Over the Hill supports online co-op for up to four players and is designed to run on Steam Deck through Proton. It does not support local or split-screen co-op. Mod support is planned first for livery customization; map and vehicle mods are not confirmed. The game has no planned native Linux build, even though its Steam listing includes SteamOS and Linux requirements.

The details below reflect the developer FAQ last edited September 17, 2026, and the Steam store listing current to the October 14, 2026 release.

Over the Hill at a glance

Question Current answer
Does it have co-op? Yes. Online multiplayer supports up to four players total.
Can friends play together? Yes, through online multiplayer. Progress is tracked separately for each player.
Is there couch or split-screen co-op? No. The developer says local co-op is not feasible at the moment.
Can players mod the game? Initial mod support is intended for livery mods.
Can players add custom cars or maps? That broader functionality is unconfirmed and depends on post-launch reception.
Does it run on Steam Deck? The developer is targeting smooth Steam Deck play through Proton.
Is there a native Linux build? No native Linux version is planned.
When did it release? October 14, 2026, according to the Steam store listing.

That combination makes the game a good fit for friends who can play online from separate machines, including Steam Deck handhelds, but a poor fit for a single television and one shared screen. Mod expectations should also stay modest at launch: visual liveries are the stated starting point, not a promise of a full user-created world or vehicle editor.

How online co-op works

Up to four players in one session

The developer FAQ states that multiplayer supports up to four players in total. That is a total session capacity, not four additional guests joining one host. A solo run remains available, so you can play alone when friends are offline and join an online session when they are available.

Silent Hill 2 (PS5)
  • Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
  • KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
  • Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K

Each player keeps individual progress

Progress is tracked individually. Playing with a group therefore does not merge everyone into one shared campaign save. Your own unlocks and advancement remain associated with your player profile, whether a particular outing is played alone or with friends.

What you need for an online session

  1. Install the game through Steam on each participating computer or Steam Deck.
  2. Have every player sign in to the Steam account that owns or can launch the game.
  3. Use the game’s online multiplayer and invitation flow once everyone is at the main menu. The developer has not published a definitive list of menu labels, so the exact wording may change between builds.
  4. Confirm that everyone is using the same current game version before attempting to join. A version mismatch is a common reason an online invitation fails after an update.

The published information confirms the player limit and individual progression, but it does not specify whether a host must remain connected, how matchmaking is organized, or whether cross-platform invitations beyond Steam are supported. Those details should be checked in the in-game help or updated developer documentation after release rather than assumed.

Online co-op versus local play

Online co-op and local co-op are separate features. The Steam listing identifies Online Co-op, while the developer FAQ explicitly says local co-op is not feasible at the moment. You should therefore plan for one online setup per participant instead of a split-screen arrangement on one PC, console, or television.

Does Over the Hill support split-screen or couch co-op?

No. The developer’s FAQ says, “While we understand the appeal of local co-op, implementing it is not feasible at the moment.” That rules out the usual couch-play scenarios: two controllers sharing one screen, a split-screen display, or a local network session presented as local co-op.

This limitation matters when choosing hardware. A single Steam Deck connected to a television is not documented as a two-player local setup. For a group, each person should expect to use a separate online device and account session. The game can still be played solo when a second device is unavailable.

What kind of modding is planned?

Livery mods are the initial target

The developer’s stated launch goal is support for livery mods. A livery changes the visual treatment of a vehicle—such as colors, patterns, logos, or other surface artwork—without necessarily changing the underlying vehicle physics or the world. This is the only mod category the FAQ presents as an initial-release objective.

Map and vehicle changes are not confirmed

Do not interpret “mod support” as confirmation that players can build new courses, terrain, cars, handling models, or missions. The FAQ says functionality beyond liveries will depend on how well the game is received after launch. Map and vehicle modding should therefore be treated as unconfirmed possibilities, not launch features.

What is still unknown

  • Whether a built-in editor, an external tool, or a file-based workflow will be used.
  • Where users will obtain or share livery files.
  • Whether mods can be enabled in online sessions and how all players would keep a session compatible.
  • Whether broader mod categories will arrive, and when.

