No. A smart home can determine whether someone is home without continuously collecting GPS coordinates. Wi‑Fi connection state, Bluetooth beacons, motion sensors, media activity, and a phone’s geofence entry or exit can all provide a home/away signal. Exact GPS is only necessary when an automation needs a person’s position beyond a simple home zone, such as distance-based arrival rules or several outdoor zones.
The important distinction is that presence is a state—home, away, or in a named zone—while location tracking exposes coordinates or movement context. Choose the least detailed signal that still lets your automation work.
Presence detection and location tracking are different things
Presence detection answers a limited question: “Should the house treat this person as present?” The result may be a binary state such as home or not_home, or a broad zone name. Location tracking answers a much more detailed question: “Where is the person, and how are they moving?” That can include latitude, longitude, route history, speed, and timestamps.
A geofence can bridge the two concepts. A phone may use location services to decide when it enters or leaves a boundary around the home, then send only the event to the automation platform. Depending on the integration, however, the platform may receive the underlying coordinates as well. A zone-only configuration deliberately discards that detail and keeps the useful state.

What signals can tell a smart home that someone is home?
| Method | Data disclosed | What it does well | Limitations and accuracy factors |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPS or geofence | Coordinates, or only zone entry and exit if configured that way | Arrivals, departures, outside-home zones, and distance-based rules | Needs phone permissions; affected by battery settings, signal, and geofence behavior. Exact coordinates reveal more than a home/away state. |
| Wi‑Fi or router presence | Whether a device is connected to the home network | Simple home/away detection without continuous outdoor coordinates | Fails when the phone is left behind, powered off, asleep, or connected through an unsupported network. Requires a compatible router integration. |
| Bluetooth beacon | Proximity to a fixed beacon | Nearby presence with less geographic detail than GPS | Range, walls, interference, and radio conditions affect detection. Requires compatible beacon hardware and integration. |
| Motion and media sensors | Activity detected by eligible devices | Works when phones are absent and can corroborate another signal | Activity may not identify which person is present. Some ecosystems count only supported sensors or media devices. |
| Zone Name Only in Home Assistant | A zone label such as home or not_home |
Retains zone automations while omitting exact coordinates | Removes fine-grained movement and map information, so it cannot support coordinate-based rules. |
Wi‑Fi and router detection
A compatible router integration can expose whether a phone, watch, or other device is attached to the home network. The automation platform sees connection and disconnection events rather than a trail of outdoor coordinates. This is often the lowest-friction choice for a home/away rule.
It is not a person-identification system. If a phone remains at home while its owner leaves, the network still reports that device as present. Guest devices, randomized MAC addresses, mesh-network handoffs, power-saving modes, and router integrations that poll infrequently can also create delayed or inconsistent state changes.
Bluetooth beacons
A beacon placed in the home broadcasts a short-range identifier. A compatible phone or hub can infer that the device is nearby without learning its position across town. Beacons are useful for room or near-door presence, but their effective range changes with walls, furniture, radio interference, and the orientation of the device.

Motion detectors, occupancy sensors, televisions, speakers, and other media devices can show that activity is occurring inside. Google Home describes its presence system as using signals from a phone’s location together with smart-home devices such as motion detectors or media activity. These signals can keep a home marked occupied when a phone is charging elsewhere in the house, but they may not establish which household member is present.

Geofencing and exact GPS
Geofencing is a boundary event, not necessarily a permanent location history. Apple defines condition monitoring, also called geofencing, as alerting an app when a user enters or exits a geographical region. A platform can use that event to switch from away to home without retaining a detailed route.
Exact GPS becomes justified when an automation needs more than one broad home boundary: for example, a “start heating when I am five kilometers away” rule, separate work and home zones, or a map showing the current position of a family member. Those benefits come with greater exposure and more permission, battery, and data-retention considerations.
How major platforms handle phone location
Google Home
Phone location is optional in Google Home. Google’s help documentation says: “The Google Home app doesn’t track where you are or where you’ve been beyond tracking whether or not you’re inside your home’s geofence.” It also says the system uses presence signals from the phone’s location and Google smart-home devices, including motion detectors and media activity.
This means a Google Home setup can combine a coarse geofence event with in-home activity rather than relying on GPS alone. If you do not need outdoor zones, disable phone-location access and let supported devices provide the presence signal. Check the operating system’s location permission separately from the app’s own presence setting; either layer can affect the result.

