Yes—if you have the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller and update its firmware. Firmware v2.00 added shake-to-wake support for Nintendo Switch 2. Versions v2.01 and v2.02 subsequently improved wake-up stability and gyro behavior in Switch mode. The separately sold 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller is not equivalent: its official FAQ says motion control and wake-up are unsupported when it is connected through its 2.4G receiver.
The model name on a listing matters. Before troubleshooting, confirm whether the box says Bluetooth Controller or 2.4G Wireless Controller, then install the newest firmware offered for that exact model.
At a glance: which Ultimate 2 supports Switch 2 features?
| Controller | Switch 2 wake-up | Motion/gyro | Firmware requirement | Switch connection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller | Supported through shake-to-wake after firmware v2.00; later releases improve reliability | Supported; the product specification lists six-axis motion control and the changelog includes motion sensitivity optimization in Switch mode | Use v2.00 or newer; v2.01 and v2.02 contain additional wake and gyro improvements | Bluetooth pairing with Switch 2; verify exactly what accessories your regional package includes |
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller | Not supported through its 2.4G receiver | Not supported through its 2.4G receiver | No firmware update can add a feature that the vendor excludes for this connection method | Proprietary 2.4G receiver; do not assume it behaves like the Bluetooth model |
If a store listing says only “Ultimate 2,” treat that as incomplete information. The Bluetooth and 2.4G products have different hardware and different Switch 2 capabilities.
How to identify the correct controller
Look for the full product name
Read the model name on the retail box, controller label, invoice and the firmware updater. The wording Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller identifies the model documented as supporting Switch 2 wake-up and motion features. Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller identifies the receiver-based model whose official FAQ excludes those functions through the receiver.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not rely on a photograph of the controller alone. The shells can look similar, and marketplace sellers often shorten the title to “Ultimate 2.” A listing should state whether Bluetooth is supported and whether a 2.4G receiver, charging dock or another accessory is included. If the seller cannot provide the exact SKU or model name, assume the listing is ambiguous until you confirm it.
Why the distinction changes the answer
Wake-up and motion are not generic properties of every product carrying the Ultimate 2 name. They depend on the controller variant, its connection path and its firmware. The Bluetooth model has a Switch mode that supports the functions described by 8BitDo. The 2.4G model’s receiver connection is explicitly documented without motion control or wake-up, so pairing a receiver more successfully will not turn it into the Bluetooth version.
What each firmware version changed
8BitDo’s official firmware changelog documents a staged rollout rather than a single vague compatibility claim:

| Firmware | Documented change | What it means when testing |
|---|---|---|
| v2.00 | “Added support for shake-to-wake feature on the Switch 2 console.” | This is the minimum documented release for wake-up on the Bluetooth model. |
| v2.01 | “Optimized controller wake-up stability for Switch 2.” “Optimized motion control sensitivity in Switch mode.” |
Update beyond the initial implementation if wake-up is intermittent or gyro response feels wrong. |
| v2.02 | “Optimized controller stability for the Switch 2 wake-up function.” | Install this or any newer release offered for your model before judging reliability. |
The version numbers are controller firmware versions, not Switch 2 system versions. Updating the console alone does not update the controller. Conversely, installing firmware for the wrong Ultimate 2 variant can create confusion, so select the exact model in 8BitDo’s updater and verify the model name before applying an update.
What motion control does on the Bluetooth model
The Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller’s product specification lists six-axis motion control. In practical terms, the controller can report changes in orientation and movement to compatible Switch 2 software. Games may use that data for aiming, steering, camera adjustment, balancing, or motion gestures, depending on the game’s own implementation.
The v2.01 changelog’s reference to motion-control sensitivity is important: support is not limited to merely exposing a gyro sensor. The update adjusts how movement is interpreted in Switch mode. If a game recognizes the controller but the response is too weak, too sensitive or inconsistent, update before changing in-game settings or concluding that the controller lacks gyro support.

Motion support does not mean every game requires or uses motion input. A title can ignore gyro data, offer a toggle for motion aiming, or apply its own sensitivity and calibration options. Test with a game that explicitly supports motion controls and check that game’s controller settings.

