Over the Hill supports gamepads and keyboard input, and the developers recommend playing with a controller. The Steam listing specifies full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers. The game also offers online multiplayer for up to four players, with cross-play and individually tracked progress.
Steering-wheel and force-feedback support are not planned for the initial release. Local couch co-op is currently not feasible, so plan on online sessions rather than split-screen play.
Over the Hill input and multiplayer support at a glance
| Feature | What is supported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard | Yes | The developers say they are prioritizing keyboard and gamepad input. |
| Xbox controller | Yes | The Steam store lists full controller support and specifically identifies Xbox controllers. |
| PlayStation controller | Yes | The Steam store specifically identifies PlayStation controllers. |
| Other gamepads | Not individually confirmed | No complete compatibility list has been published. |
| Steering wheel | Not planned for the initial release | The official FAQ says wheel support is not planned for the initial release. |
| Force feedback | No native support announced | Because wheel support itself is not planned at launch, there is no announced force-feedback compatibility. |
| Online multiplayer | Yes | Up to four players total in a session. |
| Cross-play | Yes | The FAQ confirms cross-play, but does not provide a complete platform-by-platform compatibility matrix. |
| Local co-op | No, at present | The FAQ says local co-op is not feasible at the moment. |
This distinction matters if you are choosing equipment or organizing a group. A conventional gamepad is the supported launch-oriented choice; a racing wheel is not a supported purchase for this game; and multiplayer means an online group rather than several people sharing one screen.
Does Over the Hill support controllers?
Yes. The Steam store lists “Full Controller Support,” names Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and recommends using a controller. That is the clearest published compatibility information for the gamepad experience.

Xbox controllers
An Xbox controller is an explicitly identified supported option. If your controller is already recognized by your gaming platform, it is the most directly documented choice for playing Over the Hill with a gamepad. The listing does not limit support to one Xbox generation or to a particular wireless model, so the safest interpretation is that the game supports the standard Xbox-controller input profile rather than every accessory marketed for Xbox.
PlayStation controllers
PlayStation controllers are also named in the Steam listing. The listing does not publish a model-by-model table, so it does not establish that every older, third-party or specialty PlayStation device will behave identically. It does establish PlayStation gamepad support as a target of the PC release.
Keyboard input
Keyboard is part of the developers’ priority for the initial release. You therefore do not need a controller to play. A keyboard is the fallback when a gamepad is unavailable, when you prefer direct keyboard controls, or when a controller is not being detected correctly.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat “full controller support” tells you—and what it does not
“Full Controller Support” is a store-level compatibility designation. It indicates that the game is intended to be playable with a controller, rather than requiring a mouse and keyboard for essential interaction. It does not, by itself, provide a list of supported firmware versions, button prompts, remapping options, accessibility configurations or third-party adapters. No such complete list is published in the supplied developer information.
How to start a controller session
The game-specific guidance confirms the supported device categories, but it does not publish a special pairing procedure. Use the normal controller setup for your platform, then verify the game is receiving input before joining friends.

- Connect the gamepad first. Pair the wireless controller or connect it by USB before launching Over the Hill. This gives the operating system and game launcher the best chance to identify the device correctly.
- Confirm platform recognition. Check that the controller responds in your platform’s standard controller test or settings screen. If the platform does not see it, the game cannot use it.
- Launch Over the Hill with the controller connected. The developers recommend a controller, so use it as the primary device rather than assuming a wheel or specialty input will be substituted.
- Test navigation and movement. Confirm that the menus and basic movement respond. If the game appears to be reading keyboard input instead, close and relaunch with the gamepad connected.
- Remove input conflicts. If you use a remapping utility, virtual controller driver or multiple connected gamepads, temporarily disable the extra devices and test with one standard controller.
These steps do not imply a particular in-game remapping menu or a guaranteed solution for every adapter. They are a practical way to isolate whether a problem is caused by the controller connection or by the game session itself.
Does Over the Hill work with a steering wheel or force feedback?
Not for the initial release, based on the developers’ published statements. The official FAQ says, “We’re prioritizing gamepad and keyboard, so wheel support is not planned for the initial release.” A separate developer reply says wheel support is not planned “at least for release day,” while expressing interest in supporting more input devices in the future.

