Yes for original Game Boy Advance cartridges, based on a working prototype demonstration; accessories remain unconfirmed. Footage of the FPGA SP (also called FPGBA SP) shows a physical GBA game running, and project creator Taki Udon has been reported saying that real cartridges work. No device-specific evidence yet confirms that Nintendo GBA link cables, wireless adapters, or other original accessories work with the prototype.

That distinction matters because this is an unfinished passion project, not a shipping product with a published compatibility list. Treat cartridge support as demonstrated prototype functionality, not a guarantee that every commercial, flash, reproduction, or unusual-hardware cartridge will work. Treat accessory support as unknown until RetroRemake publishes electrical, software, and multiplayer compatibility details.

Which FPGA Game Boy Advance SP is this?

The name refers to the clamshell FPGA SP/FPGBA SP prototype associated with RetroRemake founder Taki Udon. It is not Nintendo’s original Game Boy Advance SP, an Analogue Pocket, or a conventional emulator handheld styled like an SP.

A report dated October 12, 2026 showed the prototype running a Pokémon GBA title from a cartridge. The same report described USB-C output and the ability to run games from an SD card. Udon characterized the device as a passion project and said he was still trying to make it work for around $100. That figure is a development target, not a confirmed retail price.

What cartridge support has actually been demonstrated?

A real GBA cartridge ran on the prototype

The strongest evidence is direct: video of the prototype running a GBA game from a physical Game Pak, combined with the creator’s statement that it plays real cartridges natively. For the practical question “Can it play my real GBA games?”, the responsible answer is therefore a qualified yes.

“Qualified” is important. One demonstration proves that the cartridge interface and the FPGA implementation can operate together for at least that game and cartridge configuration. It does not establish that every retail cartridge, regional revision, flash cartridge, reproduction, or cartridge containing additional hardware has been tested.

What the demonstration does not prove

  • It does not provide a compatibility percentage or a tested sample size.
  • It does not confirm behavior across every GBA game revision or board revision.
  • It does not confirm support for flash cartridges, reproduction cartridges, or cartridges with special save or enhancement hardware.
  • It does not establish long-session reliability, save-data integrity, or behavior after future firmware updates.
  • It does not show that accessories connected through the original GBA accessory interface will work.

No independent compatibility matrix or published test methodology is available. If a specific cartridge is important to you, wait for a maker-maintained list or a test report that identifies the cartridge type, game revision, save technology, and firmware version.

Why cartridge support does not automatically include accessories

A cartridge slot and an accessory connection are separate engineering problems. A handheld can read the GBA address and data buses while omitting, changing, or emulating the external communication hardware used by Nintendo accessories.

  1. Physical connection: the device needs the correct connector, pinout, voltage levels, and mechanical clearance. A USB-C port or an SD slot is not a substitute for a GBA link port.
  2. Electrical behavior: link cables and wireless adapters rely on signal timing and electrical characteristics that must be reproduced or routed correctly.
  3. Protocol implementation: the FPGA design and firmware must handle the multiplayer protocol, game-specific timing, and any accessory negotiation.
  4. Software support: the operating environment must expose those functions to the game instead of only booting a cartridge locally.
  5. Physical accessory testing: the maker must test the actual cables, adapters, player counts, and game combinations. Cartridge playback alone cannot substitute for this step.

Link cables: what is known and what is not

Nintendo’s accessory documentation says the original Game Boy Advance Link Cable works with the original Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP, provided the GBA Game Paks support multiplayer. Nintendo also notes that the number of players, cables, and game copies depends on the individual game.

That documentation describes original Nintendo hardware. It does not confirm that the FPGA SP has a compatible link-cable port, reproduces the required signaling, or supports multiplayer in firmware. The available prototype reporting supplies no device-specific link-cable test.

Accordingly, do not buy a link cable on the assumption that it will work with the FPGA SP. A maker confirmation should identify the physical port, supported cable type, maximum players, required number of game copies, and any firmware version needed.

Wireless adapters: a separate unresolved question

Nintendo’s Wireless Adapter plugs into an original GBA or GBA SP and enables multiplayer only in games that support the adapter. That is another original-hardware capability, not a general statement about every handheld that can run GBA software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No available report confirms that the FPGA SP includes the required connector, supplies the correct power, implements the wireless-adapter protocol, or recognizes compatible games. The prototype’s USB-C output and SD-card support do not constitute evidence of wireless-adapter support.

Other accessories and special cartridges

The same caution applies to peripherals beyond the two most common multiplayer options. The available information does not establish support for specialty accessories, unusual cartridge hardware, or any adapter that depends on the original GBA’s electrical behavior.

Firmware can matter even when a cartridge fits and boots. Documentation for another FPGA handheld has described fixes involving particular GBA game revisions and save-data backup on cartridges with special hardware. That example demonstrates why compatibility depends on implementation and firmware, but it is not evidence that the FPGA SP has the same fixes or limitations.

Price Target around $100 An aspirational statement by Taki Udon, not a confirmed price.

How it compares with original GBA SP expectations

Owners often assume that an FPGA replacement should reproduce every function of Nintendo’s handheld. That assumption is unsafe until each function is documented.

What to check before treating it as your cartridge replacement

Ask for a compatibility list

Look for a list that names tested games, cartridge board types, save technologies, regional revisions, and firmware versions. A simple statement that “real cartridges work” is useful evidence, but it is not a universal guarantee.

Confirm the physical ports

Before buying any cable or adapter, verify that the final hardware actually includes a GBA-compatible accessory connector. USB-C video output, charging, or data transfer does not imply a link port.

Check multiplayer scope

Ask whether multiplayer works with one cartridge or requires one copy per player, how many players are supported, whether multiple cables can be chained, and which games have been tested. These details vary by game even on original hardware.

Separate availability from announcements

Do not treat a prototype video or an approximate price as a pre-order opportunity. Wait for a confirmed release date, final specifications, warranty terms, and a return policy before relying on the device for a collection or multiplayer setup.

What owners of original cartridges should expect

If the FPGA SP reaches production with the demonstrated cartridge design intact, owners should expect the most confidence with ordinary, unmodified GBA Game Paks similar to the one shown. They should remain cautious with cartridges that contain unusual save systems, enhancement chips, nonstandard boards, or aftermarket hardware until those categories appear in official testing.

Keep original cartridges clean and physically undamaged, and retain the original GBA SP or another known-compatible system if a particular game has irreplaceable saves. That is a risk-management choice, not evidence of a defect in the prototype.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for cartridge and accessory buyers

The FPGA SP has crossed the most important cartridge threshold: a real GBA cartridge has been shown running, and its creator says native cartridge play works. The evidence stops there. It does not establish universal cartridge coverage, and it does not establish support for the original Link Cable, Nintendo Wireless Adapter, or other GBA accessories.

Until RetroRemake publishes final hardware details and accessory tests, treat the device as a promising prototype with demonstrated cartridge capability—not as a confirmed drop-in replacement for every function of a Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP.
