Short answer: Pocket Casts for Android TV and Google TV plays video podcasts, including full-screen video, but it only streams them. The TV app cannot download episodes, play them offline, or run a sleep timer. Use the Pocket Casts app on an Android or iPhone when you need downloads, offline playback, or a timer, then use the TV app for connected viewing.
What the Pocket Casts TV app can and cannot do
Pocket Casts has a native app for Android TV and Google TV. It is built around remote-controlled playback on a television rather than the full feature set available on a phone or tablet. The main split is straightforward: video playback works on the TV, while offline tools and the sleep timer do not.
| Feature | Android TV / Google TV app | Android or iOS mobile app |
|---|---|---|
| Video podcasts | Supported, including full-screen playback | Supported |
| Download episodes | Not supported | Supported, including automatic downloads when configured |
| Offline playback | Not supported | Supported for downloaded episodes |
| Sleep timer | Not available | Available, with duration and end-of-episode options |
| Library and playback sync | Follows, folders, playlists, Up Next, progress and episode status sync when signed in | Uses the same account data |
That means a TV connected to the internet is suitable for watching or listening in the living room, but it is not a replacement for the mobile app if your routine depends on downloading episodes before travel or stopping playback automatically at bedtime.
Can you watch video podcasts on Android TV?
Yes. Video podcasts play in the Pocket Casts Android TV and Google TV app, and they can be watched full screen. This applies to video episodes that are available in a podcast’s feed; audio-only episodes remain audio playback.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
How full-screen viewing works
Select a video episode with the TV remote and start playback. The app presents the video on the television, and you can switch to full-screen viewing from the player. The experience is intended for a sofa and remote: you browse your subscribed shows and queues on the TV, then control playback without needing to keep your phone open.
What video playback still requires
- An active internet connection, because the TV app streams episodes rather than storing them for later.
- A supported Android TV or Google TV device running Android 9 or later.
- A podcast feed that actually supplies a video version of the episode. A show that publishes audio only cannot become video through the app.
Video playback support does not imply that every mobile feature appears on the television. The TV interface is optimized for selecting and playing content, not managing every aspect of a podcast library.
Can Pocket Casts download episodes on Android TV?
No. Pocket Casts does not provide episode downloads on Android TV or Google TV, and the TV app has no offline playback. Every episode played there is streamed over the network at the time you listen or watch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy a phone download does not solve TV offline playback
Downloads are stored locally by the device that made them. A download saved in the Android or iOS mobile app is not copied to the TV app, even when both devices use the same Pocket Casts account. Signing in synchronizes account information and listening state, not the local media files themselves.
For example, downloading a video episode on your phone before a flight makes that episode available offline on the phone. It does not make the same episode available in the Pocket Casts TV app while the television is disconnected. The TV app still needs an internet connection to stream it.
What mobile downloads can do
The Android and iOS apps support manual downloads and automatic downloads when you configure them. Downloaded episodes can be played without a connection, which is useful for travel, unreliable home broadband, or conserving mobile data. Those capabilities remain on the mobile device; they do not extend to Android TV through account sync.
Does Android TV or Google TV have a Pocket Casts sleep timer?
No. Sleep timer is unavailable in the Pocket Casts Android TV and Google TV app. The timer is limited to the iOS and Android mobile apps.

Timer options on mobile
On a phone or tablet, Pocket Casts provides timer choices such as a selected duration and stopping at the end of the current episode. The mobile player is therefore the place to configure an automatic cutoff before sleep or when you want playback to stop after a defined listening period.
Practical consequences for TV listening
If you start a podcast directly in the TV app, Pocket Casts will not stop it with an in-app timer. You must either monitor playback yourself or begin playback in a mobile app that has the timer control. The TV application does not inherit a mobile timer as a remote setting, so do not assume that setting one on your phone will add a timer control to the TV player.
What syncs between the TV and mobile apps?
Signing in with the same Pocket Casts account lets the apps share account-level library and listening information. The TV app can reflect your follows, folders, playlists, Up Next queue, listening progress and episode status. This lets you move between devices without rebuilding your library or losing your place.
Information that follows your account
- Follows: Podcasts you follow are available for browsing on the TV.
- Folders: Organizing shows into folders on a supported app is reflected in the account view.
- Playlists: Existing playlists can be selected and played on the TV.
- Up Next: The queue can be continued from the television after you arrange it elsewhere.
- Progress and status: Playback position and episode states can sync when you are signed in.
What does not sync as a usable TV file
Local downloads are the important exception. A mobile download remains on the mobile device and is not available for offline TV playback. The account can remember your episode status, but it does not transfer the downloaded audio or video file to the television.
Which Pocket Casts features are missing on Android TV?
The TV app omits several management and advanced-listening tools found in mobile or desktop versions. Knowing these limits prevents a frustrating search through the TV menus.
- Playlist creation and editing: You can play existing playlists, but creating or editing playlists is done in the mobile or desktop apps.
- Uploaded Files: Personal files uploaded to Pocket Casts are unavailable on TV.
- Bookmarks: Bookmark controls are not provided in the TV experience.
- Chapters: Chapter browsing and controls are unavailable on TV.
- Transcripts: Transcript viewing is not available in the TV app.
- Sharing and clips: The TV interface does not provide the mobile sharing and clipping tools.
- Stats: The statistics screen is unavailable on TV.
These omissions are separate from the basic ability to play an episode. A show can appear in your library and play successfully while its chapters, transcript or other supplementary controls remain accessible only on another device.
Supported hardware and Android version
Pocket Casts requires Android 9 or later for its Android TV and Google TV support. Devices identified for support include the Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield and compatible Android TV boxes.

