No—DJI Neo can take off, film, and land using palm control, and it can be operated from the DJI Fly app without a conventional remote. A compatible remote becomes necessary only when you want traditional stick flying, motion-control input, or FPV-style operation with goggles. The right choice depends on how you plan to frame and control the drone, not on a requirement that every Neo owner buy a controller.
What “needs a remote controller” means for DJI Neo
DJI Neo has several separate control paths. Palm control is designed for quick, close-range filming around a person. DJI Fly provides a phone-based interface for live view, settings, shooting modes, footage transfer, and limited manual positioning. A standard controller supplies the conventional two-stick experience. Motion and FPV options add goggles and specialized controllers for an immersive flight setup.
That distinction matters because “remote controller” can mean either a basic requirement to use Neo at all or a preferred way to fly it. It is not a basic requirement. DJI’s official FAQ says Neo can take off from and land on your palm and perform intelligent filming without a remote controller or another auxiliary device. The same FAQ qualifies subject confirmation for this function as currently supporting people.
DJI Neo control options at a glance
| Control method | Additional equipment | What it is for | Important limits or qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palm control | No remote or phone required for the control action | Selecting supported intelligent-shooting modes, palm takeoff, subject-locked filming, and palm landing | Best suited to straightforward, close-range personal filming; maintain visual line of sight and follow DJI’s safety instructions |
| DJI Fly app | Smartphone and Wi-Fi connection to Neo | Live view, shooting parameters, supported modes, footage transfer, and virtual-joystick positioning | DJI states a maximum app-control height of 30 m and distance of 50 m; virtual joysticks are not equivalent to traditional sticks |
| Standard remote | Compatible DJI RC-N3, RC-N2, or RC 2, depending on the exact kit and market | Conventional stick control for pilots who want a dedicated controller | Confirm compatibility and whether the controller is included before buying separately |
| Motion control with goggles | DJI RC Motion 3 plus DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 | Immersive flight controlled through motion input | Requires the corresponding controller-and-goggles combination; unnecessary for basic Neo use |
| FPV remote with goggles | DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 plus compatible goggles | Another immersive control route using an FPV-oriented remote | Separate equipment and compatibility requirements apply |
How palm control works without a controller
Palm control is the simplest path when the goal is to record yourself rather than manually pilot every movement. Use the mode button on top of Neo to select a supported intelligent-shooting mode. After initiating palm takeoff, Neo uses visual algorithms to recognize and lock onto a human subject, records the selected shot, and can land on a palm.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is not the same as having unrestricted manual flight with no controller. Palm control is built around predefined intelligent filming behavior and a nearby person. It is most appropriate when you want a quick clip and do not need the precision of two physical sticks.
A practical palm-control sequence
- Choose an open area where you can keep Neo in sight and where people, branches, walls, and other obstacles will not interfere with takeoff or landing.
- Use the top mode button to select the intelligent-shooting mode you want to use.
- Initiate palm takeoff according to DJI’s instructions, keeping your hand positioned as directed and giving the aircraft room to rise.
- Remain the recognized human subject while Neo performs the selected intelligent shot. Do not assume that subject tracking removes your responsibility to monitor the aircraft.
- When the shot is complete, use the instructed palm-landing action and keep your hand steady until Neo has settled.
Keep visual line of sight throughout the flight. DJI’s description of palm control is a product capability statement, not an independent safety test, so treat the mode as a convenience feature rather than permission to fly without supervision.
Using DJI Fly as a phone-based controller
DJI Fly connects to Neo over Wi-Fi and gives you a live view of the camera. From the app, you can adjust available shooting parameters, change supported shooting modes, transfer footage, and make small manual position changes with virtual joysticks.

What you can do in the app
- Frame the shot: live view lets you see what Neo’s camera sees while you set up a recording.
- Change camera and mode settings: the app exposes the shooting controls and supported intelligent modes available to your connected aircraft.
- Move the aircraft slightly: virtual joysticks can fine-tune position during shooting or control Neo to return, according to DJI’s FAQ.
- Move footage to your phone: the Wi-Fi connection supports transferring recorded material without adding a conventional remote to the setup.
App-control limits
DJI states a maximum app-control height of 30 m and a maximum distance of 50 m. These are DJI’s stated limits for app control, not a guarantee that a connection will be reliable at every location. Wi-Fi conditions, obstructions, interference, your phone, and local operating requirements can affect the practical result.
The app’s virtual joysticks are intended for fine positioning and return control. DJI explicitly says they cannot provide the same control experience as a traditional remote controller. If you expect the response, leverage, and familiarity of physical sticks, use a compatible standard remote instead of treating the phone interface as an equivalent substitute.
Basic app-control setup
- Install and open DJI Fly on a compatible smartphone.
- Power on Neo and connect the phone to the aircraft through the Wi-Fi connection used by DJI Fly.
- Open the aircraft view in DJI Fly and confirm that the live preview is available before starting a recording.
- Select the supported shooting mode and adjust the available parameters in the app.
- Use the on-screen controls only within DJI’s stated 30 m height and 50 m distance limits, keeping Neo in visual line of sight.
- Transfer footage through DJI Fly after landing, or use the app’s available return control when you need Neo to come back.
Menu names and pairing behavior can change with app and firmware updates. If the connection does not appear, verify that the phone, app version, Neo firmware, and exact aircraft package are compatible using DJI’s current support information rather than assuming every phone and bundle behaves identically.

