No. The Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) can be used without an Arlo Secure subscription for live 2K viewing, push notifications, and two-way audio. You need an eligible Arlo Secure plan when you want Arlo to record video in 2K to its cloud, keep Video History, or use subscription-based detection and notification features.
That distinction matters after any included trial ends: the doorbell does not become unusable, but its cloud recording and premium features can stop. Local recording is a separate question that depends on the specific compatible Arlo SmartHub or Base Station and storage setup.
What you can do without Arlo Secure
Arlo documents several core functions that continue without a service plan. These are the functions needed to answer a door remotely and receive alerts when the doorbell detects activity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Live streaming: You can open the Arlo Secure App and view the doorbell’s live feed, including 2K live streaming.
- Push notifications: The app can continue sending alerts to your phone when the doorbell detects motion or a button press, subject to your device and notification settings.
- Two-way audio: You can speak to visitors and hear their replies through the app.
Arlo’s support guidance explicitly lists live streaming, push notifications, and two-way audio as features that remain available without a service plan. Basic operation therefore does not require a recurring subscription.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2K live viewing does not require a SmartHub or Base Station
For the 2K live-streaming function, Arlo says the Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) works through the Arlo Secure App without requiring an Arlo SmartHub or Base Station. That statement concerns live streaming; it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every recording method works without hub hardware.
What requires an Arlo Secure plan
2K cloud recording
An Arlo Secure plan is required to record 2K video to Arlo’s cloud. Arlo’s support documentation states: “You must have an Arlo Secure plan to record in 2K.” Its 2K and 4K cloud-recording guidance also says that recording those resolutions requires a subscription plan that includes cloud recording for the relevant camera. The Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) is listed among the supported devices.
Without that plan, you can watch the live feed, but Arlo’s cloud will not provide the same 2K recorded clips and history. If your reason for buying the doorbell is to review what happened earlier, rather than only answer a visitor in real time, the subscription requirement is central.
Video History
Video History is unavailable without a service plan. This is the cloud-based history used to review previously captured clips in the app. Once a plan that includes the doorbell’s cloud recording is active, the available history and retention depend on the plan and region.

Smart detection and interactive notifications
Arlo describes premium features such as Video Cloud Storage, Interactive Notifications, and Video Object Detection as subscription features. The exact combination can differ by plan and country, so check the plan shown in your Arlo account before assuming that a particular detection category or notification action is included.
Activity Zones
Arlo lists Activity Zones among the features unavailable without a service plan. If you need to limit motion alerts to a porch, path, or other defined area, confirm that your selected plan supports the relevant Activity Zone capability in your region.

How Arlo Secure recording works
The subscription requirement applies to the destination and resolution: recording 2K video to Arlo’s cloud. It is not a requirement to turn on the camera, connect it to the app, or view a live 2K stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install and connect the doorbell using the Arlo Secure App and your home’s supported Wi-Fi setup.
- Open the live view in the app to confirm that the doorbell streams properly without a plan.
- Check the recording setting in the camera or subscription section of the app. A plan that does not include 2K cloud recording will not satisfy the 2K recording requirement.
- Review the plan’s retention and feature details before subscribing. The available recording resolution, history period, detection tools, and trial terms are tied to the plan and region.
If live viewing works but no recorded clips appear, that behavior is consistent with using the doorbell without a plan that includes cloud recording. It is not, by itself, evidence that the doorbell or camera connection has failed.

What happens when a trial ends?
After an Arlo trial or paid plan ends, Arlo’s documented no-plan behavior is that live streaming, push notifications, and two-way audio continue. Video History and Activity Zones are unavailable, and premium cloud services such as cloud storage, interactive notifications, and object detection are no longer maintained unless another eligible plan is active.
The practical change is therefore a move from recorded, searchable events to live-only access. Existing clips may be handled according to the terms that applied to your account and region; do not assume that every clip remains available indefinitely after cancellation. Check the account’s subscription page for the applicable retention and cancellation wording.
Can the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K record locally without Arlo Secure?
The cloud-recording requirement does not answer the local-storage question. Arlo’s 2K live-streaming documentation says a SmartHub or Base Station is not needed for live viewing, while local recording can depend on having a compatible hub, an enabled storage port or device, and the correct configuration.
Do not buy a hub or storage device on the assumption that every Arlo model supports local recording in the same way. Verify all of the following for your exact doorbell, hub or Base Station model, firmware, storage medium, and region:

