Short answer: The Canon PIXMA G3270 cannot print both sides automatically. Its printer is simplex, so duplex pages require a manual turn-and-reload process. It can create a multi-page PDF, but its flatbed scanner has no automatic document feeder (ADF); you must place each page on the glass yourself.

What the PIXMA G3270 can and cannot do

The G3270 has separate limits for printing and scanning. Canon describes printing as “Single Sided (Simplex) Printing” and scanning as “Single Sided (Simplex) Scanning.” In practical terms, the machine does not have a duplex print path that turns paper over internally, and it does not have a feeder that pulls a stack of originals through the scanner.

Function G3270 capability What you do in practice
Printing Single-sided (simplex) Print one side, turn and reload the sheets, then print the reverse side
Scanning hardware Single-sided flatbed Place each original on the platen individually
Multi-page PDF Supported Scan successive pages and add them to the same PDF
Automatic document feeder Not included in Canon’s G3270 specifications No stack-fed scanning workflow
2-on-1 copying Supported Scan each source page from the platen when prompted for the next original

That combination is suitable for occasional two-sided handouts and short scanning jobs. It is less convenient for a large double-sided packet, where an automatic duplex printer, an ADF, or both would remove much of the manual handling.

Does it print double-sided automatically?

No. “Double-sided Matte Paper Support” in the specification is a media-compatibility statement. It means the printer can accept that type of paper; it does not describe an automatic duplex mechanism. The duplex-related capability is still simplex printing.

How to make a two-sided document manually

You can still produce a two-sided sheet by running the paper through the printer twice. The exact wording of print-dialog options differs between Windows, macOS and individual applications, but the reliable process is:

  1. Open the document and choose the application’s Print command.
  2. Print only the first set of pages, normally the odd-numbered pages. If the document has unusual page orientation or mixed sizes, print a one- or two-page test first.
  3. Collect the output without changing the order of the sheets.
  4. Turn the stack and reload it in the paper tray so the blank sides face the correct direction for the second pass. The required flip direction depends on how your document is oriented and how the tray feeds paper.
  5. Print the remaining even-numbered pages. Check the first test sheet before committing a long run.

For portrait pages, flipping the stack like a book and flipping it over the short edge produce different results. If the back side appears upside down, change the flip direction before printing the rest. Keep the stack aligned and use the same paper orientation on both passes; a small feeding or ordering error can shift every reverse page.

What the manual method does not provide

  • The printer cannot detect which sheets have already received a first side.
  • It cannot automatically reverse a page, register front and back margins, or recover the order after a misfeed.
  • There is no automatic two-sided mode to select in place of the physical turn-and-reload step.

These limitations matter most for long reports, collated booklets and jobs where front-to-back alignment is critical. For a few pages, manual duplexing is usually workable if you test the feed direction first.

Can it scan multiple pages into one PDF?

Yes. Canon lists “Scan Multi-Page PDF” as a feature. The G3270 can combine successive platen scans into a single PDF file, so the final document can contain several pages rather than one file per scan.

The multi-page feature describes the output file, not an automatic feeding process. The scanner remains a single-sided flatbed: each sheet must be placed on the glass, scanned, removed and replaced by the next sheet. You should expect to be present for the entire stack and to confirm the continuation prompt or scan-next command after every page.

Flatbed workflow for a multi-page PDF

  1. Lift the scanner cover and place the first sheet face down on the platen, aligned with the reference mark.
  2. Start a scan using the Canon scanning software or the computer’s selected scan command, and choose PDF as the output format.
  3. After the first page finishes, leave the multi-page scan session open. Select the option to scan or add the next original rather than ending the job.
  4. Remove page one, place page two in the same orientation and position, and scan again.
  5. Repeat the scan-and-replace cycle for the rest of the stack.
  6. Choose the command that finishes or saves the document only after the final page. Review the page count and order before sending the PDF.

Canon’s documented platen workflow for successive originals uses a scan action for each next original. If you close the session after the first page, you will normally create a one-page PDF instead of continuing the existing document.

Physical limits of the scanner

  • Maximum flatbed document size: 8.5 × 11.7 inches.
  • Optical scan resolution: 600 × 1200 dpi.
  • Scanning surface: flatbed platen, single-sided operation.

Letter-size pages fit within the stated platen area. Longer or wider originals need to be reduced, split, or captured by another scanner. Optical resolution is the scanner’s hardware sampling specification; selecting a higher software resolution does not create additional optical detail.

