Yes—Recuva Free is presented by its maker, CCleaner, as a no-cost file-recovery option with “advanced file recovery.” The vendor does not list a recovery-volume cap on its product page. But free access does not guarantee that a particular deleted file can be restored: results depend on whether its data has been overwritten or damaged, and Recuva itself warns it cannot guarantee recovery of any specific file.

What Recuva Free includes

CCleaner’s product page describes Recuva Free as offering advanced file recovery. The page lists virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support as additions to the Professional edition; it does not say that ordinary file recovery requires payment. The displayed Professional price was USD 24.95 when the page was accessed on October 7, 2026, but prices and product terms can change. See CCleaner’s current Recuva product page.

CCleaner’s Wizard documentation identifies disk imaging to a virtual hard drive (VHD) as a paid-version feature. That is distinct from scanning a physical drive for deleted files; the documentation does not establish that Professional improves ordinary recovery from physical media. Read the Recuva Wizard disk-imaging instructions.

What Recuva can scan—and what it cannot promise

CCleaner says Recuva can scan hard drives, memory cards, and USB flash drives, and supports NTFS, FAT, and exFAT file systems. Its documented exclusions include iOS devices, most Android devices connected through MTP, webmail, and securely deleted files. For NAS recovery, CCleaner says the drive must be connected directly to the computer using USB, IDE, or SATA. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every device or file will be recoverable. Check CCleaner’s capability and limitation list.

Unitek USB 3.0 to SATA IDE Hard Drive Adapter, for 2.5/3.5" HDD/SSD
  • 【Dual-Drive Simultaneous Use & Wide Compatibility】This hard drive adapter supports connecting one IDE drive and one SATA drive at the same time. It works with 2.5"/3.5" IDE HDDs, 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs, as well as optical drives like CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and DVD-RW. The dual-head IDE connector (40-pin and 44-pin) and a SATA III port give you maximum flexibility for data migration, backup, or drive recovery.
  • 【High-Speed Transfer with USB 3.0 & SATA III】Experience data transfer rates up to 6Gbps through the SATA III interface, with USB 3.0 connectivity (backward compatible with USB 2.0/1.1). Please ensure your computer has a USB-A port, as this hard drive reader uses a USB-A connection only.
  • 【Stable Power Supply for Reliable Operation】The included 12V/2A power adapter is essential for stable performance—please always connect it when using this IDE to USB adapter, especially when accessing two drives simultaneously. The 4-pin power cable is designed specifically for 3.5" IDE drives (not required for SATA drives).
  • 【Plug-and-Play with User-Friendly Design】No driver installation required. Supports hot-swapping for quick drive changes, and features an On/Off switch to protect your hard drives from unnecessary wear. The LED indicator clearly shows power and activity status.
  • 【What's Included & Support】You'll receive the USB 3.0 to IDE+SATA adapter, a USB 3.0 data cable, a 4-pin power cable, a 12V/2A power adapter, and our 24/7 dedicated email support.

Deleted data may remain on a drive until new activity overwrites it, but the name of a file in scan results does not prove its contents are intact. CCleaner says recovery can fail if data has been overwritten or corrupted, and that securely deleted files are typically unrecoverable. It also says recovery is more difficult on FAT than NTFS; fragmented files and continued drive activity can further reduce the chance of success. CCleaner does not provide a recovery-rate statistic that would support a reliable success percentage. Read CCleaner’s recovery FAQ.

Use Recuva without making recovery harder

  1. Stop using the affected drive as much as practical. Normal computer activity can write new data over the deleted file. If the files matter, avoid saving downloads, installing software, or copying files onto that drive. CCleaner advises not using the computer during a Deep Scan because activity can reduce the chance of recovery. See CCleaner’s recovery guide.
  2. Run Recuva from a different drive if practical. Minimize writes to the affected source. When asked where to save recovered files, choose a separate physical drive or other destination—not the drive being scanned. CCleaner specifically recommends a different destination to avoid overwriting data still being recovered. The same guide cautions that Recuva does not guarantee recovery of any specific file.
  3. Try a regular scan first; use Deep Scan when needed. Deep Scan can take hours. It searches for a documented set of file extensions rather than every possible file type, and results may contain recovered contents without the original filenames. If the original name is missing, inspect candidate files carefully rather than assuming a match based on a scan result alone. Read CCleaner’s explanation of Deep Scan.
  4. For a damaged or reformatted disk, consider the documented non-deleted-file option. CCleaner’s instructions say to enable “Scan for non-deleted files” before scanning in this situation. This setting is not assurance that a physically failing disk is safe to keep operating; stop if the drive is making unusual noises, disconnecting, or behaving unreliably. Follow CCleaner’s procedure for damaged or reformatted disks.
  5. Verify recovered files by opening them. Test them in the applications that normally use them. Recuva can locate and recover data, but it cannot repair contents that were already corrupted or overwritten.

Is Professional worth paying for?

Based on CCleaner’s listed features, Professional adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support; the Wizard documentation also places disk imaging to VHD in the paid version. The available vendor documentation does not show that paying is required for routine recovery from a physical hard drive, memory card, or USB flash drive. Decide based on whether you need those added features or support—not on an assumption that a paid edition can restore overwritten files.

When not to rely on Recuva

  • The data is especially valuable: repeated scans and ordinary drive use can increase the risk of overwriting recoverable data. Consider stopping and seeking qualified data-recovery help rather than experimenting on the only copy.
  • The drive may be physically failing: a software scan is not a repair, and continuing to operate failing media can be risky. The documented option for damaged or reformatted disks is not a promise that the hardware is safe.
  • The file was securely erased or overwritten: Recuva cannot reliably bring back data that no longer remains on the medium.
