Yes—but only in the model-development sense. Apple says its next-generation Apple Foundation Models were custom-built with Google and its Gemini models, with Google cloud technology also involved. Siri AI remains Apple’s assistant experience, delivered through Apple Intelligence and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute architecture. It is not the Google Gemini app or Google Assistant rebranded inside an iPhone.
The precise answer to “Does Siri AI use Google Gemini?”
Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration on January 12, 2026. Their joint statement said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, and that those models would help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri.
Apple later used more specific wording: the models behind its new experiences were “custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.” That description establishes a real technical relationship, but it does not mean Apple installed Google’s consumer chatbot as Siri. Apple presents the resulting foundation models, operating-system integration and assistant behavior as Apple products.

- Model technology: Google Gemini models and cloud technology contributed to the development of Apple’s next-generation foundation models.
- Product and assistant: Siri AI is Apple’s assistant, built into Apple Intelligence and connected to Apple operating-system features.
- Consumer apps: Siri is not established as the Gemini app, and it is not Google Assistant running under another name.
What Apple and Google actually agreed to
A multi-year foundation-model collaboration
The January 12, 2026 joint statement describes a continuing collaboration rather than a one-time licensing deal or a simple hand-off of Siri to Google. Apple and Google said future Apple Foundation Models would be based on Gemini models and cloud technology. They also tied that work to future Apple Intelligence features, specifically mentioning a more personalized Siri.

Apple’s later description matters because “based on” can be misunderstood. Apple says its models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and Gemini models. That wording indicates Apple is creating models for its own product and privacy architecture while using Google’s model technology as part of the development foundation. The public statements do not disclose a parameter count, a particular Gemini version, a percentage of Gemini code or a benchmark showing how much of any response comes from Google technology.
What the public statements do not say
- They do not say Siri is a Google Gemini account, app or subscription.
- They do not say every Siri request is sent to a public Gemini endpoint.
- They do not say Google Assistant is the user-facing assistant on Apple devices.
- They do not provide a model-size, accuracy or speed comparison between Siri AI and Gemini products.
How Siri AI fits into Apple Intelligence
Apple describes Siri AI as an assistant built on Apple Intelligence. Its announced capabilities include understanding personal context, recognizing what is onscreen, handling conversational follow-up questions and taking actions across the system and supported apps. Those are Apple’s product descriptions; they are not independent measurements of capability or a guarantee that every feature works on every device, language or region.
The foundation models are the underlying language and reasoning layer. Siri is the interface and action system that interprets a request, uses available context, and can invoke operating-system or app functions. In practical terms, a user still invokes Siri through Apple’s familiar system controls. The model collaboration changes the technology underneath, not the identity of the assistant shown to the user.

Apple also describes App Intents as the mechanism for connecting apps to Apple Intelligence features such as Siri AI. An app that exposes an App Intent can make an action available to Siri; that does not turn the app into a Gemini client, nor does it prove that the app’s action is processed by Google’s consumer services.

Siri AI versus the Gemini app and Google Assistant
These names refer to different layers. The following comparison keeps the distinctions Apple’s statements support.
| Question | Apple Foundation Models and Siri AI | Google Gemini app or Google Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Who presents the product to the user? | Apple, through Apple Intelligence, Siri AI and its operating systems | Google, through its own consumer assistant experiences |
| What is the relationship described publicly? | Apple says its next-generation models were custom-built with Google and Gemini models | Google’s own app or assistant is not described as being embedded in Siri |
| Where can processing occur? | On an eligible device or in Apple’s Private Cloud Compute architecture | Not established by Apple’s Siri announcements; Google products have their own service architecture |
| How are apps connected? | Apple’s App Intents framework can expose supported app actions to Apple Intelligence features | Google products use Google’s own app and service integrations |
| Is the user talking to Google Assistant when invoking Siri? | No such interpretation is supported; Apple executive Craig Federighi was quoted saying the amount of Google Assistant used is “none” | Google Assistant remains a separate Google-facing assistant product |
TechRadar’s June 9, 2026 report attributes the Google Assistant statement to Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi: “This is the amount of the Google assistant we use, which is none.” The quote addresses Google Assistant as the user-facing assistant. It does not cancel Apple’s published statements that Gemini models and technology were used to build Apple Foundation Models.
Where Siri AI runs: device processing and Private Cloud Compute
On-device processing
Apple says its foundation models can run on devices that meet Apple Intelligence requirements. On-device execution is the local path for supported tasks and depends on the device model, operating-system release, language and feature availability. Owning an iPhone, iPad or Mac is not by itself enough; Apple Intelligence eligibility is required.
Server-side processing through Private Cloud Compute
More demanding work can run in Apple’s Private Cloud Compute environment. Apple says it worked with Google and NVIDIA to run demanding Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud systems using NVIDIA GPUs while extending Private Cloud Compute protections. Apple identifies agentic tool use and complex reasoning as examples of workloads that may require that capacity.

