bundle. Nintendo announced availability for October 29, 2026, and the U.S. listing showed “Currently unavailable” on October 13, 2026. Buy a Zelda title or an eligible upgrade separately, and verify the exact edition, membership conditions and regional stock before checkout.
