Yes, the wired HyperX Cloud III can be used with a phone, but the practical connection depends on your phone’s ports and USB-audio support. HyperX lists mobile devices as compatible and specifies two wired connection methods: a 3.5 mm, four-pole CTIA headset connection and USB audio. A phone with a compatible headset jack can use the 3.5 mm route directly. A phone without that jack may require a separate, phone-compatible USB-C audio adapter, and HyperX does not establish that every phone supports all Cloud III functions over USB.
The box contains the gaming headset, detachable microphone, USB dongle, USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, and quick start guide. The included adapter is identified as USB-C to USB-A; it should not automatically be treated as a USB-C phone audio adapter.
Can I use the HyperX Cloud III with my phone?
HyperX lists the Cloud III as compatible with mobile devices. That is a compatibility category, not a guarantee that every phone model, operating system, port, or USB implementation will provide identical results. The Cloud III is a wired headset; the cited product information does not describe it as wireless or Bluetooth.

For phone use, there are two connection paths:
| Connection | What the headset uses | What your phone must provide | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog | Four-pole CTIA headset plug | A compatible 3.5 mm headset jack with microphone support | HyperX specifies the connector and lists mobile compatibility; phone-by-phone behavior is not guaranteed. |
| USB audio | USB connection through the supplied USB hardware | A compatible USB port, host-mode support, and headset microphone support | HyperX lists USB audio and mobile devices, but does not identify every supported phone, operating system, or USB function. |
The safest conclusion is therefore conditional: the Cloud III is intended to work with phones, while the exact method depends on the phone. A 3.5 mm headset jack is the straightforward documented option. USB can work when the phone recognizes the headset as an audio device and supplies the required support.

What connection should you use?
3.5 mm: the simplest route when your phone has a headset jack
The Cloud III’s analog specification is a 3.5 mm, four-pole CTIA connection. Four-pole CTIA wiring is the common headset arrangement that carries left and right audio, microphone input, and ground through one plug. If your phone has a compatible headset jack, insert the Cloud III’s 3.5 mm plug fully and select the headset as the phone’s active audio device if the phone presents a choice.
This route does not require the USB dongle. It also avoids questions about the phone’s USB audio implementation. However, the phone still needs to support a headset microphone through its jack. A jack that accepts headphones but lacks microphone contacts may provide sound without allowing calls or voice chat through the Cloud III microphone.

USB: possible on some phones, but not universal
HyperX also specifies wired USB audio. On a phone with a USB-C port, you may be able to connect compatible USB hardware and have the phone route playback and microphone input through the headset. Whether that works depends on the phone’s USB host behavior, audio-driver support, power handling, and the app being used.

Why the included USB-C-to-USB-A adapter can be misunderstood
The package list identifies an adapter described as USB-C to USB-A. That wording indicates the adapter’s connector direction; it does not establish that it converts the Cloud III’s headset plug into a phone’s audio port. It may be useful for connecting the supplied USB hardware to a computer or another host with the corresponding port, but the product listing does not say that it is a universal USB-C phone audio adapter.
If your phone has no 3.5 mm jack, check the phone maker’s specifications for USB audio and microphone support. You may need a separate adapter designed for that phone’s port and audio standard. Choose one that explicitly supports headset microphone input, not merely headphone output.