That means you should not buy a steering wheel, pedals or a shifter specifically for Over the Hill expecting native support. There is no published compatibility list for wheel models, no announced force-feedback implementation and no release date for a possible future wheel update.
Why a wheel may not behave like a controller
A wheel is not simply a larger gamepad. Games need to map steering axes, pedals, gear controls, dead zones, vibration and force-feedback effects separately. Without native wheel support, a wheel may be invisible to the game, expose incomplete controls or require third-party translation software. The developers have not promised that such workarounds will function, so they should not be treated as supported configurations.
What about force feedback?
Force feedback depends on the game sending effects to a compatible wheel driver. Since wheel support is not planned for the initial release, the developers have not announced force-feedback support either. A wheel turning under its own driver settings would not prove that Over the Hill is providing game-specific force effects.

Could wheel support arrive later?
The developer discussion leaves the possibility open by saying the team would like the game to work with many input devices in the future. That is an aspiration, not a schedule or a feature commitment. Do not assume a future update, supported wheel brand or force-feedback date until the developers publish one.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is Over the Hill multiplayer or co-op?
Yes. Each area can be played alone or with friends in multiplayer. Multiplayer supports up to four players total, making it an online cooperative experience for a small group rather than a large-server game.
Four players is the total session limit
The stated limit is four players in total, including you. A three-friend group can therefore fill one four-player session; a fifth person would need a separate session unless the developers change the limit. The available information does not establish whether every area, objective or future content will use a different limit, so treat four as the published multiplayer cap.
Online play, not local couch co-op
The official FAQ says local co-op is not feasible at the moment. There is no basis for expecting split-screen, shared-screen couch co-op or several players using one computer locally. If two people are in the same home, they should still plan on separate online connections and separate game sessions rather than one shared display.
Cross-play
The FAQ answers “Yes” to cross-play. Players on supported, cross-play-enabled platforms can therefore join the same multiplayer experience even when they are not using the same platform. The published answer does not enumerate every platform combination or explain whether cross-play requires a particular account service, so check the game’s current platform instructions when arranging a session.

How progress works in solo and multiplayer
Progress is tracked individually. Playing with friends does not merge everyone’s progression into one shared profile.
Objectives and checkpoints
Players can help one another reach objectives, but each player must reach the checkpoint themselves. If one person reaches a checkpoint while another has not, the second player should not assume that the checkpoint will automatically count for their profile. Everyone needs to complete the required checkpoint condition on their own character.
Progress carries between modes
Completed objectives and progress are saved and transferred between single-player and multiplayer. You can therefore make progress alone, join friends later, and continue without treating multiplayer as a separate campaign. The same principle works in reverse: progress earned with a group can be available when you return to solo play.
Practical planning for a group
At the end of an area, allow every participant to reach the relevant checkpoint before anyone leaves. This avoids a situation in which the group believes an objective is complete but one player’s individual save has not recorded it. Because progression is personal, each player should verify their own completion rather than relying only on the host’s status.
Choosing the right setup
| Your situation | Recommended setup | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want the developers’ recommended input method | Xbox or PlayStation gamepad | Both are explicitly named by the Steam listing, which also recommends a controller. |
| You do not own a controller | Keyboard | Keyboard is one of the input methods the developers are prioritizing. |
| You want to play with friends | Online session with up to four total players | Multiplayer is supported online and includes cross-play. |
| You want to share one screen | Not currently available | Local co-op is described as not feasible at the moment. |
| You own a racing wheel | Use a gamepad or keyboard instead | Wheel support is not planned for the initial release. |
| You need everyone’s progress saved | Have each player reach every checkpoint | Progress is individual, even when objectives are completed cooperatively. |
Troubleshooting common expectations
“My wheel is detected by the computer, but the game does not respond.”
Computer detection is not the same as game support. The developers have not planned wheel support for the initial release. Switch to a supported gamepad or keyboard rather than assuming a driver problem.

“My friend and I cannot play on one television.”
The published FAQ says local co-op is not feasible at present. Use online multiplayer with separate setups instead of looking for a hidden split-screen option.
“My friend finished the objective, but mine is incomplete.”
That behavior is consistent with individual progress tracking. Cooperative help does not remove the requirement for each player to reach the checkpoint. Have the affected player enter the checkpoint themselves.
“We are on different platforms. Can we still join?”
Cross-play is confirmed by the FAQ, so different supported platforms can play together. If invitations fail, verify that both players are using versions and platform services that currently participate in cross-play; the FAQ does not publish a complete compatibility matrix.
