Yes. Microsoft’s current Xbox Wireless Controller works with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, Android phones and tablets, and iPhone and iPad devices. Xbox consoles use Xbox Wireless for the connection; PCs and mobile devices normally connect over Bluetooth. A USB-C cable can provide a wired connection when you have the controller bundle that includes the cable.
The important qualification is that Microsoft supports selected devices and operating-system versions, not every phone or every future OS release. Wireless range, battery life and wired behavior also depend on your hardware and how you use the controller.
Compatibility at a glance
The controller is designed to move between Microsoft consoles, computers and mobile devices. Microsoft’s product description says it can “quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, Windows PC, Android, and iOS.” The connection method changes by platform.
| Device | Connection documented by Microsoft | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Xbox Wireless | Pair the controller directly with the console. Bluetooth is not the console connection described for this controller. |
| Xbox Series S | Xbox Wireless | The same console-pairing process and compatibility apply as on Series X. |
| Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC | Bluetooth, or USB-C wired connection with the cable bundle | Your PC must have compatible Bluetooth hardware and an operating system that supports the controller. Wired play uses the USB-C port. |
| Android phone or tablet | Bluetooth, or USB-C wired connection with the cable bundle | Microsoft qualifies support by selected device and operating-system version, so check your phone’s Bluetooth and game-support behavior. |
| iPhone or iPad | Bluetooth, or USB-C wired connection with the cable bundle | Compatibility depends on the particular Apple device and its operating-system version, as well as whether the game accepts a controller. |
“Compatible” means the device can establish a supported controller connection. It does not mean every game, app or cloud-gaming service will expose every button or feature.

How it connects to Xbox Series X|S
Use Xbox Wireless, not Bluetooth
Series X and Series S consoles use Xbox Wireless to connect this controller. Bluetooth pairing menus on a phone or PC are therefore not part of the console setup. The controller’s wireless radio and the console’s pairing controls establish the console link.
Pair the controller with the console
- Turn on the Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to power it on.
- Press the console’s pair button, then press and hold the controller’s pair button until the Xbox light begins flashing.
- Wait for the light to remain steady. That indicates the controller has completed the wireless pairing.
- Open a game and test both sticks, triggers and the menu buttons before putting the console into a different room.
If the light keeps flashing, move the controller closer to the console, replace or recharge the batteries, and repeat the pairing sequence. A controller paired to a phone or PC may need to be switched back to the console using its pairing control before it will respond to the Xbox.
Using the controller on a Windows 10 or 11 PC
Bluetooth wireless connection
Bluetooth is Microsoft’s documented wireless method for Windows PCs. The computer needs a compatible Bluetooth adapter, either built in or added through a supported adapter. Desktop PCs without Bluetooth cannot create a Bluetooth connection until that hardware is installed.

- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices; in Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select Add device or Add Bluetooth or other device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s pair button until the Xbox logo flashes rapidly.
- Select the Xbox controller when it appears in Windows’ device list.
- Wait for Windows to show it as connected, then launch the game and choose the controller in the game’s input settings if required.
Windows menu wording can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 updates. If the controller appears but will not connect, remove its old entry from Bluetooth settings, restart Bluetooth, and pair it again. A PC that already has the controller linked to another Bluetooth host may require you to switch the controller away from that host first.
USB-C wired play
The controller can also work over USB-C when connected with a suitable data cable. Microsoft documents this wired option for the bundle that includes the USB-C cable. Plug the cable into the controller and a USB port on the PC; Windows should detect it as a game controller without Bluetooth pairing.
Wired operation is useful when a desktop lacks Bluetooth, when wireless interference is troublesome, or when you want the controller powered through the cable instead of relying on AA batteries. A cable that provides charging only and does not carry data may not create a controller connection, so use a data-capable USB-C cable.

Using it with Android phones and tablets
Bluetooth pairing
- Open the Android device’s Settings and go to Connected devices, Connections or the equivalent Bluetooth menu used by that device.
- Turn Bluetooth on and choose the command to pair a new device.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller, then hold the pair button until the logo flashes.
- Tap the Xbox controller in the list of available devices.
- After Android reports a connection, open a controller-compatible game and check its input settings.
Android hardware and software vary widely. Microsoft describes support for selected Android devices and operating-system versions, so a phone that can see Bluetooth accessories may still have limited game compatibility or unusual button mapping. If a game does not respond, look for an in-game controller setting, update the game and check the phone maker’s software support before assuming the controller is defective.

