No. Spotify Lossless can decode in supported Spotify Premium mobile, tablet, and desktop apps, but the phone or computer is only one part of the playback chain. Bluetooth currently compresses the signal, so a Bluetooth speaker or headphone cannot deliver Spotify’s lossless stream unchanged. For the best chance of preserving lossless quality, use a wired connection or a compatible Spotify Connect device on Wi‑Fi.

Lossless is available only with Premium, and Spotify lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop app version 1.2.67 or later as supported baselines. You must also enable Lossless in the app’s Media quality settings and use a track, device, network, and connection path that support it.

What “lossless” means in Spotify’s system

Spotify Lossless delivers files at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. “Lossless” describes the stream reaching the playback software without the data reduction used by Spotify’s lossy quality modes; it does not promise that every device or connection will pass that stream unchanged to your ears.

There are several links in the chain: your Premium account, the Spotify app, the network connection, the device’s audio decoder, the output connection, and the speaker or headphones. A failure or limitation at any one of those links can reduce the result. A phone with a current app can decode the stream, for example, but sending its output over Bluetooth still requires compression before transmission.

Spotify’s lossless rollout expanded to more than 50 markets by October 6, 2025. Availability can still depend on your country, account, selected track, device certification, and software rollout, so an option missing from your app is not proof that the hardware is defective.

Does Spotify Lossless work on every phone?

No. Supported iPhone and Android models can run the mobile Spotify app and decode a Lossless stream, but Spotify does not state that every phone model is certified. The app version and account are only the first checks; the phone’s operating-system audio path and the connection to your headphones or speaker determine what you actually hear.

What a compatible phone must have

  • An active Spotify Premium subscription. Lossless is not included with free accounts.
  • The current supported mobile app baseline: version 9.0.58 or later, according to Spotify’s support information.
  • A region and account where the Lossless feature has been rolled out.
  • A network connection capable of sustaining Spotify’s recommended 1.5 to 2 Mbps for Lossless playback.
  • An output path that does not convert the stream to a lossy format. A wired headphone, amplifier, DAC, or speaker connection is the straightforward option; Bluetooth is not.

Why the phone alone is not enough

A phone may decode 24-bit/44.1 kHz audio internally and still lose the advantage at the output. Bluetooth transmission is the most common reason: the phone encodes the audio into a Bluetooth codec, and the receiving speaker or headphones decode that compressed signal. The music may sound good, but it is no longer an unchanged lossless transmission.

USB-C or Lightning audio can preserve more of the data when connected to a compatible wired DAC, headphone amplifier, or powered speaker. Compatibility still matters: the accessory must accept the phone’s digital output, the operating system must recognize it, and any volume or sample-rate conversion in the chain can alter the signal. Spotify’s support information establishes the lossless stream and connection recommendations, not a universal certification for every phone and accessory combination.

Can you hear Spotify Lossless on a computer?

Yes, a supported Windows or macOS desktop app can decode Spotify Lossless, but a computer is not automatically a lossless endpoint. Spotify lists desktop app version 1.2.67 or later as the supported baseline. Install the current app, sign in to Premium, select Lossless in Media quality, and then inspect the output device you choose.

Computer output paths

Output path What happens to Spotify Lossless Best use
Wired 3.5 mm, USB, or professional audio output Can preserve the stream more directly, provided the computer, driver, DAC, and receiving equipment support it. Desktop listening with wired headphones, an amplifier, or powered speakers.
Bluetooth headphones or speaker Spotify’s stream is compressed for Bluetooth transmission; it is not lossless at the receiver. Convenience and portability when unchanged lossless transmission is not the priority.
Spotify Connect over Wi‑Fi Can remain lossless on supported Connect hardware, subject to that model’s firmware and Spotify certification. Networked speakers, receivers, and multi-room playback.
External monitor, dock, or USB audio interface Depends on the interface and the final connection. The computer app being current does not certify every attached device. Desk or studio systems after checking the interface’s supported formats.

System audio settings can also intervene. Exclusive-mode, mixer, enhancement, or sample-rate settings may resample audio even when Spotify is sending a lossless file. Spotify does not claim that every operating-system mixer or third-party interface will preserve the original format, so treat “Lossless” in the app as the source setting, not a guarantee about the last conversion in your system.

Do Bluetooth speakers and headphones support Spotify Lossless?

Not for an unchanged lossless transmission. Spotify states: “Currently, Bluetooth doesn’t provide enough bandwidth to transmit lossless audio, so the signal has to be compressed before being sent.” That applies to Bluetooth speakers, headphones, earbuds, car systems, and Bluetooth adapters, regardless of whether the product advertises a higher-quality Bluetooth codec.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth codecs can differ in bitrate and efficiency, and some may sound better than others under particular conditions. They still encode the audio for a wireless Bluetooth link. Therefore, changing a phone’s Bluetooth codec setting or buying a speaker with a premium codec does not turn the Bluetooth path into Spotify Lossless.

When Bluetooth is still the sensible choice

  • You value freedom of movement more than bit-perfect transmission.
  • Your listening environment masks small differences between codecs.
  • The speaker or headphones have no wired input or you need a quick portable setup.
  • You have enabled Lossless as the source quality but understand that Bluetooth remains the final lossy link.

