Sonos does not always have to use your home Wi‑Fi, but it does need a working local network. You can run a compatible Sonos product by Ethernet and let supported speakers communicate over SonosNet, or keep selected products wired while others remain on home Wi‑Fi. In every arrangement, the Sonos app and speakers must be able to reach one another on the same local network. Internet access is a separate requirement: it is needed for many online services, but a phone’s cellular connection cannot replace the local network connection between the app and speakers.

Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, and internet are three different requirements

“Connected to Wi‑Fi” can mean two different things: a speaker joining your home wireless network, or the network itself having internet access. Sonos documentation treats the local network and the internet as separate dependencies. A wireless system joins your router’s Wi‑Fi. A wired system uses Ethernet for at least one supported product, but that Ethernet cable still leads to the router and local network; it is not a direct, router-free connection.

The published Sonos system requirements call for a Wi‑Fi router, a high-speed wired internet connection, and the Sonos app and products on the same subnet. The app requires local-network access to set up or connect to speakers. Sonos says cellular data is not used for streaming or for communication between the app and products, so turning on mobile data does not substitute for the home network.

Internet access and local-network access can fail independently. A router may continue letting speakers and the app communicate after an internet outage, while online music services stop working. Conversely, a phone may have internet over cellular data but still be unable to find Sonos products if it is not connected to the same local network.

Which Sonos connection setup should you choose?

Setup How products connect Best fit Important limits
Wireless Products join the home Wi‑Fi network. Homes with reliable coverage in every listening room; Sonos’s simplest and recommended option for most homes and small businesses. The app and products must be on the same local network. Guest and portal-login networks are incompatible.
Wired with SonosNet At least one supported product connects to the router by Ethernet and creates Sonos’s dedicated wireless network for compatible products. Rooms where Wi‑Fi is weak, unreliable, too slow, or unavailable. Only certain models can create or use SonosNet, and network topology matters.
Ethernet with SonosNet disabled One or more products use Ethernet while wireless products stay on the home Wi‑Fi network. Strong Wi‑Fi environments where you want particular products hardwired or prefer direct home-Wi‑Fi connections. This is an in-app network configuration, not an offline mode.

Sonos recommends wireless for most homes and small businesses. Ethernet is a problem-solving option, not automatically a higher-quality choice. Decide based on coverage, reliability, the ports and capabilities of your exact model, and how your router or mesh system is wired. Sonos describes the available arrangements in its wireless and wired setup guide.

How to use Sonos without putting every speaker on Wi‑Fi

Wired SonosNet setup

In a SonosNet arrangement, connect one supported product to a router with Ethernet. Compatible products can then communicate over Sonos’s dedicated wireless network instead of each joining the router’s Wi‑Fi. This can help when a router’s signal does not reach a distant room or when wireless interference causes dropouts.

  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
  • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.

  • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.
  1. Confirm that the product has an Ethernet port and is listed as supporting the wired Sonos setup. Do not assume that every current speaker can act as the first wired product.
  2. Connect that product directly to the router with a standard Ethernet cable. The cable should terminate at the router or the network topology Sonos supports; it does not connect the speaker directly to a phone or bypass the network.
  3. Open the Sonos app while the phone or tablet is connected to the same local network. Complete or update the system setup in the app.
  4. Place additional compatible products where they can use the SonosNet signal, and confirm that the app sees them before relocating equipment permanently.

Home-theater surrounds and subwoofers cannot be the first wired product that creates this dedicated network. Sonos also lists models and families that must use home Wi‑Fi or Ethernet where supported, including Arc Ultra, the Era 100 family, Era 300, the Move family, the Roam family, Play, and Sub 4. The exact compatibility list is product-specific and may change; verify the target model in the live Sonos setup guidance before buying cables or changing topology.

Ethernet with SonosNet turned off

Sonos also supports wiring one or more products while leaving SonosNet disabled. The Ethernet-connected products remain on the local network, and other speakers continue using your ordinary home Wi‑Fi. This arrangement can suit a home with good coverage where you want to hardwire a particular room, or where maintaining direct Wi‑Fi connections is preferable.

The setting is controlled in the Sonos app. It does not remove the need for a router, a local subnet, or internet access for services that require the internet. Move and Roam products keep Wi‑Fi enabled. If Wi‑Fi is disabled on a compatible Ethernet-connected product and you unplug its Ethernet cable, it will disappear from the app until Ethernet is connected again and the Wi‑Fi settings are restored. Sonos documents this behavior in Disable or enable WiFi on your Sonos products.

What Sonos needs on your network

Router, subnet, and local access

During setup, the phone or tablet running the Sonos app and the products must share the same subnet. A guest network commonly isolates clients from one another, so it is not compatible. Networks that require a browser-based portal login are also unsupported. On iOS and Android, grant the Sonos app local-network permission; without it, the app may not discover products even when the phone appears to be online.

