Yes. The Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 needs an internet connection whenever you access or use Alexa. Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use explicitly require both an Alexa-enabled product and an internet connection. The tablet can complete certain initial setup steps without Wi‑Fi, but that limited offline setup should not be confused with using Alexa offline.

You can connect through home Wi‑Fi or a smartphone’s personal hotspot. A hotspot is simply another way to supply the internet connection Alexa requires; it does not make Alexa work without internet.

What Amazon’s requirement means

Amazon states in section 1.1 of its Alexa Terms of Use: “An Alexa Enabled Product and internet connection are required to access and use Alexa.” The terms page lists a last-updated date of May 14, 2026. In practical terms, requests you send to Alexa must reach Amazon’s online service, and Alexa’s response must return to the tablet over that connection.

This applies whether you use the tablet’s wake word, an on-screen Alexa control, or another Alexa interface provided on the device. The requirement is for internet access, not merely for a tablet to show that it is connected to a local wireless network. Wi‑Fi that has no working internet route will not satisfy Alexa.

Amazon also cautions that Alexa services can differ by location and product. Some services may be unavailable in a particular area or on a particular Alexa-enabled product, and some may require a separate fee or subscription. An internet connection therefore makes Alexa reachable, but it does not guarantee that every Alexa feature is offered for your account, region, or tablet model.

Initial setup without Wi‑Fi versus using Alexa

The distinction that causes most confusion appears in Amazon’s How to Set Up Your Alexa Tablet instructions. Amazon lists an internet connection, your Wi‑Fi network name, and its password among the items to prepare. However, the same guide says you can complete initial setup steps without Wi‑Fi. Apps and some features become available after the tablet connects to Wi‑Fi.

“Initial setup” means configuring the tablet far enough to reach its normal interface and prepare it for a network. It does not mean that Alexa’s cloud service has been downloaded to the tablet or that voice requests can be processed locally. Once you try to use Alexa, the requirement in the Alexa Terms of Use applies.

The guide’s wording is intentionally limited: apps and some features require internet. It would be inaccurate to say that every tablet function stops without a connection, just as it would be inaccurate to say Alexa remains available offline. The safe rule is to treat offline setup as a temporary preparation stage and connect the tablet before testing Alexa.

Ways to give the tablet an internet connection

For Alexa, the source of the connection does not change the requirement. Both options below provide a path from the tablet to the internet.

Connection source What you do What Alexa still needs
Home or other Wi‑Fi Select the network name on the tablet and enter its password. The Wi‑Fi network must have working internet access.
Smartphone personal hotspot Turn on your phone’s personal hotspot, then select that hotspot’s network name on the tablet and enter the hotspot password. The phone must have mobile data service, and the hotspot must remain active while Alexa is used.

Amazon’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance for Alexa and Amazon Kids tablets specifically suggests trying a smartphone as a personal Wi‑Fi hotspot when ordinary Wi‑Fi is unavailable or failing. A hotspot can be useful in a hotel, vehicle, temporary workspace, or home with an outage. Your mobile carrier may impose data limits, charges, or tethering restrictions; those terms come from the carrier rather than from the tablet.

  1. Prepare the network details. Have the exact Wi‑Fi name (SSID) and password ready. If you plan to use a hotspot, enable the phone’s personal hotspot first and note its network name and password.
  2. Start the tablet’s setup. Follow the on-screen setup flow. Amazon allows certain initial setup steps to proceed without Wi‑Fi, so you may continue temporarily if a network is not available.
  3. Choose the Wi‑Fi network. When the setup flow asks for a connection, select your home network or the phone hotspot from the list.
  4. Enter the password carefully. Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive. A wrong character can make the tablet appear unable to connect even when the network itself is working.
  5. Wait for the connection to complete. Keep the tablet within reliable range of the router or phone. After it obtains internet access, apps and features that require connectivity can become available.
  6. Test Alexa only after the connection is confirmed. Ask a simple request and watch for the tablet’s response. If setup completed but Alexa cannot answer, check the internet path rather than assuming the offline setup made Alexa available.

The exact labels shown on the screen can vary with software updates and account state. The governing requirement remains the same: Alexa use starts only after the tablet has internet access.

Using a smartphone hotspot

A hotspot is the most practical alternative when you do not have a conventional Wi‑Fi network. It does not create a special offline mode. Instead, your phone shares its cellular data connection as a Wi‑Fi network that the tablet can join.

Before you turn on the hotspot

  • Confirm that the phone itself can open a web page over mobile data.
  • Check your carrier plan for hotspot support, data caps, and possible extra charges.
  • Keep the phone charged or connected to power; hotspot use can drain its battery faster.
  • Record the hotspot network name and password so you can enter them accurately on the tablet.