Until the developer publishes those details, avoid installing unofficial files that claim to unlock map or vehicle editing. An unsupported package can break a save, conflict with an update, or create multiplayer compatibility problems. The reliable expectation at launch is limited visual customization, followed by possible expansion if the post-launch audience supports it.

Steam Deck compatibility: Proton, not native Linux

How the game is expected to run

The developer FAQ says, “A native Linux version is not planned, but we are committed to making sure ‘over the hill’ will run smoothly on the Steam Deck via Proton.” Proton is Steam’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS. In practical terms, the intended Deck path is the Windows build translated through Proton rather than a separately compiled Linux executable.

What the Steam listing confirms

The current Steam listing includes SteamOS and Linux requirements, which establishes that Steam Deck and SteamOS are part of the platform plan. It does not, by itself, establish a native Linux build. The developer’s explicit statement about Proton explains why both facts can appear together: the store can list SteamOS compatibility while the game runs through the compatibility layer.

What has not been promised

Neither the developer FAQ nor the cited Steam listing provides a Steam Deck Verified certification, a universal frame-rate target, a battery-life estimate, or identical performance across every Deck model and graphics setting. “Committed to making sure” describes the development goal, not a measured guarantee for every scene, update, or configuration.

Practical Deck setup

  1. Install the Steam release on the Deck and keep SteamOS and the game updated.
  2. Start with Steam’s default compatibility selection unless the developer later recommends a specific Proton version.
  3. Test both solo play and an online session. Multiplayer can expose issues that do not appear in an offline run.
  4. If an update introduces a launch or rendering problem, record the SteamOS version, Proton version, and game build before changing settings; that information makes a support report actionable.

A Deck owner can reasonably buy the game expecting an intended Proton path, but should not treat the listing as a promise of a particular frame rate or a Verified badge.

Release date October 14, 2026 Steam store listing
Storage 4 GB minimum Steam store system requirements
Memory 8 GB minimum Steam store system requirements
List price $24.99 USD Developer FAQ figure; the store may show a temporary discount

The supplied requirements do not establish a particular processor, graphics card, operating-system version, or Deck frame-rate target. Do not infer those specifications from the 4 GB storage and 8 GB memory figures. Check the live Steam listing for any revisions, regional pricing, launch promotion, or additional hardware details before purchasing.

Which play setup fits your group?

Setup Supported? What to expect
Solo on PC Yes Single-player mode is listed.
Online group Yes Up to four players total, with individual progress.
Two people on one screen No Local or split-screen co-op is not supported.
Steam Deck handheld Intended Runs through Proton; no native Linux build is planned.
Custom vehicle or map creation Unconfirmed Only livery mod support is the stated initial goal.

Choose online play if your group has separate machines and wants to share a session. Choose solo play if you are using one device or do not want to coordinate an online group. If your priority is building tracks or modifying vehicle behavior, wait for an explicit post-launch announcement rather than buying on the assumption that those tools will exist.

Troubleshooting the likely problem cases

An invitation does not connect

  • Verify that all players have the same game update installed.
  • Have each participant restart Steam and the game before trying another invitation.
  • Test a solo launch first. If solo play also fails, the problem is not limited to multiplayer.
  • Check the developer’s current support notes for server outages or known build-specific issues.

A livery mod is not visible

  • Confirm that the file is intended for the current release and the correct platform.
  • Follow the installation location and activation instructions supplied with the official mod workflow, once published.
  • Remove one newly installed mod at a time if the game stops loading; this isolates conflicts without deleting every file.

The Deck version behaves unexpectedly

  • Return to Steam’s default Proton choice if you previously forced a custom version.
  • Install pending SteamOS and game updates, then retest.
  • Note whether the failure occurs at launch, during rendering, or only in online play; these are different symptoms.
  • When contacting support, include the Deck model, SteamOS build, Proton version, and game version.

What could change after launch?

The most clearly conditional feature is broader modding. The developer says functionality beyond liveries depends on reception after release, so map editors, custom cars, and deeper gameplay changes may be considered later but have no confirmed schedule in the available information. Online player capacity, local co-op status, Proton behavior, store requirements, and price can also change through updates or revised store metadata. Recheck the developer FAQ and Steam listing for the latest version before making a purchase decision based on any of those details.
