No. The 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition is not supported on Xbox consoles. 8BitDo’s own support FAQ answers the question “Can I use it on the XBOX consoles?” with “No,” and its product information lists Windows and Android rather than Xbox consoles as compatible platforms.
That limitation is easy to miss because Xbox does support some keyboards in some console games and apps. The console-wide feature is selective, however, and it does not override the manufacturer’s compatibility statement for this particular 8BitDo model.
What the “Xbox Edition” actually means
The Xbox Edition name describes the keyboard’s design, licensing and intended PC-oriented use; it is not a promise that the keyboard connects to or operates on an Xbox console. Xbox describes the Retro 87 Keyboard and Retro R8 Mouse – Xbox Edition as officially licensed Xbox peripherals that bring the nostalgia of the original Xbox to modern PC setups. That wording explains the branding context, but it does not change the supported-platform list.
For the keyboard itself, 8BitDo lists Windows and Android compatibility. Its product support FAQ has a separate console question and gives an unqualified “No” for Xbox consoles. When a manufacturer states that a model is not usable on a platform, the practical assumption should be that console menus, games and apps are unsupported unless the manufacturer later changes that guidance.

Do not infer console compatibility from any of these details:
- “Xbox Edition” in the product name.
- An official Xbox license or Xbox-colored design.
- The fact that Xbox supports certain other USB keyboards.
- The fact that the keyboard works on a Windows PC running Xbox software.
- Keyboard-and-mouse support offered by Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser.
Those are separate compatibility claims involving different hardware, software and connection environments.

How keyboard support works on Xbox consoles
Xbox’s accessibility guidance describes keyboard support narrowly: wired USB mice and keyboards can be used for navigation in select games and apps, and a keyboard can help users get around Xbox. “Select” is the important qualification. Support is implemented by the console software and individual titles, not guaranteed for every game, app or screen.
A game may support keyboard input for gameplay but not for its lobby, chat panel or every menu. An app may allow text entry while ignoring shortcut keys. Another title may provide no keyboard controls at all. Updates can also add, remove or alter input support. Consequently, plugging a keyboard into a console is not a universal compatibility test.

The product-specific limitation comes first in this case: 8BitDo says this exact Retro 87 Xbox Edition is not supported on Xbox consoles. Xbox’s general statement about some wired USB keyboards is useful context for other hardware, but it cannot be used to contradict the 8BitDo FAQ.
Finding Xbox games that support a keyboard and mouse
Microsoft Store exposes a Console Keyboard & Mouse category or filter intended to identify Xbox console titles designated for that input method. Use it as a title-level check instead of assuming that support is universal.
- Open the Microsoft Store on the web or on your Xbox and search for the Console Keyboard & Mouse category or filter.
- Open the listing for the specific game you want to play.
- Look for the keyboard-and-mouse capability information in the game’s listing and confirm that it applies to the Xbox console edition you use.
- Check the game publisher’s current control documentation or release notes if the listing is unclear, because support can vary by mode and can change after updates.
The live category showed 465 items across 10 pages when accessed in 2026. That is a changing catalog snapshot, not a permanent count and not a claim that all of those titles accept every keyboard model or every keyboard function.

Even when a game appears in the category, the listing does not turn the Retro 87 into a supported Xbox peripheral. You have to satisfy both conditions: the game must support keyboard input, and the physical keyboard must be supported by the console. The second condition fails for this 8BitDo model according to 8BitDo’s own documentation.

Cloud gaming and PC play are different from console play
Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser
On May 15, 2024, Xbox announced keyboard-and-mouse use for selected Xbox Cloud Gaming titles in Edge or Chrome. The announcement instructs players to select a game that supports the input method. In this arrangement, the keyboard is connected to the computer running the browser; it is not connected to an Xbox console running the game locally.
Cloud support is therefore a useful option for a Windows user who owns the Retro 87, but it does not establish console compatibility. It also applies only to games that Xbox has enabled for keyboard and mouse, rather than to the entire cloud catalog.
Xbox app on a Windows PC
Xbox’s PC guidance uses a keyboard-and-mouse badge to identify supported games in the Xbox app. A Windows computer can recognize the 8BitDo keyboard under the platforms 8BitDo lists, subject to the game’s own input requirements. The game may still limit keyboard use to certain modes or controls.

PC, browser and console are separate test environments. A successful Windows connection, a visible badge in the PC app or a playable cloud session should not be presented as evidence that the same keyboard will function when plugged into an Xbox console.

What to do if you already bought the keyboard
If your goal is direct Xbox console play
Do not spend time remapping keys or repeatedly reconnecting the Retro 87 in the hope that a game-specific setting will unlock it. The manufacturer’s answer is that the model cannot be used on Xbox consoles. Choose hardware that the console and the target game explicitly support instead, and verify the title in the Console Keyboard & Mouse listing before buying.
If your goal is PC gaming
Use the keyboard on a Windows computer, where 8BitDo lists it as compatible. Confirm that the individual PC game supports keyboard input and that its control settings expose the actions you need. An Xbox license does not guarantee that every Xbox-branded PC title accepts every key, macro or shortcut.
If your goal is browser-based cloud gaming
Use a supported version of Edge or Chrome on the computer and select a cloud game that Xbox identifies as keyboard-and-mouse compatible. Keep the distinction clear: the keyboard is serving the browser session, not an Xbox console. Availability and supported titles can change, so rely on the current game indicator rather than the 2024 announcement alone.
If you are troubleshooting another keyboard on Xbox
- Confirm that the keyboard is a wired USB model if you are relying on Xbox’s stated wired-keyboard support.
- Check whether the specific game or app is listed for console keyboard-and-mouse use.
- Test navigation in the Xbox interface separately from in-game controls; success in one area does not prove support in another.
- Check the game’s current control settings and update notes for mode-specific limitations.
These checks apply to supported keyboard hardware generally. They do not change the Retro 87 Xbox Edition’s model-specific status.

Common assumptions that lead to a wrong purchase
“It has an Xbox logo, so it must work on Xbox.”
Licensing governs branding and marketing rights, not necessarily device drivers or console certification. In this case, Xbox positions the keyboard as an officially licensed peripheral for modern PC setups, while 8BitDo’s compatibility information excludes Xbox consoles.
“Xbox accepts USB keyboards, so any USB keyboard should work.”
Xbox’s wording is limited to wired USB keyboards used for navigation in select games and apps. It does not promise support for every model, wireless protocol, firmware configuration or title.
“The game has keyboard support on PC, so the Xbox version must support it.”
PC and console versions can expose different input systems. A PC badge or a browser cloud session is evidence for that environment only. Check the console listing for the Xbox edition you intend to play.

Input support can be partial. Navigation, text entry and gameplay controls may be implemented independently, and a title can support one without supporting the others.
Decision checklist
Use this short sequence before treating an Xbox-themed keyboard as an Xbox-console purchase:
- Identify the exact model, not merely the product family or its Xbox branding.
- Read the manufacturer’s supported-platform list and console FAQ.
- Decide where the keyboard will be connected: Xbox console, Windows PC or a browser.
- For console use, verify the individual game or app in Microsoft Store’s Console Keyboard & Mouse category.
- For cloud or PC use, look for the current keyboard-and-mouse indicator in the browser or Xbox PC app.
- Do not use a successful PC or cloud connection as proof of console support.
Bottom line for the Retro 87 Xbox Edition
The exact 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition does not work on Xbox consoles according to 8BitDo’s official support FAQ. Xbox does offer selective support for wired USB keyboards in certain games and apps, and it supports keyboard-and-mouse play in designated PC and browser-cloud contexts.
