Short answer: Standard Starlink Residential service is described as unlimited data with no contract, and you can cancel from your account. Residential Lite is also unlimited but deprioritized during congestion. Roam plans may include a fixed high-speed allowance, such as 50 GB or 100 GB, depending on the plan and market. Most customers can self-install; professional installation is available only in selected markets and may be free, paid, or subject to surcharges based on the address and work required.
“Unlimited” applies to the data allowance, not to a guaranteed speed. Network congestion and Starlink’s Fair Use Policy can reduce performance, especially for bandwidth-heavy use. Check the exact plan, address-level offer, and account terms at checkout before ordering.
At a glance: the answer to each Starlink fee and commitment question
| Question | Current general answer |
|---|---|
| Does Residential have a data cap? | No stated data cap. Starlink describes Residential data as unlimited. |
| Is Residential Lite unlimited? | Yes, but it is deprioritized, so busy-period speeds can be lower. |
| Are Roam plans unlimited? | Not always. Some tiers show 50 GB or 100 GB allowances; other Roam tiers are unlimited. |
| Is there a contract? | Starlink’s current ordering guidance says standard service has no contract and can be canceled at any time. |
| Can I try it and return it? | A trial of up to 30 days from activation is offered, subject to the applicable hardware-return conditions. |
| Is installation included? | Self-installation is the normal model. Professional installation is market-, address-, and plan-dependent. |
| Is professional installation free? | Some plan cards advertise free installation, but other jobs can incur fees for travel, routing, mounts, trenching, or difficult structures. |
How Starlink data allowances work
Residential: unlimited allowance, variable performance
Starlink’s Residential service-plan and Fair Use materials specify “Unlimited, Residential Data.” That means the plan does not publish a monthly gigabyte ceiling for normal Residential use. You do not need to purchase a data bucket or stop using the connection after reaching a stated quota.

Unlimited data is not a promise of a constant throughput. Starlink can manage traffic when a cell is congested. Streaming, large downloads, cloud backups, gaming updates, and other bandwidth-intensive activities may therefore run more slowly at busy times even though your allowance remains unlimited. It is more accurate to say Residential has no stated data cap than to say it is never throttled or that speed is guaranteed.

Residential Lite: unlimited but lower priority
Residential Lite also includes unlimited data, but Starlink identifies it as deprioritized. When demand is high, Lite traffic can receive lower priority than standard Residential traffic. Two homes with an unlimited allowance can consequently see different peak-time performance. If evening capacity is important, compare the plan’s priority and congestion language rather than looking only for the word “unlimited.”
Roam: read the exact allowance for your market
Roam is designed for travel and changing locations, so its data treatment is not identical to fixed-location Residential. Starlink listings and policy materials show finite high-speed allowances on some Roam tiers, including 50 GB or 100 GB, while other Roam tiers are described as unlimited. Those figures are not universal to every country or tier.
| Plan family | Data treatment | What to verify before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Residential | Unlimited Residential data | Address availability, congestion language, taxes, and the local monthly price |
| Residential Lite | Unlimited, deprioritized data | Whether Lite is offered at your address and how busy-period priority is described |
| Roam tier with allowance | Finite allowance such as 50 GB or 100 GB in some markets | The exact allowance, what happens after it is used, and eligible travel locations |
| Roam tier marked unlimited | Unlimited according to the displayed market plan | Fair Use terms, regional availability, and any mobility restrictions |
Never carry a Roam allowance from one country’s checkout page to another. Starlink presents availability and plan details by address and market, and the allowance shown on your own order is the controlling information.

Current standard ordering: generally no fixed term
Starlink’s ordering guidance states: “With Starlink, there are no contracts. You can cancel at any time, for any reason, on your account page.” For a current, standard Residential order, that means you are not normally committing to a 12-month service term simply by starting service.
Cancellation and the 30-day trial
Cancellation is initiated through the Starlink account page. Starlink also says customers can try the service for up to 30 days from activation and return the hardware for a full refund, provided the applicable return conditions are met. Keep the equipment, packaging, and accessories in the condition required by the account’s return instructions, and follow the stated shipping process; a trial does not waive those requirements.
Legacy and promotional terms can be different
Starlink previously offered a 12-Month Residential Service Option in selected markets. That option is discontinued for new activations, but an existing customer who chose it may still be subject to a Change Fee for cancellation, an address change, a plan change, or other actions during the 12-month term. Country-specific promotions or legacy accounts can also contain their own conditions. If your account shows a term, fee, or commitment that differs from the general ordering statement, follow the account-specific terms.
Can you install Starlink yourself?
Self-installation is the standard path
Starlink’s equipment is designed for plug-and-play setup. A typical self-installation consists of placing the dish where it has a usable view of the sky, connecting the supplied equipment, powering the system, and completing activation. You are responsible for choosing a safe location and for any permanent mounting, drilling, cable protection, or weatherproofing work you decide to add.
- Open the delivered kit and identify the dish, router, power equipment, and cables.
- Choose a stable temporary or permanent location with the clearest practical sky view and a safe route to the building entry point.
- Connect the dish, router, and power components as shown in the instructions supplied with your kit.
- Power on the system and complete activation through your Starlink account.
- Confirm that the connection is operating before committing to roof work, trenching, or other permanent construction.
A self-install avoids a professional labor charge, but it does not automatically include a roof mount, long replacement cable, trenching, or other accessories. Those items are separate purchasing and construction decisions.
What a professional installation normally includes
Trained third-party installers are available only in selected markets for Residential plans. Where offered, a standard appointment typically covers a site assessment, selecting the dish location, mounting the dish with a standard home mount, routing the cable to the nearest entry point, connecting and powering the router, activating the service, testing performance, and walking you through the app.