How to set up the Bluetooth model for Switch 2
- Confirm the variant. Check for the words “Bluetooth Controller,” not merely “Ultimate 2.” If the package identifies the 2.4G Wireless Controller, use the receiver-specific expectations described below.
- Charge the controller. A low battery can make pairing and wake tests unreliable. If your package includes a dock, make sure the controller is seated correctly; otherwise connect it by the supplied charging cable.
- Install the controller updater. Use 8BitDo’s official firmware-update utility on a computer, connect the controller with a USB cable that carries data, and select the exact Ultimate 2 Bluetooth model. Do not disconnect the cable while the update is being written.
- Apply the newest available firmware. v2.00 introduced Switch 2 shake-to-wake, while v2.01 and v2.02 improved wake stability and motion behavior. If the updater offers a release newer than v2.02, use the newer release for the Bluetooth model.
- Put the controller in Switch mode. Use the mode selector or button combination identified for your hardware, then follow the controller’s pairing procedure. The required mode matters because the changelog’s motion optimization is specifically described for Switch mode.
- Pair it with Switch 2 over Bluetooth. Open the console’s controller-management screen, start a search for a new wireless controller, and press the controller’s sync button until it appears. Complete pairing, then confirm that button input works before testing special features.
- Test wake-up. Put Switch 2 into sleep rather than powering it completely off. After the controller has paired successfully, shake the controller as required by the shake-to-wake feature. A successful test should bring the sleeping console back to its active screen without reconnecting the receiver.
- Test motion in a compatible game. Enable that game’s motion option if it has one, then move and rotate the controller. If ordinary buttons work but motion does not, recheck the firmware version, Switch mode and the game’s own motion setting.
Keep the first test close to the console and remove other possible variables, such as a second controller being used as the active player controller. Once wake and motion work in a simple test, evaluate range and sensitivity under normal play.
Why a connected controller may not wake Switch 2
The controller is the 2.4G model
This is the most common source of a misleading result. The official FAQ for the Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller states: “Please note that NFC(amiibo), motion control, IR, HD rumble and wake up function are not supported.” That statement applies when the controller is used through its 2.4G receiver. A successful receiver connection therefore proves button communication only; it does not establish wake-up or gyro capability.

The Bluetooth model is below v2.00
Earlier firmware does not contain the documented Switch 2 shake-to-wake implementation. Connect the controller by USB, run the updater for the Bluetooth model and check the reported version. Do not stop at a pairing test with old firmware.
The controller has the initial implementation but not the stability fixes
Some units may wake once and then fail intermittently. Update past the initial v2.00 implementation because v2.01 and v2.02 specifically address wake-up stability. After updating, remove the old wireless pairing if necessary and pair the controller again, then repeat the sleep-and-shake test.

The controller is not actually in Switch mode
Feature behavior is mode-dependent. A controller can send button input in one mode while exposing different capabilities in another. Select Switch mode before pairing and verify that the console identifies the device as a wireless game controller.
Wireless pairing is stale or incomplete
If the controller connects only after repeated attempts, delete its old entry from the console’s controller list, restart the pairing process and keep the controller close during synchronization. A stable ordinary connection should be established before evaluating wake-up. If the controller never appears over Bluetooth and the package is the 2.4G model, that behavior is consistent with the model distinction rather than evidence of a defective gyro.
Motion works in one game but not another
Motion input is software-dependent. Confirm that the game supports gyro or other motion controls and that its setting is enabled. The controller’s six-axis hardware can be functioning even when a particular title does not read motion data or uses a different sensitivity scale.

When comparing listings, use all of these checks rather than searching for the words “Ultimate 2” alone:
- Exact SKU: Require “Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller” or “Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller” in the listing.
- Wake claim: For Switch 2, look for shake-to-wake support tied to the Bluetooth model and current firmware.
- Motion claim: Confirm six-axis motion support for the Bluetooth model; do not transfer that claim to the 2.4G receiver model.
- Firmware path: Make sure the seller identifies the updater-compatible model and that you can install current firmware before use.
- Connection method: Bluetooth pairing and a proprietary 2.4G receiver are different connection paths with different feature support.
- Included accessories: Check whether the regional package includes a receiver, dock, charging cable or other item you expect. Accessory differences can signal that you are looking at a different SKU.
If wake-up and gyro are priorities, choose the Bluetooth model by its full name and update it before the first test. If you already own the 2.4G model, use it for ordinary controller input, but do not expect firmware or receiver troubleshooting to add the wake and motion functions that 8BitDo excludes for that model.
Bottom line
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller works with Nintendo Switch 2 wake-up and motion controls when it is running firmware v2.00 or newer, with v2.01 and v2.02 improving reliability and gyro behavior. The Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller is a separate product: its receiver connection does not support motion control or wake-up. Verify the full SKU, update the correct controller, pair it in Switch mode and then test the console while it is sleeping.
