Yes—but Samsung’s standard US trade-in is tied to buying an eligible new Samsung product. Samsung applies the old phone’s assessed value as purchase credit, not a cash payout. Samsung also lists a separate route for trading in used Samsung smartphones without a Samsung-site purchase; that option is operated by Likewize and has its own current terms.
How Samsung’s old-phone trade-in works
For the standard program, choose an eligible new product on Samsung.com or in the Shop Samsung app and select a trade-in during checkout. If your old phone qualifies, Samsung displays its estimated credit and applies that amount to the purchase. The exact value depends on the old phone, its condition, the new product and the offer available when you order; there is no universal payout.
Samsung’s US offers page showed time-sensitive ceilings on October 7, 2026: up to $440 for a Galaxy S26+, up to $340 for a Galaxy S26, and up to $520+ for a Galaxy S25 Ultra. These are promotional maximums, not guaranteed values for every device. Check the current offer and your exact model’s value in Samsung’s trade-in flow before ordering.
Can you trade in a Samsung phone without buying a new one?
Samsung identifies a standalone trade-in option for used Samsung smartphones, operated independently by Likewize. It is separate from the Samsung.com purchase-linked credit. Check Samsung’s standalone trade-in information and the operator’s current offer and terms to confirm eligible models, value and payment method; the standard checkout credit terms do not establish what this separate route will pay.

What phones qualify for Samsung trade-in?
Samsung’s standard US terms require the trade-in to meet ownership, identity and functional checks. Before accepting an estimated credit, verify the exact requirements for your order in the Trade-In Program Terms.
- It must work: The phone must power on, hold a charge, avoid unexpected shutdowns, have a working display without black spots or pixelation, and have a functioning charging port.
- It must meet the condition rules: Cracks, excessive scratches or dents, liquid damage, corroded contacts, and battery damage or swelling can make it ineligible. A specific promotion may accept selected cracked devices, but only if its other requirements are met.
- You must own it outright: Leased phones are not eligible. Samsung also requires the device not to be on a banned list, to have a verified US FCC ID, and to retain original manufacturer components with unaltered IMEI or serial numbers.
- Security locks must be removed: Disable Reactivation Lock, Google Factory Reset Protection, iCloud/Find My iPhone and other anti-theft locks before shipment.
- Include the S Pen when applicable: If the phone originally came with an S Pen, Samsung’s terms say a missing or nonfunctional one can lead to a $30 chargeback.
How much will Samsung give you?
The checkout flow is the relevant place to check the value for your specific phone and order. Samsung can change eligibility and offers, and the displayed amount depends on the device and its condition as well as the new product being purchased. Treat any “up to” offer as a ceiling, not a promise. The example promotional ceilings above were listed by Samsung US on October 7, 2026; they may no longer be available.

How to prepare and ship the phone
- Confirm the model and offer. Select the trade-in in Samsung’s checkout flow and check the displayed value and promotion-specific terms.
- Back up your data. Move anything you want to keep, then remove personal information and factory-reset the phone.
- Remove locks and accounts. Turn off anti-theft protections, including Find My iPhone or Android factory-reset protection, so the recipient can verify the device.
- Pack the phone and any required item. Include the original S Pen if the traded device came with one. Follow the packing instructions and use Samsung’s provided label.
- Ship within the deadline and keep proof. The general US terms require handing the phone to the authorized shipping provider within 15 days after receiving the new product, unless the specific promotion sets another period. Samsung treats it as received when handed to that provider. Keep the handoff receipt and tracking number. Samsung’s trade-in FAQ recommends using a FedEx Ship Center for the documented return method and avoiding a drop box when you cannot confirm the handoff.
What happens if Samsung rejects the phone?
Samsung may charge back the trade-in amount if the phone arrives late, fails eligibility checks or differs from the description. The specific order’s offer terms control: Samsung’s summaries do not describe every rejection adjustment identically, so do not assume one fixed fee or deduction applies to all orders. The terms also allow Samsung to remotely disable the new product in certain cases when an eligible trade-in is not received or the submitted phone fails the requirements.
Samsung may, at its discretion, offer to return a rejected phone. If it does, the terms require you to accept within seven days, use the original address and sign for delivery. Requesting return reverses the full trade-in credit, plus applicable taxes. Phones with damaged or swollen batteries cannot be returned for safety reasons. If you do not request return through the offered process, the rejected phone will not be returned. Once Samsung accepts a phone after review, its terms say it cannot be returned.

Samsung trade-in, carrier credit or standalone trade-in?

Samsung says its instant purchase discount and carrier bill-credit programs are distinct and cannot be combined. Compare the net cost and conditions of the specific offers rather than treating their advertised credit amounts as equivalent. If you keep the phone or sell it elsewhere, the resale value and buyer protections depend on that separate channel and are not set by Samsung’s trade-in terms.