| Hardware category | Requirement or example | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV streaming hardware | Google TV Streamer | Check that the device is running Android 9 or later and has current app support. |
| Chromecast hardware | Chromecast with Google TV | Use the Google TV interface and maintain an internet connection for streaming. |
| Android TV set-top box | Nvidia Shield | Confirm the box meets the Android-version requirement and can install the TV app. |
| Other TV boxes | Compatible Android TV boxes | Check the device’s Android TV certification, Android version and Play Store availability. |
Hardware availability and software menus can vary by country and device generation. The Android 9 requirement is the useful baseline, but a device also needs access to the Android TV or Google TV app distribution channel.

How to set up Pocket Casts for Android TV or Google TV
- Confirm compatibility. In the television or streaming box settings, check the Android version. Continue only if it is Android 9 or later and the device is a supported Android TV or Google TV platform.
- Install Pocket Casts. Open the device’s Google Play Store, search for Pocket Casts, choose the TV app and install it. If the app is not offered, the device may not meet the platform or certification requirements.
- Open the app and sign in. Use the same Pocket Casts account you use on your phone or tablet. Signing in is necessary for your follows, folders, playlists, Up Next queue, progress and episode status to appear.
- Allow the library to load. Give the app time to synchronize before judging that content is missing. Browse follows or playlists, then select an episode.
- Start playback. Use the remote to play an audio or video episode. For a video podcast, choose full-screen playback from the player.
- Plan around the network requirement. Keep the TV or streaming device connected while listening. There is no TV download switch and no offline mode to use after disconnecting.
- Manage advanced items elsewhere. Use the mobile or desktop app to create or edit playlists, configure automatic downloads, set a sleep timer, or use uploaded files, bookmarks, chapters, transcripts, sharing, clips and stats.
Using a phone with a non-Android-TV television
If your television does not run Android TV or Google TV, you can send playback from a phone or tablet through Chromecast. Start the episode in the Pocket Casts mobile app, use the Cast control, and select the compatible television or receiver.
This is a playback handoff, not a way to turn the television into an offline Pocket Casts player. The mobile device remains the place where downloads and the sleep timer are controlled, and the receiving television still needs the network connection required by casting.

You mainly watch video podcasts at home
The Android TV or Google TV app is a good fit when the television is connected and you want a large-screen, full-screen view controlled by a remote. Sign in first so your library and progress are available.
You commute, travel or have unreliable internet
Use the Android or iOS mobile app. Download episodes there and play the stored files offline. Do not expect those downloads to appear on the TV app later.
You fall asleep to podcasts
Start playback in the mobile app and use its sleep-timer controls. The TV app has no equivalent timer, so direct TV playback will continue until you stop it or the episode ends naturally.
You organize a large library
Do the organizational work on mobile or desktop. The TV app is useful for opening existing follows, folders, playlists and the Up Next queue, but playlist creation and editing are not part of the TV interface.

Troubleshooting common surprises
A downloaded episode is missing on the TV
That behavior is expected. Downloads are device-local, and Android TV has no download or offline feature. Stream the episode while connected, or play the downloaded copy on the phone or tablet that stored it.
The sleep timer control is not visible
The TV app does not offer one. Open Pocket Casts on Android or iOS to use a duration or end-of-episode timer instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A playlist appears but cannot be changed
Existing playlists can be played on TV, while creation and editing take place in the mobile or desktop app. Make the change there, then return to the TV after synchronization.
Video will not play
Check that the episode actually includes video, that the TV device is online, and that the device meets the Android 9-or-later requirement. Audio playback can work for a feed even when a particular episode has no video component.
The library looks empty
Verify that you signed in with the same Pocket Casts account used on the other device. Without the matching account, follows, folders, playlists, Up Next and progress cannot be synchronized into the TV app.
Bottom line
Pocket Casts on Android TV and Google TV is a connected streaming and viewing app. It supports video podcasts and full-screen playback, but not downloads, offline listening or sleep timers. Use a mobile device for those functions, and use the TV app when you want your synchronized library on a large screen.