Home Assistant
Home Assistant supports several privacy levels. Its Companion app can report exact GPS, report only a zone name, or disable location reporting. Router-based and Bluetooth-based trackers provide additional ways to establish presence without a phone sending continuous coordinates.
The Companion documentation describes the privacy-focused option this way: “Zone Name Only sends just the zone name (or not_home), which can be useful for presence detection without exposing location.” Home Assistant’s privacy FAQ also states: “Home Assistant runs on your own hardware in your home, and your data is stored locally.” Local storage reduces cloud exposure, but each integration still has its own permissions, network access, and optional cloud services to review.
How to configure presence with the least location data
Option 1: Use a router signal for a basic home/away rule
- Confirm that your router model or network controller has a supported integration for your automation platform.
- Add the integration and select only the household devices that should represent a person, rather than every temporary guest device.
- Create a home rule from the device’s connected or disconnected state.
- Add a short confirmation delay before declaring someone away. This prevents a brief Wi‑Fi roam or router restart from turning off lights, security modes, or heating.
- Test with the phone both connected and disconnected, including a case where the phone is left at home, so you understand the identity limitation.
Option 2: Use Bluetooth proximity
- Place a compatible beacon in a stable location near the area you want to monitor.
- Pair or register the beacon with the phone, hub, or home-automation integration.
- Set the proximity condition for “near” or “detected,” then choose how long the signal must be absent before marking the device away.
- Walk through doors and rooms to identify dead spots and false disappearances.
- Keep the beacon identifier private; proximity data is still a form of household activity information even though it is not a GPS coordinate.
Option 3: Keep phone-based automations but hide coordinates in Home Assistant
- Open the Home Assistant Companion app’s location-sensor settings.
- Choose Zone Name Only instead of exact location reporting.
- Verify that the entity reports a zone such as
homeornot_home, not latitude and longitude. - Update automations to use the zone state. Rules that require distance, a map, or an outdoor coordinate will no longer work in this mode.
- Review the platform’s history and recorder settings so old location attributes are not retained from an earlier exact-GPS configuration.
Option 4: Combine sensors instead of collecting more location
Use two independent signals when a single signal is unreliable. For example, require either a known phone on the home network or recent motion in a common area before switching to away. A combination can reduce false departures without increasing geographic detail. It cannot prove that a particular person is home unless at least one signal is tied to that person’s device or credential.
When exact location is worth the privacy trade-off
Enable exact GPS only when the automation’s outcome depends on exact geography. Good examples include multiple named zones, distance-to-home triggers, arrival notifications based on a changing radius, or a map that household members have explicitly agreed to share.

For a single home boundary, exact coordinates generally add information without adding a necessary function. A zone-only report or router signal can deliver the same home/away decision while exposing less movement context. Explain the purpose to everyone whose device is enrolled, and make sure they can revoke access without losing control of unrelated home features.
Privacy checklist before enabling presence tracking
- Permissions: Review operating-system location, Bluetooth, local-network, and background-activity permissions for every participating app.
- Granularity: Choose home/away or zone-only data when coordinates are not required.
- History: Check who can view presence history, how long events are retained, and whether dashboards expose timestamps.
- Cloud access: Identify optional remote-access or cloud-processing features and disable those you do not need.
- Household consent: Tell residents and guests what is detected, which devices identify them, and how to opt out.
- Local operation: Where supported, use local protocols and local storage. Home Assistant notes that Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome can operate without internet access when the particular setup supports it.
- Failure behavior: Decide what happens when the network, phone battery, beacon, or cloud service is unavailable. A safe default is preferable for locks, alarms, and heating.
Why presence automations think you are away
The phone is not the person
Router and Bluetooth methods follow a device. A phone left on a charger, carried by another household member, or replaced with a new handset can produce a correct device state but a wrong assumption about the person.
Permissions or battery controls block updates
Background location, Bluetooth, local-network, or notification permissions may have been revoked. Battery-optimization settings can also delay an app’s update. Check the app’s permission page and the operating system’s background-activity controls before changing the automation.

Geofence boundaries are not exact property lines
A phone may cross a boundary without immediately generating an event. Signal conditions, device settings, and the integration’s polling or update policy affect timing. Avoid using a single instantaneous event to unlock a door or disable an alarm; require confirmation or a second signal.

Network changes break router integrations
A new router, mesh-node change, guest network, private address, or firmware update can alter the identifier that the integration expects. Reauthorize the integration and verify that the tracked device is visible on the same network segment.
Motion does not identify a resident
Motion can confirm activity but cannot always tell whether it came from a person, pet, visitor, or an automated device. Use it as corroboration rather than as the sole identity signal for sensitive actions.
How to evaluate accuracy without a misleading percentage
There is no authoritative universal accuracy percentage for smart-home presence detection. Results depend on the device, building materials, network design, permissions, signal quality, integration, and rule timing. Official documentation reviewed for these platforms does not provide a comparable cross-platform accuracy or battery-life figure.

Choosing the right method
| If you need… | Start with… | Accept the trade-off that… |
|---|---|---|
| Only “someone is home” | Motion or occupancy sensors, optionally combined with a router signal | Activity may not identify a specific person. |
| One person’s home/away state without coordinates | Router presence, Bluetooth proximity, or Home Assistant Zone Name Only | The system follows a device or broad zone, not a detailed route. |
| Reliable arrival and departure at one home | A geofence event with zone-only reporting, plus a confirmation signal | Events can be delayed by permissions, battery settings, and signal conditions. |
| Several outdoor zones or distance triggers | Exact GPS with explicit consent and retention limits | Coordinates and movement context are more sensitive. |
| Operation during an internet outage | Locally processed sensors and supported local protocols | Remote access and some integrations may not function without internet. |
Bottom line
Smart-home presence detection does not inherently require location tracking. Start with the smallest data source that can satisfy the automation: a router connection, Bluetooth proximity, in-home activity, or a zone-only report. Reserve exact GPS for rules that genuinely need outdoor coordinates or distance, and pair it with clear permissions, limited history, and a tested fallback when the signal disappears.