| Gaming headset | Provides the earcups, cable connection, speakers, and controls. | The headset is wired, not presented as a Bluetooth or wireless model in the cited specifications. |
| Detachable microphone | Provides voice input for calls, chat, and games when the connected device supports microphone input. | It can be removed when you do not need a boom microphone. |
| USB dongle | Provides the headset’s USB audio connection path. | Its usefulness with a phone depends on the phone’s USB host and audio support. |
| USB-C-to-USB-A adapter | Adapts between the listed USB-C and USB-A connector types. | The listing does not identify it as a phone-specific audio adapter. |
| Quick start guide | Provides the initial setup information supplied with the product. | Keep it with the headset if you need the package-specific setup instructions. |
Package contents can vary by region or product listing. If an exact item or warranty term matters, check the HyperX product page for the region where you are buying. One regional listing notes a two-year warranty, but that term should not be assumed for every market.
How to connect the Cloud III to a phone
Using a 3.5 mm headset jack
- Locate the phone’s 3.5 mm port. It must be a headset jack, not a connector intended only for stereo headphones.
- Insert the Cloud III’s 3.5 mm four-pole CTIA plug completely. A partially inserted plug can cause one channel, the microphone, or both to fail.
- Open a music or video app and raise the phone’s media volume. Confirm that sound comes from the headset rather than the phone speaker.
- Make a test recording or place a test call in an app that allows microphone access. Speak toward the detachable microphone and verify that the phone receives your voice.
- If the phone asks which audio device to use, select the wired headset. In a call or chat app, also check that its input and output devices are set to the connected headset.
Using USB audio
- Read the phone’s specifications or support documentation to confirm USB audio-host support and microphone input. Do not rely on the presence of a USB-C socket alone.
- Connect the Cloud III’s USB hardware using the connector arrangement supported by your phone. The supplied USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is not documented as a universal phone adapter, so a separate phone-specific adapter may be required.
- Unlock the phone and approve any USB accessory or audio-device prompt that appears.
- Play audio and check whether the phone switches output from its speaker to the Cloud III. If the phone remains on its speaker, USB audio may be disabled, unsupported, or connected through an incompatible adapter.
- Test the microphone in a recorder or voice-chat app. Grant that app microphone permission and verify that the Cloud III, rather than the phone’s internal microphone, is selected.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset after changing USB settings. Some phones detect USB audio only when the accessory is attached after the device is unlocked.
What may not work, and why
The phone has no 3.5 mm jack
Many phones omit a dedicated headset jack. In that case, the Cloud III cannot use its analog plug without an adapter. The adapter must match the phone’s port and preserve microphone input; a passive cable intended only for charging or stereo output may not do so.

Audio works but the microphone does not
- The phone’s jack may support headphones but not a four-pole headset microphone.
- A USB adapter may provide output only and omit an input circuit.
- The app may lack microphone permission or may be using the phone’s internal microphone.
- The 3.5 mm plug may not be fully inserted, or the adapter may not maintain CTIA wiring.
Test with a basic recorder, then inspect the app’s microphone permission and input selector. If playback works but every app records from the phone, the limitation is likely the phone, adapter, or app rather than the headset’s speaker path.
The phone does not detect the USB connection
- Confirm that the phone supports USB host mode and USB audio.
- Try the connection with the phone unlocked, then reconnect it.
- Check that the adapter’s connector direction matches the hardware you are attaching.
- Remove other USB accessories that could be drawing power or confusing device detection.
- Test the 3.5 mm route, if available, to separate a phone USB limitation from a headset fault.
The available product information does not establish a universal list of compatible phones, operating systems, or USB-C adapters, so a failed USB connection on one model should not be generalized to every phone.
What the Cloud III does not promise for every phone
HyperX’s mobile-compatibility statement confirms the intended device category, while the connection specifications identify 3.5 mm CTIA and USB audio. They do not establish all of the following for every handset:
- That a particular phone model has a compatible headset jack.
- That every USB-C port accepts USB audio accessories.
- That USB microphone input works in every operating-system version or app.
- That the supplied USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is the correct adapter for a specific phone.
- That all controls or headset functions behave identically across phones.
For a purchase or setup decision, identify your phone model, available port, and whether you need two-way voice communication. If you only need listening, more adapters may appear to work; if you need calls or game chat, confirm microphone support through the exact connection you plan to use.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Phone has a compatible 3.5 mm headset jack: use the Cloud III’s four-pole CTIA connection and test both playback and microphone input.
- Phone has USB-C but no headset jack: verify USB audio and microphone support, then use a compatible phone-specific adapter or USB path.
- You own only the supplied USB-C-to-USB-A adapter: do not assume it converts the Cloud III to a phone’s audio port; its listed direction is USB-C to USB-A.
- You need reliable voice chat: test the microphone in the actual call or game app and grant microphone permission.
- The package differs from the list: compare it with the regional HyperX product page, because packaging and warranty details can vary by market.