With the USB-C cable included in the applicable controller bundle, you can try a wired connection to an Android device that supports USB host accessories. The phone must recognize game controllers over its USB-C port, and some phones require an adapter or a different cable arrangement. Wired support is therefore a device-specific option, not a guarantee for every Android model.
Using it with an iPhone or iPad
Bluetooth pairing steps
- Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad and turn Bluetooth on.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Choose the Xbox controller from the list of nearby devices.
- Confirm that it shows as connected, then start a game or app that supports external controllers.
Microsoft lists iOS devices among the supported platforms but qualifies compatibility by selected device and operating-system version. Apple’s game and accessory support can also differ by app. A controller may pair successfully yet be ignored by an app that only accepts touch input or a different controller standard.

Wired use with Apple devices
The USB-C cable option is documented for the controller bundle, but a wired connection depends on the Apple device’s port, operating-system support and any required adapter. Newer USB-C iPads may accept a direct cable more readily than an iPhone or iPad that needs a Lightning-to-USB adapter. Bluetooth is usually the simpler method for iOS and iPadOS.
Switching between a console, PC and phone
The controller is intended to be used with more than one host. After you pair it with a console and a Bluetooth device, use the controller’s pairing control to move between the saved connection types rather than creating a new pairing every time. Keep the unused host’s Bluetooth turned off or disconnect the controller from that host if it repeatedly reconnects to the wrong device.

Only one active game session can receive the controller’s input at a time. If a phone, PC and console are all awake nearby, the controller may connect to the host that responds first. Turning off Bluetooth on the mobile device or quitting the PC game before returning to the Xbox makes the switch more predictable.

Battery life and the USB-C choice
Microsoft lists up to 40 hours of AA-battery life for the controller. “Up to” is a maximum specification, not a guaranteed runtime for every session. Microsoft says actual battery life varies significantly with headsets, accessories and usage, so a headset plugged into the controller, vibration intensity and play habits can reduce the time between battery changes.
A USB-C cable can provide wired play and avoids relying on the AA cells while the cable is attached. The USB-C bundle’s listed release date is November 10, 2020. Check the exact package contents before buying: not every retail listing necessarily includes the cable, and stock, price and SKU details can change.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The console does not find the controller
- Replace the AA batteries or connect the controller by USB-C if you have the cable bundle.
- Press the console’s pair button and then hold the controller’s pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Move within a few feet of the console and remove nearby wireless interference.
- Power-cycle the console and repeat pairing.
- If the controller was recently used with a phone or PC, switch it back to the Xbox connection before pairing again.
Windows sees the controller but games do not
- Confirm that Windows lists the controller as connected, not merely remembered.
- Check the game’s input menu and select a gamepad or Xbox-controller profile.
- Close other programs that may have captured controller input, then restart the game.
- Try a USB-C data cable to separate a Bluetooth problem from a game-configuration problem.
The phone pairs but a game ignores it
- Verify that the game supports physical controllers; pairing alone cannot add controller support to a touch-only game.
- Update the phone’s operating system and the game, subject to the manufacturer’s supported versions.
- Disconnect the controller from other hosts and pair it again.
- Test a second controller-compatible app to determine whether the issue is app-specific.
The connection drops or the response feels delayed
- Install fresh AA batteries or use a wired USB-C connection.
- Keep the controller and host close together and avoid placing them behind a metal surface.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories that may compete for bandwidth.
- On a PC or phone, remove and recreate the pairing entry.
What you should verify before buying
For Series X|S play, confirm that the listing is an Xbox Wireless Controller compatible with those consoles. For PC or phone use, check the device’s Bluetooth capability and the operating-system version rather than relying only on the product name. If wired play matters, verify that the package explicitly includes the USB-C cable and that your host supports controller data over USB.
Also check the game or service you plan to use. The controller may be fully compatible with the operating system while an individual game lacks controller support, maps buttons differently or limits advanced features. Those are software limitations, not evidence that the controller cannot connect.
Bottom line
The current Xbox Wireless Controller works with Xbox Series X and Series S through Xbox Wireless, with Windows 10/11 PCs through Bluetooth or a USB-C cable, and with supported Android and iOS phones and tablets through Bluetooth. Wired USB-C use is available with the cable bundle. The main caveat is selection: Microsoft’s support depends on the device and operating-system version, and the advertised 40-hour AA runtime varies with accessories and usage.