Choosing Bluetooth is not a failure of the Spotify app. It is a physical limitation of the connection path Spotify documents. To preserve the stream, switch to a wired input or a verified Spotify Connect route.

Can Spotify Connect deliver Lossless?

Often, but not on every Connect device. Spotify says Lossless works on many Spotify Connect devices, including supported models from brands such as Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. The exact model, firmware, country rollout, and current Spotify certification determine whether a particular speaker, receiver, or network streamer can receive Lossless.

How Spotify Connect differs from Bluetooth

With Connect, your phone or computer acts mainly as a controller while the selected device retrieves the stream over Wi‑Fi or its own network connection. That avoids the Bluetooth bandwidth bottleneck. A supported device can therefore receive the lossless stream directly, while your phone remains free for other tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect is not a blanket promise for every product carrying the Connect logo. A device may support Spotify Connect but not yet support Lossless, may require a firmware update, or may receive the feature only after a staged rollout. Verify the exact model in Spotify’s supported-device information and install the manufacturer’s current firmware before troubleshooting the app.

How to enable Lossless and choose a compatible path

  1. Confirm Premium. Sign in to the account that has the Premium subscription. A free account will not expose the Lossless setting.
  2. Update Spotify. On mobile or tablet, use app version 9.0.58 or later. On desktop, use version 1.2.67 or later. Restart the app after an update if the setting does not appear.
  3. Open the quality controls. In Spotify, open Settings and privacy, choose Media quality, and select Lossless for Wi‑Fi, cellular, and downloads as appropriate. Selecting it for Wi‑Fi does not automatically select it for cellular data or downloaded music.
  4. Pick the output route. For a wired setup, connect the headphones, DAC, amplifier, or speaker before starting playback. For network playback, open the Connect picker and select the intended device.
  5. Set the third-party device’s quality. While connected to a compatible third-party device, open its quality setting in the Connect interface and choose Lossless if the option is offered. Some devices expose a separate setting from the phone’s general Media quality menu.
  6. Play a supported track on a stable network. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5 to 2 Mbps connection for Lossless. Avoid testing during a congested connection or with a device that is repeatedly switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular data.
  7. Check the final link. If the output is Bluetooth, the signal is compressed despite the Lossless source setting. Move to a wired or verified Connect connection when unchanged transmission is the goal.

Which connection should you use?

Connection Lossless transmission? What to verify
Bluetooth No; Spotify says the signal must be compressed. Codec stability, battery, range, and sound preference rather than lossless certification.
Wired headphones or speakers Potentially, when the source device and downstream hardware support the stream without lossy encoding. Connector, DAC, operating-system mixer, amplifier, and speaker input compatibility.
Spotify Connect over Wi‑Fi Yes on supported devices; not guaranteed for every Connect product. Exact model, current firmware, regional rollout, and the device’s own Lossless setting.

For portable, one-person listening, a wired connection from a current phone or computer is the simplest route. For a living room or multi-room system, a certified Connect device avoids keeping the phone physically tethered. Bluetooth remains practical when convenience matters more than preserving the stream.

Why Lossless may be unavailable or sound unchanged

The Lossless option is missing

  • Check that the account is Premium and that the feature has rolled out in your market.
  • Update to mobile version 9.0.58 or later or desktop version 1.2.67 or later.
  • Sign out and back in, then reopen Settings and privacy → Media quality.
  • Try another supported device or app to distinguish an account rollout issue from a local installation problem.

A Connect device does not show Lossless

  • Confirm that the exact model, not merely the product family, is listed as supporting Lossless.
  • Install the latest firmware from the device manufacturer and restart the device.
  • Connect the phone and the device to a stable network, then reopen the Connect picker.
  • While the device is selected, look for its separate quality control and choose Lossless if available.

Playback drops, buffers, or switches quality

Lossless uses more data than lower quality modes. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5 to 2 Mbps connection; a connection that briefly falls below that level can cause buffering or interruptions. Test near the Wi‑Fi access point, reduce competing traffic, or use a stable wired network for a fixed Connect device. Cellular playback can also consume data quickly, so select Lossless for cellular only when your plan and coverage can sustain it.

You cannot hear an obvious difference

Lossless does not repair a poor source recording. Spotify notes that source recording quality, network stability, device compatibility, and connection type all affect results. A track mastered with limited dynamic range may not reveal a clear audible change, and Bluetooth will still compress the signal even when the app displays Lossless as the selected source quality. Evaluate the connection and equipment before assuming the feature is not active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you actually need for a reliable Lossless setup

  • Account: Spotify Premium in a market where Lossless is available.
  • Software: Mobile app 9.0.58 or later, or desktop app 1.2.67 or later.
  • Setting: Lossless selected separately for the relevant Wi‑Fi, cellular, or download use case.
  • Network: A steady connection around Spotify’s recommended 1.5 to 2 Mbps.
  • Endpoint: Wired headphones or speakers, or a Spotify Connect device whose exact model and firmware support Lossless.
  • Expectation: Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz at the source, with the final result limited by the recording, operating-system audio path, hardware, and connection.

So Spotify Lossless does not work on every phone, computer, or Bluetooth speaker in the sense of guaranteeing lossless sound at the listener. Supported apps can decode it on many phones and computers; Bluetooth cannot carry it unchanged; and Spotify Connect support is selective. Check the account, app version, setting, network, exact device model, firmware, and final connection in that order.