Connect the tablet

  1. Enable Personal Hotspot, Mobile Hotspot, or the equivalent setting on the phone.
  2. On the Alexa Tablet 11, open the Wi‑Fi network list in Settings.
  3. Select the hotspot’s network name.
  4. Enter the hotspot password and wait for the connected indicator.
  5. Leave the phone within range and keep its hotspot enabled while using Alexa.

If the phone has cellular service but the tablet still reports no internet, turn the hotspot off and on again, verify the password, and test another app on the tablet. A successful Wi‑Fi association alone does not prove that the phone is allowing internet traffic.

What to check when Alexa will not respond

Amazon’s tablet support page recommends a sequence that separates password problems, network problems, and tablet problems. Work through the checks in this order so you do not reset settings unnecessarily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Verify the network name and password

Open the tablet’s Wi‑Fi settings and confirm that you selected the intended network. Re-enter the password instead of relying on a saved entry if you recently changed it. For a hotspot, compare the tablet’s entry with the password currently displayed on the phone.

2. Test the network with another device

Connect a phone or computer to the same Wi‑Fi network and try to reach an internet site. If other devices also fail, the issue is likely the router, modem, service outage, or captive-portal sign-in rather than Alexa. Resolve that internet problem first.

3. Restart the tablet

Restarting forces the tablet to rebuild its wireless connection and can clear a temporary networking state. After it powers back on, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test Alexa again.

4. Try a smartphone hotspot

If your normal network remains unavailable, use the hotspot procedure above. Amazon lists this as a troubleshooting option. If Alexa works through the hotspot, the tablet and Alexa account are probably reachable and the original Wi‑Fi path needs attention.

5. Add a hidden network manually

If your router does not broadcast its network name, Amazon’s guidance describes manually adding a hidden network. You will need the exact SSID, security type, and password. An incorrectly entered security setting can prevent connection even when the SSID and password are correct.

6. Reset Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi settings only as a later step

Amazon also describes resetting Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi settings. This removes saved wireless information, so use it only after recording passwords and understanding that you will need to reconnect the tablet to networks afterward. A settings reset cannot remove Alexa’s internet requirement; it only addresses corrupted or incorrect connection data.

What the tablet may do while offline

Amazon’s setup guide establishes two limited facts: initial setup steps can be completed without Wi‑Fi, and apps and some features require internet. It does not promise that Alexa commands, cloud-based answers, streaming, account synchronization, or every app function will work without a connection.

Therefore, do not treat a responsive touchscreen or a completed setup wizard as proof that Alexa is available offline. If you disconnect Wi‑Fi after setup, Alexa remains subject to the terms requiring an internet connection. Features that depend on online services can fail, wait indefinitely, or display a connection error until the tablet is online again.

Some basic tablet operations may still be usable without internet, but availability depends on the app and feature. Amazon’s documentation does not provide a complete offline-feature list for the Alexa Tablet 11, so a specific offline capability should be verified in that app’s own documentation rather than inferred from Alexa’s setup behavior.

Device-level connectivity caveat

Amazon’s Device Terms of Use, last updated October 8, 2026, add a broader qualification: an Amazon device may require an internet connection or a third-party data plan for some features. This covers more than Alexa alone and explains why connectivity can affect different parts of the tablet in different ways.

In other words, the tablet is not an all-or-nothing offline device. Certain local functions can remain usable, while Alexa and other connected features wait for network access. The precise behavior can also change with software updates, app versions, account settings, and regional service availability.

Practical scenarios

At home with working Wi‑Fi

Connect the tablet to the household Wi‑Fi during setup and leave it connected. If Alexa stops responding, test another device on that same network before changing tablet settings. This quickly distinguishes an internet outage from an Alexa-specific issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During a home internet outage

Enable a smartphone hotspot and connect the tablet to it. Alexa can use that route while the hotspot remains active and the phone has mobile data. Monitor data usage and carrier limits, especially for services that transfer more than a short voice request.

In a hotel, school, or public network

Some public networks require a browser sign-in page before granting internet access. The tablet may show Wi‑Fi connected while Alexa still cannot reach its service until that sign-in is completed. If the network blocks the required traffic or does not support the sign-in flow, a phone hotspot is the practical alternative identified by Amazon.

After moving to a new router

The tablet may retain the old network details. Select the new network name and enter its password. If the router uses a hidden SSID, add it manually as described in Amazon’s troubleshooting instructions.

Bottom line for buyers and owners

The Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 does need internet to use Alexa. Amazon permits limited initial setup without Wi‑Fi, but that exception does not provide offline Alexa capability. Connect through reliable home Wi‑Fi or a smartphone hotspot, and troubleshoot the network when Alexa cannot respond. Also account for regional service limits and any separate subscription requirements that apply to a particular Alexa service.