  • Use a Wi‑Fi router with a high-speed wired internet connection.
  • Keep the app and speakers on the same local subnet.
  • Avoid guest networks and portal-login networks.
  • Do not rely on a router that provides only 5 GHz Wi‑Fi; Sonos lists this as unsupported.
  • Do not insert wireless range extenders or Ethernet-over-Power devices into a setup Sonos does not support.
  • A VPN that blocks access to local network resources can prevent discovery and control.

Sonos supports products using compatible 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, and many products running current software support additional Wi‑Fi modes. The exact bands and features depend on the product and software, so use the live system requirements page rather than treating a band list as universal.

Mesh-network wiring

Mesh systems require particular care in a wired Sonos setup. Sonos’s requirements state that a wired Sonos product must connect to the primary mesh node. Connecting it to a satellite node can create a topology that prevents products from discovering one another or causes unstable playback. If you are troubleshooting a mesh installation, temporarily connect the Sonos Ethernet cable to the primary node and retest before changing other settings.

Ethernet ports and model restrictions

Having an Ethernet socket does not necessarily mean a product can create SonosNet. Check both conditions: the model must have a usable Ethernet connection, and Sonos must list it as compatible with the desired mode. The exceptions named above are particularly important when planning a system around newer portable or Era products.

Will Sonos work when the internet is down?

An internet outage does not automatically prove that the entire Sonos system is unusable. If the router remains powered and the phone or tablet can reach the speakers over the local network, local control may continue. However, online streaming services normally need internet access, and the official material does not establish that every Sonos feature or service works during an outage. Do not describe Ethernet or SonosNet as a general “offline mode.”

A personal music library is a separate, networked use case. Sonos can index music stored on a personal computer or NAS, but the host must be powered on and reachable on the network. Sonos recommends a strong Wi‑Fi connection or Ethernet for a computer hosting the library. This is local-library playback over the network, not proof that a complete Sonos installation can operate without networking. Sonos states that music libraries are limited to 65,000 songs, with metadata potentially causing the memory limit to be reached sooner. See the troubleshooting guidance for a missing computer library at Computer could not be found error when using a music library.

Step-by-step choice for a difficult room

  1. Check coverage first. If Wi‑Fi reaches the room reliably and playback is stable, use the standard wireless setup. It involves the fewest network changes.
  2. Identify the exact Sonos model. Look for an Ethernet port and confirm whether that model can be the first wired product or must use home Wi‑Fi or Ethernet individually.
  3. Choose the topology. Use SonosNet when compatible products need a dedicated wireless path; use Ethernet with SonosNet disabled when selected products should be wired but the rest of the system can stay on home Wi‑Fi.
  4. Wire the correct point. On a mesh network, connect to the primary mesh node. Avoid guest SSIDs, portal networks, unsupported extenders, and powerline Ethernet devices.
  5. Verify discovery. With the phone on the same subnet, open the app and confirm every product appears. If a product vanishes after Wi‑Fi is disabled, reconnect Ethernet before attempting further changes.
  6. Test the real workload. Check the streaming services you use, grouped playback, and any computer or NAS library. A successful setup test only proves local discovery; it does not prove that internet-dependent services will work during an outage.

Troubleshooting when the app cannot find a speaker

The phone has internet, but Sonos is missing

Connect the phone to the home SSID rather than cellular data or a guest SSID. Check that the Sonos app has local-network permission and that no VPN is blocking local resources. Confirm that the phone and speaker are on the same subnet.

A wired speaker disappears after unplugging Ethernet

If Wi‑Fi was disabled for that product, unplugging Ethernet removes its only network path. Reconnect it to Ethernet to restore its Wi‑Fi settings, following Sonos’s Wi‑Fi enable/disable instructions.

Playback drops out in a mesh home

Check the cable’s endpoint first. A Sonos product used for a wired setup should connect to the primary mesh node, not a satellite. Then review whether the chosen model supports SonosNet and whether another wired product or unsupported extender is creating a conflicting topology.

A computer music library reports that the computer cannot be found

Keep the computer or NAS awake, connected to the same reachable network, and protected from firewall rules that block local access. Sonos’s library troubleshooting page covers this specific error at Computer could not be found error when using a music library.

What to remember before changing your setup

  • Wi‑Fi is optional for some products, but a local network is not.
  • Ethernet connects Sonos to the router; it does not create a standalone, internet-free system.
  • Wireless is Sonos’s recommendation for most homes when coverage is good.
  • Wired SonosNet requires a compatible first product and has model and topology restrictions.
  • The app needs local-network permission and cannot control speakers through cellular data alone.
  • Online services may stop during an internet outage even if local speaker communication continues.
