systemd-tmpfiles is used at boot and on a timer, but those invocations do different jobs. Boot-time setup services can remove and create configured files and directories; a separate clean service, activated by systemd-tmpfiles-clean.timer, performs age-based cleanup. The timer’s schedule depends on the system’s installed unit and overrides, so check the machine rather than assuming one universal interval.
What runs at boot, and what runs on the timer?
systemd-tmpfiles is the utility, not one single scheduled task. Its options select operations: --create creates configured files and directories, --remove removes configured paths, and --clean applies age-based cleanup to paths whose rules specify an age.
The systemd manual’s boot example says: “For example, during boot the following command line is executed to ensure that all temporary and volatile directories are removed and created according to the configuration file:” The example command is systemd-tmpfiles --remove --create. That boot setup is distinct from the clean service and timer, which run the age-based cleanup operation. systemd-tmpfiles manual

When does systemd clean /tmp?
Age-based cleanup is performed by systemd-tmpfiles-clean.service when its timer activates it. Only paths covered by applicable tmpfiles rules with an age parameter are candidates for this kind of cleanup; it is not simply a blanket deletion of everything under /tmp.
The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) recommends deleting /tmp files and directories whenever the system boots, while allowing site-specific policy. It states: “Although data stored in /tmp may be deleted in a site-specific manner, it is recommended that files and directories located in /tmp be deleted whenever the system is booted.” This is a recommendation, not a requirement that proves what any particular distribution configures. FHS: /tmp

For /var/tmp, the FHS says: “Files and directories located in /var/tmp must not be deleted when the system is booted.” It is intended for temporary files that persist across reboots. The FHS policy describes intended filesystem behavior; the actual tmpfiles rules and services on a particular host still determine what is configured there. FHS: /var/tmp

There is no single interval that can safely be assumed for every Linux system. The timer’s effective schedule may vary with the distribution, systemd version, and local or vendor overrides. Inspect the installed timer and the configuration actually loaded on the target host.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.System services and user services use different rules
System-wide tmpfiles operations use system configuration and services. User services use a separate user tmpfiles configuration and instance. As a result, the relevant rules—and the service context applying them—depend on whether the files belong to the system or to a user instance. The tmpfiles.d documentation describes the distinct configuration locations and behavior.