Does the G3270 have an ADF?

No ADF is included in Canon’s published G3270 specifications. An ADF normally accepts a stack, separates the sheets and moves them past the scan sensor. The G3270 instead requires platen placement for each original, which is why a multi-page PDF is possible but a stack cannot be scanned unattended.

Why the ADF distinction matters

  • Short jobs: A handful of pages is manageable because each page only needs one placement and scan.
  • Long jobs: A 30-page packet requires 30 separate platen placements, with opportunities for missed pages, reversed pages or inconsistent alignment.
  • Double-sided originals: Each side must be handled as its own scan. There is no duplex scanning path to capture both sides in one pass.
  • Fragile or thick items: A flatbed is useful for books, photographs and originals that should not pass through rollers, provided they fit within the platen size.

What about 2-on-1 copying?

The G3270 supports 2-on-1 copying, which places two source pages onto one output sheet. This is a layout feature, not an automatic document-feeding or duplex feature.

Canon’s instructions describe placing the originals on the platen and selecting “Scan” for each next original. You therefore still handle the source pages individually. The printer can arrange the captured images on the output page, but it does not pull a stack through an ADF and it does not add automatic two-sided printing.

When 2-on-1 is useful

  • Reducing lecture notes, receipts or short documents to save paper.
  • Combining two single-sided originals on one side of a sheet.
  • Creating a compact reference copy when original readability remains acceptable at the reduced size.

For a two-sided source document, 2-on-1 changes the layout of the captured pages; it does not automatically capture both sides of each original. Plan to place every side that you want copied on the platen.

Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them

“Double-sided paper support” means duplex printing

It does not. Paper support identifies a compatible media type. Automatic duplex printing would require a separate capability stating that the printer can print both sides, and Canon identifies the G3270’s print mode as simplex.

“Multi-page PDF” means the scanner feeds multiple sheets

It does not. The term refers to one PDF containing several scanned images. On this model, the pages are added through repeated flatbed scans.

“2-on-1 copy” means two originals are scanned at once

It does not establish simultaneous or automatic scanning. The originals are scanned from the platen in sequence, then arranged together on the copy output.

Higher DPI creates a faster or larger automatic scan

Resolution affects image detail and file size, not document feeding. The G3270’s optical specification is 600 × 1200 dpi, while the physical process remains one page at a time.

Choosing the right workflow for your job

Your task G3270 approach Main consideration
Print a few sheets on both sides Manual two-pass printing Test page order and flip direction before the full run
Create a PDF from several loose pages Multi-page PDF with repeated platen scans Keep the scan session open until the last page
Scan a large stack quickly Not an automatic stack-feed workflow Use equipment with an ADF if unattended or high-volume scanning is required
Capture books, photos or delicate originals Flatbed scanning Stay within the 8.5 × 11.7-inch platen area
Put two source pages on one copy sheet 2-on-1 copy from sequential platen scans Each source page still needs individual placement

If automatic duplex output is a purchase requirement, look for a printer specification that explicitly says automatic duplex or two-sided printing. If hands-off scanning is the priority, verify both ADF presence and the feeder’s supported scan mode; an ADF alone does not guarantee duplex scanning. For frequent two-sided originals, check specifically for duplex ADF scanning.

Troubleshooting manual duplex printing

The back pages are upside down

Stop after the first test sheet, rotate the reloaded stack using the opposite edge, and print the reverse page again. The correct orientation depends on the application’s page layout and the tray’s feed direction.

The reverse pages are in the wrong order

Confirm whether the application printed pages from first to last or last to first, then change the even-page print order if that option is available. Do not mix sheets from separate attempts; re-sort the complete stack before the second pass.

Only one page appears in the PDF

The scan session was probably ended after the first capture. Start a multi-page PDF scan, use the scan-next command after each page, and save only after the final original has been added.

Edges are cropped or pages are misaligned

Align each sheet with the platen’s reference marks and keep the original within the 8.5 × 11.7-inch maximum area. Consistent placement matters when combining pages into one document or making 2-on-1 copies.

Bottom line

The Canon PIXMA G3270 is a simplex printer and simplex flatbed scanner. It cannot print both sides automatically and it has no ADF for stack scanning. It can, however, produce two-sided printouts through a manual second pass, create multi-page PDFs by scanning each page in sequence, and make 2-on-1 copies from individually placed originals. Those capabilities are practical for small jobs; high-volume duplex printing or scanning calls for hardware with explicit automatic duplex and ADF specifications.