When a standard remote controller makes sense
A standard remote is the choice for pilots who want conventional stick control instead of palm automation or a phone screen. DJI lists the DJI RC-N3, DJI RC-N2, and DJI RC 2 as compatible standard-controller options. This route is useful when you need deliberate, continuous input rather than the limited fine-tuning offered by virtual joysticks.

The exact controller supplied with a Neo package varies by bundle and market. Some kits may be sold without a standard controller because palm and app control are supported. Before purchasing a separate unit, read the contents of the exact package and confirm current compatibility for your region. A controller that is listed for Neo in one configuration should not be assumed to be included in every retail box.
Choose the standard-controller route if you value
- Physical sticks for continuous directional and altitude inputs.
- A control method that does not depend on manipulating virtual controls on a phone screen.
- Traditional piloting rather than predefined intelligent-shot behavior.
- A setup you can select from the compatible RC-N3, RC-N2, or RC 2 options after checking the current bundle and firmware information.
Buying a standard remote does not make palm control or DJI Fly unavailable; it simply adds another control path. Conversely, owning Neo without one does not prevent you from using its controller-free features.

Motion control: an immersive option, not a requirement
DJI lists DJI RC Motion 3 with either DJI Goggles 3 or DJI Goggles N3 as a supported control route. This setup is intended for an immersive experience in which your motion input controls the aircraft while you view the flight through goggles.
Because the motion controller and goggles are part of the control system, this is not a way to use Neo with “no accessories.” It is an optional expansion that requires the corresponding equipment. It makes sense only if immersive control is your priority; it adds cost, setup, and compatibility checks that are unnecessary for palm filming or ordinary app use.

Do not treat the FPV option as an alternative name for the standard RC-N3, RC-N2, or RC 2 path. It has its own equipment requirements and is relevant to readers deliberately building an FPV-style setup. Check the current compatibility list for the exact goggles and Neo configuration before buying components individually.
Which control method should you choose?
| Your main goal | Most suitable route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start filming yourself quickly with minimal equipment | Palm control | Neo can select supported intelligent modes, take off from your palm, film a recognized person, and land on a palm without a remote or auxiliary device |
| See a live preview, change settings, transfer clips, and make limited positioning adjustments | DJI Fly | The phone app combines camera controls and virtual joysticks over Wi-Fi, within DJI’s 30 m height and 50 m distance limits |
| Fly with familiar physical sticks | Compatible standard remote | RC-N3, RC-N2, and RC 2 are DJI-listed options; verify the exact package and market compatibility |
| Use head-mounted viewing and motion input | RC Motion 3 with Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 | Provides the listed motion-control-and-goggles experience, but requires both categories of equipment |
| Build an FPV-oriented setup | FPV Remote Controller 3 with compatible goggles | Uses DJI’s separate FPV control route and its own compatibility requirements |
What to check before buying a controller
- Bundle contents: identify whether your exact Neo package already includes a controller, goggles, or neither.
- Compatibility: check DJI’s current compatibility information for the aircraft, controller, goggles, app, and firmware versions you intend to use.
- Control style: decide whether you want automated subject filming, phone-based framing, physical sticks, motion input, or FPV input.
- Operating limits: if you plan to use DJI Fly, account for the stated 30 m height and 50 m distance maximums and keep the aircraft in sight.
- Setup complexity: palm control has the fewest components; app control adds a phone and Wi-Fi connection; motion and FPV routes add both specialized controllers and goggles.
- Availability by market: controller bundles and compatibility can change, so confirm the current listing for your country before ordering an additional unit.
Common misunderstandings
“No remote required” does not mean “no supervision required”
Controller-free operation still calls for visual line of sight and compliance with DJI’s safety instructions and applicable flight rules. Palm automation does not remove the need to monitor the aircraft.
Phone control is not equivalent to a standard remote
DJI describes the virtual joysticks as a way to fine-tune position during shooting or command a return. It expressly says they do not deliver the same control experience as a traditional controller, so choose the standard-remote path if precise stick input is central to your use.
Goggles do not replace every other requirement
Motion and FPV control are complete equipment combinations, not single-device upgrades. The listed motion setup needs RC Motion 3 and Goggles 3 or Goggles N3; the FPV route needs FPV Remote Controller 3 and compatible goggles.
Bottom line for a first-time Neo owner
Start with palm control if your priority is quick personal filming and the least equipment. Add DJI Fly when you need a live phone view, settings, footage transfer, or limited positioning control. Buy a compatible standard remote only when traditional sticks are important to you. Choose the motion or FPV path only if you specifically want immersive goggles-based flying and are prepared to obtain the required controller-and-goggles combination. Check the exact bundle, current compatibility information, and firmware requirements before spending money on an extra device.
