Yes. Optimum says its provider-supplied gateway is included with all plans. A gateway combines modem and Wi-Fi router functions, so most customers do not need to buy a separate router just to get home Wi-Fi. The exact equipment and any charge shown on your account can depend on your service and current offer.
Does Optimum include a router?
Optimum’s certified-modem page says the Optimum-provided gateway is included with all plans. Because a gateway handles both the cable-modem connection and Wi-Fi routing, it provides the functions many people mean when they ask whether Optimum supplies a router.
That does not establish that every customer receives the same model or has the same equipment charge. The same page also has a separate modem-rental paragraph stating that rental starts “as low as $15 per month.” Since the page pairs that language with its included-gateway statement, do not assume $15 is a universal fee—or that every account is charged for a gateway. Check your order or account for the equipment and price that apply to your service.
Optimum’s Gateway 4 installation guide shows how that gateway family is activated and how to personalize the home Wi-Fi name and password. It is not evidence that Gateway 4 is supplied to every customer.

What is the difference between a modem, router, and gateway?
- Modem: Connects your home to the cable internet service. A modem is not necessarily wireless.
- Router: Shares an internet connection with devices on a home network, usually over Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
- Gateway: Combines modem and router functions in one unit.
These distinctions matter if you have Optimum phone service or are considering buying equipment. Optimum lists the Arris TM3402 as a DOCSIS 3.1 modem that can support two voice lines, but marks it “Not Wireless.” The listing does not establish that this model by itself supplies Wi-Fi. Confirm the modem, voice, and router arrangement with Optimum before purchasing equipment.
Should you use Optimum’s gateway or buy your own modem?
Optimum allows customers with internet service without phone service to use a customer-owned DOCSIS 3.1 modem, subject to exact compatibility and activation. The provider says DOCSIS 2.0 and DOCSIS 3.0 modems are not allowed for this use. Its published guidance does not certify every DOCSIS 3.1 model, so verify a specific device with Optimum before buying. Customers using their own modem must activate it through Optimum.

Optimum says its supplied modems receive 24/7 technical support and replacement if they malfunction or need upgrading. It says customer-purchased modems do not receive that support for malfunction or replacement when an upgrade is needed. Whether buying equipment saves money depends on the actual purchase price, any charge on your account, how long you keep service, and your willingness to handle replacements; the available information does not establish a universal savings amount.

What if the Wi-Fi signal does not reach every room?
A supplied gateway does not guarantee strong Wi-Fi in every part of a home. Optimum says an extender may be needed in some circumstances and provides an Optimum extender installation guide for supported Optimum equipment. That guide documents Optimum’s own setup route; it does not establish that every third-party extender or mesh system works with every gateway.
Optimum’s residential terms describe a wired connection for the extender installation they cover and caution that a wireless setup may not resolve every range or signal problem. The terms also mention that a monthly extender fee may apply. Those terms are older, so check your current account for availability, installation requirements, and any charge before ordering an extender.

What should you know about Optimum hotspots and network security?
Optimum’s residential terms say certain Altice/Optimum-provided wireless routers, gateways, managed access points, and Altice One units can broadcast a separate Optimum hotspot network in addition to the home network. The terms place responsibility for home-network security on the subscriber and do not guarantee that equipment or connections are secure. Since those terms may not reflect every current account or agreement, review the terms that apply to your service and secure your home Wi-Fi with a strong password.

If you replace an Optimum modem or gateway, return the old provider equipment as directed to avoid an unreturned-equipment charge. Optimum’s internet self-setup guidance and its Gateway 4 guide include return instructions. Optimum/Altice’s 2021 residential terms state that supplied modems, routers, and gateways remain company property unless otherwise specified in writing; your current agreement is the relevant reference for your account.