Installer guidance gives about 90 minutes as a typical duration for a standard professional installation. That is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed maximum: roof access, cable distance, building construction, weather, and other site conditions can change the job.
When installation costs extra
There is no single worldwide Starlink installation price. The amount shown to you depends on the country, address, plan, installer coverage, and the physical work required. A displayed plan card may advertise free professional installation, but that offer is not automatically available to every customer.
Recommended Free Tools
| Work or condition | How it affects the bill |
|---|---|
| Standard home installation in an eligible market | May be included or advertised as free when the address and plan qualify. |
| Extended travel to the property | May add a travel surcharge. |
| Certain home types or difficult access | May require a custom quote or additional labor. |
| Longer-than-standard cable routing | Can add cable, labor, or accessory costs. |
| Trenching or concealed/specialized routing | Usually falls outside the standard appointment and can incur extra fees. |
| Pole-mount work | Not included in the standard professional-installation scope. |
| Additional accessories, including special mounts | Purchased separately unless the offer explicitly says otherwise. |
| Deinstallation | Not supported by the installer service described by Starlink. |
Ask for the complete written scope before accepting an appointment: mount type, cable length, entry point, roof or pole work, trenching, travel, taxes, and any work another contractor must perform. A “free installation” label does not mean every site modification is free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Starlink billing starts
Service billing is separate from the date of a permanent installation appointment. Starlink states that activation and the billing start date do not depend on the appointment itself. Billing can begin when you power on and connect the equipment, or on the applicable delivery-based fallback date stated for your account. If you postpone a roof installation after activating the kit, you can therefore owe service charges while waiting for the appointment.
Read the activation and delivery dates displayed in your order confirmation. Those account-specific dates matter more than an installer’s later scheduling message.
Which setup makes sense for your situation?
| Your priority | What to look for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest upfront labor cost | Self-installation with the supplied hardware | You handle placement, routing, mounting, and any corrective work. |
| Professional help without a surprise bill | An eligible address with a clearly itemized installation offer | Free coverage may exclude travel, special routing, poles, or accessories. |
| Heavy fixed-location use | Standard Residential rather than a deprioritized option, subject to local availability | Unlimited allowance still does not guarantee a fixed speed during congestion. |
| Lower-priority service at a qualifying address | Residential Lite | Busy-period performance can be slower. |
| Travel between locations | Roam, with the exact allowance shown for your market | Some tiers have 50 GB or 100 GB limits instead of unlimited data. |
| Maximum flexibility to leave | Current standard ordering with no term shown in the account | Legacy or promotional terms can impose different fees. |
Pre-order checklist
- Confirm whether the checkout page says Residential, Residential Lite, or Roam.
- Record the displayed data allowance, especially if you are considering Roam.
- Read the Fair Use and congestion language; unlimited means no stated quota, not a speed guarantee.
- Check whether your account shows a contract, term, change fee, or other promotion-specific condition.
- Confirm the 30-day trial’s activation date, return deadline, hardware condition rules, and shipping instructions.
- Decide whether you will self-install or need a professional installer in your market.
- Get the installation scope in writing, including mount, cable route, travel, trenching, and taxes.
- Note the billing start date separately from any installation appointment.
Common problems and how to avoid them
“I was promised unlimited, but speeds dropped.”
Check whether the account is Residential Lite or another deprioritized option, then consider local congestion. A reduced speed at a busy time is compatible with an unlimited allowance under Starlink’s network-management policy.

“My Roam plan ran out of data.”
Review the exact Roam tier and market shown in your account. A 50 GB or 100 GB allowance can apply to some tiers, while another Roam plan may be unlimited. Do not assume the terms of a different country or listing.
“The installer quoted more than the plan card.”
Compare the quote with the standard scope. Extended travel, difficult home types, longer cables, trenching, specialized routing, pole mounts, and extra accessories are specifically the kinds of work that can sit outside a basic offer.
“I canceled, but billing did not stop immediately.”
Use the cancellation controls on the account page and check the effective date shown there. Cancellation does not erase charges that began under the activation or delivery rule, and a legacy 12-month option may have a change fee.
