Not according to any publicly documented setting. Valve confirms that Steam Frame has two inward-facing cameras used for eye tracking and foveated streaming, but its official product information does not confirm monocular (single-eye) tracking, a user-selectable tracked eye, or an option to switch between eyes. Camera count alone cannot establish those capabilities.
What Valve actually confirms
Valve’s official Steam Frame product page, checked October 13, 2026, describes eye tracking primarily as part of the headset’s foveated-streaming system. Valve writes: “Behind the scenes, we’re using low-latency eye tracking data to steer the best quality pixels only to where you’re looking.” In practical terms, the headset uses gaze information to concentrate streamed image detail in the part of the scene where the wearer is looking.
The specifications list “2x interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming.” That is the complete camera-related wording in the listed specifications. It does not say that one camera is dedicated to the left eye and the other to the right eye, that each camera operates independently, or that either camera can be selected in software.

Valve also advertises that foveated streaming “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” This is a Valve product-page claim, not an independently described benchmark. It explains why eye tracking matters to Steam Frame’s streaming design, but it provides no information about choosing a tracked eye.

What “single-eye tracking” would mean
People use “single-eye tracking” for several different behaviors, and separating them prevents a misleading yes-or-no interpretation.
Monocular operation
In a strict sense, single-eye tracking means the gaze system can estimate direction from one eye when the other eye is covered, unavailable, or producing unusable data. A headset might support this as a fallback for users with vision in only one eye or for situations where one camera’s view is obstructed.
Per-eye selection
A different feature is a control that lets a user choose “left,” “right,” or “both” during setup. Selection could be intended for calibration, accessibility, testing, or troubleshooting. It would require a documented interface or a stated software behavior; it cannot be inferred from the presence of two cameras.
Independent eye data for applications
Some systems expose separate measurements for each eye to software, while others combine the sensors into one gaze estimate. Independent data access is an application-programming question and is not implied by the hardware count in Steam Frame’s published specifications.

Valve’s page discusses the output needed for foveated streaming, not these three possible modes. Treat them as separate capabilities when reading future documentation or evaluating another headset.
Why two cameras do not answer the eye-switching question
Two inward-facing cameras could be arranged in multiple ways. They might each view one eye, overlap both eyes for depth or robustness, or feed a combined algorithm that does not expose a manual choice. Camera placement, lens coverage, infrared illumination, calibration logic, and software fallback rules all affect the result.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Even if each camera is physically near one eye, the software could require simultaneous measurements, automatically reject one eye when confidence is low, or use both views to produce a single gaze vector. Conversely, a design could permit one-eye operation without offering a user-facing switch. None of those implementation choices follows from “2x interior cameras.”
For that reason, the only defensible interpretation of the current specification is functional rather than mechanical: Steam Frame has inward-facing eye-tracking hardware intended to support foveated streaming. The public page does not define its per-eye behavior.
How eye tracking fits Steam Frame’s foveated streaming
Foveated streaming is a bandwidth-management technique. A headset receives a high-detail region where the wearer is looking and lower detail in peripheral regions that are less noticeable. The gaze estimate has to arrive quickly enough for that high-detail region to follow eye movements; otherwise, the sharp area could lag behind the user’s view.

Valve’s wording specifically connects low-latency eye-tracking data to steering “the best quality pixels” toward the user’s gaze. That explains the stated purpose of the cameras. It does not indicate whether the renderer uses a left-eye gaze, a right-eye gaze, a fused estimate, or another internal method. Nor does Valve state how the system behaves when one eye is closed or unavailable.

It is a typical-result claim made by Valve on the 2026 product page, with no methodology given there. It is not evidence that a single eye can be selected, and it should not be used to predict performance for a particular user or network.
What the display and IPD figures tell you
Steam Frame is listed with a 2160 × 2160 LCD panel for each eye and a target IPD range of 60–70 mm. These figures matter for image alignment and fit. Correct IPD adjustment can affect perceived sharpness and comfort because each display should sit in an appropriate position relative to the corresponding pupil.
They do not describe the eye-tracking algorithm. A separate display for each eye does not require a user-selectable eye tracker, and an adjustable IPD range does not imply that the headset can be configured to ignore one eye. Keep optical alignment, display resolution, and gaze sensing as separate specifications.
What this means for users with one usable eye or an obstructed view
Users who rely primarily on one eye
Do not assume that Steam Frame will provide a usable monocular mode based on the camera count. The available Valve documentation does not state whether setup can complete with one eye covered, whether the system automatically falls back to the visible eye, or whether foveated streaming remains active in that situation.

If monocular use is essential, treat it as an unresolved compatibility requirement. Look for a later Valve support article, setup guide, accessibility note, or release software documentation that explicitly describes one-eye calibration and operation. A general statement that the headset has eye tracking is not enough.
Glasses, inserts, and physical obstruction
The product page lists Zenni prescription inserts as an accessory, but it does not present them as a way to select an eye or change tracking behavior. Prescription fit may be relevant to comfort and optical alignment; it should not be interpreted as an eye-tracking control.
Likewise, an obstruction caused by fit, eyelashes, glasses, or an eye-covering accessory could affect camera visibility, but Valve’s public page does not document its occlusion handling or recovery behavior. Avoid promising that the headset will switch automatically when one camera loses a clear view.
Arcturus Vision Camera
Valve also lists an Arcturus Vision Camera for passthrough and spatial video. The cited product information does not describe that accessory as an eye-tracking sensor or as a device for choosing the tracked eye. It is therefore not a documented solution to monocular tracking.

What to verify when Steam Frame software documentation expands
If you need a definite answer before buying or configuring the headset, check for explicit wording in the release documentation rather than relying on photos or teardown interpretations. The useful questions are:
Best Value

- Does initial calibration require both eyes to be visible?
- Is there a left-eye, right-eye, or monocular option in the headset’s setup or accessibility settings?
- Does the system continue foveated streaming when one eye is closed or occluded?
- What happens when one camera reports low confidence or no usable pupil data?
- Can applications access separate left- and right-eye measurements, or only a combined gaze estimate?
- Is the behavior the same in standalone use, streamed PC VR, and any developer mode?
These questions distinguish a documented feature from a plausible implementation detail. A support answer should identify the software version and the exact setting or limitation; a statement about “two cameras” alone does not.
How to compare this issue with other VR headsets
There is no supported Steam Frame comparison table for left-eye versus right-eye selection because Valve has not published those options. If you are comparing headsets for accessibility or monocular use, use documented criteria rather than camera counts:
| Comparison criterion | Evidence to look for |
|---|---|
| Monocular tracking | An explicit statement that tracking works with one eye unavailable or covered. |
| Eye-selection control | A named left/right/both setting in setup, accessibility, or developer documentation. |
| Occlusion handling | Instructions for calibration failure, low-confidence data, and automatic fallback. |
| Data exposed to software | Documentation stating whether applications receive per-eye measurements or a fused gaze result. |
| Operating-mode differences | Separate behavior documented for standalone, PC-streamed, and application-specific use. |
Applying those criteria keeps the comparison fair: a headset may have two cameras but no manual eye switch, while another may document monocular fallback without exposing independent eye data.
Bottom line on switching eyes
Steam Frame’s published specifications establish eye-tracking hardware and a foveated-streaming use case. They do not establish single-eye tracking, a left/right eye selector, automatic eye fallback, or per-eye application data. Until Valve documents one of those behaviors in a specific software or support release, the safe answer is that single-eye tracking and switching eyes are unconfirmed—not features you should assume are available.
