Short answer: no. Star Wars Outlaws launches on SteamOS, but current evidence shows that it does not deliver a consistently good Steam Deck experience. SteamDB’s compatibility test (August 20, 2026) reports that the game’s graphics settings cannot be configured to run well on Deck. SteamDeckHQ’s hands-on testing (January 9, 2025) measured frame rates in the mid-20s, with dips below 20 FPS, and rated the experience 1/5. If a stable 30 FPS matters to you, do not buy the native Steam Deck version expecting settings tweaks to solve it.

What the Steam Deck can—and cannot—do with Star Wars Outlaws

There is an important difference between launchable and playable at a good standard. SteamDB records Star Wars Outlaws as running successfully on SteamOS, with Proton Experimental listed as the recommended compatibility runtime. That means the game can start and the operating system can run it. The same record explicitly says the available graphics configuration cannot make the game run well on Steam Deck.

Independent hands-on testing points to the same conclusion. In a January 9, 2025 review, SteamDeckHQ reported performance in the mid-20s FPS, including drops below 20 FPS during ordinary play and not only during spectacular set pieces. The publication scored the Deck experience 1/5. Reviewer Oliver Stogden summarized the result this way: “The game does not perform acceptably on the Steam Deck regardless of graphical settings.”

In practical terms, you may reach the main menu, load a save and move through the world, but image quality, frame pacing and responsiveness remain compromised. A game that technically runs is not the same as one that provides the smooth 30 FPS experience most Deck owners expect from a paid release.

Expected frame rate and image quality

Evidence or target What it means on Steam Deck
SteamDeckHQ hands-on result (January 9, 2025) Mid-20s FPS in testing, with occasional drops below 20 FPS; Deck score 1/5.
SteamDB compatibility test (August 20, 2026) SteamOS launch success, but graphics settings cannot be configured to run well on Deck.
Ubisoft minimum PC target (2024) 1080p at 30 FPS on Low with the Quality upscaler setting, using a GTX 1660 or RX 5600 XT-class GPU, 16 GB dual-channel RAM and an SSD.

The Ubisoft figure is a Windows desktop baseline, not a promise for Steam Deck. The Deck uses a low-power integrated AMD APU with shared system memory, while Ubisoft’s minimum specification assumes a separate graphics card and 16 GB of dual-channel memory. Translating the desktop target directly to the Deck leads to unrealistic expectations.

Why lowering settings does not solve the problem

Ray tracing remains a major constraint

SteamDeckHQ attributes much of the poor result to enforced ray tracing. Ray-traced lighting and reflections increase GPU workload even when the rest of the scene is set to Low. On Deck, the available graphics headroom is already limited by the device’s power envelope; a persistent ray-tracing cost leaves too little capacity for a stable frame rate.

Upscaling reduces resolution, not the entire workload

An upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a sharper output image. That can improve performance, but it cannot remove every cost associated with world streaming, lighting, animation, CPU simulation and ray tracing. The game can therefore look softer while still missing a reliable frame-time budget.

Frame pacing matters as much as the average

A reading in the mid-20s FPS is already below a 30 FPS target. Drops below 20 FPS make camera movement and aiming feel uneven, particularly when traversal streams new areas. A nominal cap cannot create frames the hardware cannot render; it only prevents the frame rate from fluctuating above the chosen ceiling.

Official PC requirements compared with the Deck

Ubisoft’s published minimum specification calls for Windows 10 or Windows 11, DirectX 12, a GTX 1660 or AMD RX 5600 XT-class GPU, 16 GB of dual-channel RAM and an SSD. The listed target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Low, with the upscaler set to Quality. The installation requires 65 GB of SSD space.

Steam Deck does not match that baseline in the way a desktop with a dedicated GTX 1660 or RX 5600 XT does. Its graphics processor and CPU share a constrained power budget, and system memory is shared between graphics and game tasks. Proton also adds a compatibility layer between the Windows build and SteamOS. Proton can run many games successfully, but it does not increase the Deck’s rendering resources.

Best settings if you already own the game

There is no evidence-backed preset that turns Outlaws into a consistently good Deck game. The following configuration is damage control for owners who want to experiment; it is not a reason to purchase the game for Deck play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the current game update. Keep the Steam installation fully patched before judging performance. Restart Steam after an update so shader and compatibility files are rebuilt when required.
  2. Select Proton Experimental. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select Proton Experimental. SteamDB lists this runtime as recommended for the title. A different Proton version may alter launch or controller behavior, but it does not change the underlying Deck performance verdict.
  3. Use the Low graphics preset. Apply the game’s lowest available preset first. Avoid manually raising texture, shadow, reflection or volumetric settings while troubleshooting; each consumes part of the same limited budget.
  4. Choose the most aggressive available upscaler mode. The goal is to reduce internal rendering resolution. Expect a softer image and shimmering detail. Ubisoft’s desktop minimum uses Quality upscaling, but that setting assumes much stronger hardware and should not be treated as a Deck target.
  5. Set a 20 FPS cap. A 20 FPS limit can make frame delivery less erratic than allowing the game to swing between the teens and the mid-20s. It does not produce a smooth 30 FPS experience; it simply avoids chasing an unattainable ceiling.
  6. Test in a representative save. Walk through a busy settlement, travel between areas and enter combat. A quiet interior can look acceptable while streaming-heavy outdoor scenes expose the real limitation.
  7. Use the Deck’s performance overlay. Watch frame rate, frame-time consistency and GPU utilization rather than relying only on how a menu feels. If the game remains below the cap with frequent spikes, further visual reductions are unlikely to create a stable result.