- Whether the Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) is supported for local recording by that hub or Base Station.
- Whether recordings are saved in the resolution you expect, rather than being limited to a different mode.
- Whether the storage device must be formatted or left connected to the hub.
- How clips are accessed and whether the app requires an active connection to the hub.
- Whether local recording provides the same detection, history, or playback features as Arlo cloud recording.
The available guidance establishes that 2K cloud recording requires Arlo Secure; it does not establish a universal, subscription-free local-recording configuration for every doorbell installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much does Arlo Secure cost?
The exact recurring price is not stated in the available product guidance and can change by country, billing interval, promotion, and plan level. Arlo also notes that subscription details and feature availability vary by region. Check the subscription options displayed in your Arlo Secure App or on the Arlo account page for your location rather than relying on a price quoted for another market.
Before paying, compare the plan’s actual terms for:
- Whether the Video Doorbell 2K is covered.
- Whether cloud recording is offered in 2K for that device.
- How long clips are retained.
- Which detection and notification features are included.
- Whether the price is monthly, annual, introductory, or promotional.
- What happens to clips and features when the plan is cancelled.
Seven-day retention example
Arlo’s documentation describes a Secure plan offering cloud recording up to 2K with seven-day clip retention. That seven-day period belongs to the described plan terms, not necessarily every Arlo Secure offering worldwide. Confirm the retention window shown for your account before subscribing.

Is an Arlo Chime required?
No. A compatible chime is an optional accessory, not a subscription requirement. Arlo’s product information lists support for Arlo Chime V2. The doorbell’s app-based live view, notifications, and two-way audio do not become subscription-dependent merely because you add or omit a chime.
Which setup is right for you?
Choose no subscription if you mainly need live answering
A no-plan setup can make sense when you want to see who is at the door, receive a phone alert, and speak to the visitor. It also avoids a recurring fee, provided you accept that recorded Video History and the listed premium features will not be available.
Choose Arlo Secure if recorded evidence matters
A plan is the relevant choice when you need to review events after they happen, save 2K clips in Arlo’s cloud, use Video History, or access subscription-based detection and interactive notifications. Select a plan that explicitly includes 2K cloud recording for the doorbell; a generic subscription label is not enough.

Investigate local storage if you want to avoid cloud recording fees
If your priority is keeping recordings without a cloud subscription, investigate the exact compatible SmartHub or Base Station and storage arrangement before purchase. Treat local recording as a separate hardware and compatibility decision, not as an automatic feature of the doorbell’s no-subscription mode.
Troubleshooting: live view works, but 2K clips are missing
- Confirm the symptom. Make sure the problem is missing recorded clips, not failure of the live stream. Live 2K viewing can work without cloud recording.
- Check the active plan. In the Arlo account, verify that a current plan covers the Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) and includes 2K cloud recording.
- Check regional and plan limits. Recording resolution, retention, and premium features can vary by region and plan.
- Check account status after a trial. If the trial ended, the documented no-plan feature set applies: live streaming, push notifications, and two-way audio remain, while Video History and other premium services do not.
- Check local-storage assumptions. If you expected local clips, verify the supported SmartHub or Base Station, storage configuration, and device compatibility instead of assuming that live streaming proves local recording is enabled.
Bottom line for buyers
The Arlo Video Doorbell 2K does not require Arlo Secure for basic use. You can view live video in 2K, receive push notifications, and use two-way audio without a subscription, and Arlo says a SmartHub or Base Station is not required for that live-streaming function. You do need an eligible Arlo Secure plan to record 2K video to Arlo’s cloud and to retain subscription features such as Video History, Activity Zones, and supported smart detection tools.