Apple’s Security Research explanation identifies technical components for this deployment: NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs using TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. These details describe the infrastructure and security mechanisms; they do not mean the user is opening Google’s Gemini app or that Google Assistant is handling the conversation.
What Apple promises about privacy
Apple says Private Cloud Compute requests are processed without personal data being stored or made accessible to Apple or other parties. That is Apple’s stated privacy commitment. It should not be presented as an independently audited finding, and Apple’s public description does not provide a request-by-request map showing which provider handles each Siri prompt.
Consequently, “Siri uses Google cloud technology” and “Siri sends every question to Google” are not equivalent claims. The first is supported for some demanding Apple Intelligence workloads. The second is not established by Apple’s announcements.
Does Siri send your questions to Google Gemini?
Apple has not described Siri AI as forwarding users to the Gemini app or as exposing a Google Gemini conversation history. Its public explanation is about Apple Foundation Models and the infrastructure used to run them.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A request can be handled on the device or, when a task requires greater capacity, within Private Cloud Compute. Apple says those requests are designed so personal data is not stored or accessible to Apple or others. Because Apple does not publish a per-request routing table, readers should avoid claiming that every prompt stays on the phone or that Google can never be involved in server-side processing. The accurate statement is narrower: Apple uses Google’s model and cloud technology in its foundation-model collaboration, while Siri remains an Apple-controlled assistant with Apple’s stated Private Cloud Compute privacy architecture.
What developers should know about Gemini in Apple’s framework
Apple’s WWDC26 Apple Intelligence developer guide says the Foundation Models framework provides access to Apple’s on-device model. It also lets developers work with cloud models, including Claude and Gemini, or with other providers that conform to Apple’s Language Model protocol.
That developer option is separate from the Apple-Google collaboration behind Apple’s own foundation models. A developer choosing a Gemini-compatible cloud model is making an implementation decision for an app or service. It does not demonstrate that consumer Siri defaults to that model, and it does not identify which model handles a particular Siri request.

For Siri integration, developers should look at App Intents. Exposing an intent can let Apple Intelligence features perform a supported app action. The framework defines how the action is offered to the system; it does not disclose the private model architecture Apple uses for every interpretation or response.

When Siri AI is available
Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement says Siri AI began rolling out in beta in English with Apple’s 2027 software releases. Apple said French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish would follow the next month. Availability can change as Apple updates software, language support and regional approvals.
| Availability factor | Apple’s published position |
|---|---|
| Initial language | English beta with the 2027 software releases |
| Additional languages | French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish announced for the following month |
| European Union | Initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS |
| China | Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, unavailable while Apple works through regulatory requirements |
| Hardware | Requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device; Apple lists iPhone 16 models and specified iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch models |
| Language and settings | The device must use a supported language and meet Apple’s current software requirements |
Check Apple’s current regional, language, device and software requirements before assuming Siri AI will appear. A supported model in one country does not guarantee identical access in another, and beta availability can change between software releases.
What this means for people choosing or using Siri
If you want a Google-style chatbot
Siri AI should not be evaluated as a hidden Gemini app. Its value is its integration with Apple’s device context, onscreen information, system controls and supported app actions. If your priority is Google’s standalone conversational product, that is a different product choice and is not what Apple says Siri has become.

If you care about privacy
Apple’s stated design is to process eligible cloud requests through Private Cloud Compute without storing or exposing personal data to Apple or others. Treat that as the company’s commitment and read Apple’s current security documentation for implementation details. Do not infer from the use of Google Cloud infrastructure that the privacy model is identical to a normal consumer cloud chatbot.
If you are buying hardware for Siri AI
Start with Apple’s eligibility list rather than the product name alone. Apple specifically includes iPhone 16 models among supported Apple Intelligence devices, along with specified models in other product families. Confirm the exact model, operating-system version, supported language and regional status before purchase or setup.
Common misconceptions, corrected
- “Siri is just Gemini.” Not according to Apple. Gemini technology contributed to custom-built Apple Foundation Models; Siri is Apple’s integrated assistant experience.
- “Siri is Google Assistant now.” Apple’s published product description does not say this, and Federighi was quoted explicitly rejecting that interpretation.
- “Every Siri request goes to Google.” Apple describes both on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute. It does not publish a universal rule that routes every request to Google.
- “Any recent Apple device gets Siri AI.” Eligibility depends on specified hardware, software, language and region.
- “A developer using Gemini proves Siri uses that same model.” The Foundation Models framework’s provider options for developers are separate from Apple’s own model collaboration.
The bottom line on Apple, Gemini and Siri
Apple’s own wording supports a qualified yes: Google Gemini models and cloud technology are part of the collaboration used to build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which power Apple Intelligence experiences including Siri AI. The assistant users invoke remains Siri, with Apple’s system integration and Private Cloud Compute architecture. Calling it “Google Gemini inside Siri” is too broad; calling the collaboration nonexistent is also wrong.