SteamDeckHQ reported that the game remained unacceptable regardless of graphical settings. Treat any short period that appears smooth as a local exception, not proof that the title has become Deck-friendly.

SteamOS, Proton and launcher issues

SteamDB’s record indicates that Star Wars Outlaws can run on SteamOS, but it also notes launcher and controller interaction caveats. If the game starts but input is missing, try launching from Gaming Mode, allow the Ubisoft launcher to finish its sign-in process, then return to the game. If a controller stops responding after the launcher appears, close and relaunch the title with the gamepad already connected.

Switching Proton versions is useful for diagnosing startup, video or input failures. It is not a performance upgrade. Proton Experimental may fix a compatibility regression or improve a launch sequence while leaving frame rate unchanged. If a runtime change makes the game fail to start, return to the previous Proton selection and verify the game files through Steam’s Properties menu.

Updates after launch: what changed and what did not

Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.5.1 lists a 3.30 GB Steam build identified as version 1.0.5.1. The notes mention NVIDIA 50-series support and DLSS 4 changes for PC. They do not identify a Steam Deck performance fix or claim that the game’s ray-tracing and frame-rate behavior on Deck has been solved.

Do not assume that a newer patch automatically changes the hardware recommendation. Check the specific patch notes for an explicit Steam Deck, SteamOS or low-power AMD performance improvement. Without such a statement and updated testing, the safer expectation remains the mid-20s FPS result reported by SteamDeckHQ and the SteamDB warning about graphics configuration.

Storage: the one accessory problem a microSD card can solve

The game requires 65 GB of SSD space according to Ubisoft’s PC specification. A 1 TB microSD card can provide useful capacity if your internal Deck storage is full, especially when several large games are installed. Move or install the game only after confirming that the card has adequate free space and is formatted for SteamOS.

Additional storage does not increase frame rate. It cannot provide a faster GPU, remove ray tracing or change the Deck’s power limit. Buy a larger card for capacity, not as a performance remedy.

Should you buy it on Steam for a Steam Deck?

If your primary goal is handheld play at a dependable 30 FPS, skip the native Deck purchase. The available evidence does not support a settings combination that reaches that standard consistently, and the lowest settings still leave performance below target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying on Steam can make sense when the Deck is only a secondary device and you also have access to stronger hardware. Steam’s cloud saves can let you move between systems, subject to the game and launcher completing synchronization correctly. In that case, treat Deck play as an occasional compromise rather than the main way you will play.

Better ways to play Star Wars Outlaws

Option Expected experience Main trade-off
Steam Deck natively Launches on SteamOS; typically mid-20s FPS with drops below 20 FPS in reported testing. Lowest portability cost if you already own a Deck, but poor consistency and image quality.
More powerful Windows PC Can target Ubisoft’s stated 1080p/30 FPS Low baseline when it meets the GTX 1660/RX 5600 XT-class GPU, 16 GB dual-channel RAM and SSD requirements. Higher hardware cost and less portable than Deck.
Current console hardware Uses a platform with a fixed, developer-targeted configuration rather than Deck’s low-power PC profile. Requires access to the console version and does not provide Steam library portability.
Cloud streaming Moves rendering to a remote server, so local GPU limits are avoided when the game is available. Requires a suitable service catalog, fast low-latency internet and tolerance for streaming compression; no specific provider or catalog is established here.

Use sustained frame rate, upscaled image quality, loading and streaming behavior, launcher friction, total cost and hardware fit as your decision criteria. A more powerful PC, a supported console or a suitable cloud-streaming service is preferable when smooth performance is more important than playing locally on Deck.

Common problems and practical fixes

The game will not launch

  • Confirm the game is updated and that at least 65 GB of free storage remains.
  • Try Proton Experimental through Steam’s Compatibility settings.
  • Restart Steam and the Deck after changing Proton versions.
  • Verify installed files if the launcher or executable reports corruption.

The Ubisoft launcher appears but controls do not work

  • Start the game from Gaming Mode with the controller already connected.
  • Complete any launcher sign-in window before returning to the game.
  • If input remains stuck, exit completely and relaunch rather than repeatedly changing graphics settings.

The game looks blurry after lowering settings

This is the expected cost of aggressive upscaling. Raising the upscaler quality may improve clarity but will reduce performance further. There is no evidence that a sharper preset can maintain a stable 30 FPS on Deck.

Bottom-line buying decision

Star Wars Outlaws is technically launchable on Steam Deck, but it does not run well there. Reported performance sits in the mid-20s FPS with drops below 20 FPS, SteamDB says the graphics configuration cannot be made to run well, and ray tracing remains a central limitation. Use Low settings, the most aggressive upscaler and a 20 FPS cap only as damage control if you already own it. For a dependable 30 FPS experience, play on hardware that meets or exceeds Ubisoft’s desktop minimum, use a supported console, or consider cloud streaming where availability and network conditions are appropriate.
