Short answer: Opera Air can install many Chrome Web Store extensions through Opera’s documented add-on process, but compatibility varies by extension and Chrome API. Opera Sync can synchronize Opera browsing data—including bookmarks, open tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history, passwords and pinboards—between signed-in Opera devices. A Chrome-style profile switcher is not confirmed for the current Opera Air build, and Chrome extensions, settings or profile data should not be expected to migrate automatically.
What Opera Air supports at a glance
Opera Air is a Chromium-based browser, so it shares much of the web-platform and extension foundation used by Chrome. That foundation makes Chrome Web Store extensions possible, but it does not make Opera Air an identical Chrome environment. Opera documents a defined set of supported chrome.* APIs rather than promising complete API parity. An extension that depends on an unsupported API, a Chrome-only service, or a particular permission behavior may fail, lose features or require its own Opera-compatible version.
The browser’s minimalist presentation also does not mean it is permanently limited to its initial controls. In Opera’s October 15, 2026 launch announcement, the company described the approach this way: “Everything you want and need in a browser, however, can be added back in as needed.” In practical terms, tools can be added when you need them, including compatible extensions.

Can you install Chrome extensions on Opera Air?
Yes. Opera Help documents a specific route for installing extensions published in the Chrome Web Store. The route uses an Opera add-on called Install Chrome extensions; after it is installed, Chrome Web Store listings expose an Opera installation action.

Install a Chrome Web Store extension
- Open Opera Air’s Opera add-ons store.
- Search for Install Chrome extensions and install that add-on.
- Open the Chrome Web Store in Opera Air and find the extension you want.
- On the extension’s listing, choose Add to Opera. The wording is Opera’s documented installation label, even though the listing is hosted in the Chrome Web Store.
- Finish the prompts in Opera Air’s extensions manager. Review the permissions before accepting them.
- Open the extensions manager and test the extension on the sites and pages where you intend to use it.
This process does not turn Opera Air into Chrome. It supplies an installation bridge and lets Opera load a compatible extension package. The extension still runs against Opera’s implementation of Chromium and its supported APIs.
Why an extension may behave differently
Opera’s developer documentation says that Opera is based on Chromium and can run CRX extension files, while also documenting a supported subset of chrome.* APIs. The distinction matters for extensions that call less-common APIs, expect Chrome-specific UI, or rely on implementation details outside the common Chromium baseline.
- An extension may install and work normally because it uses widely supported APIs.
- It may install but have one disabled feature if a required API is unavailable.
- It may be blocked, show an error in the manager, or behave unpredictably when its code assumes Chrome-only behavior.
- Site permissions, private-window permissions and account sign-in requirements remain extension-specific; installing the package does not grant every permission automatically.
Test the extension’s core task rather than judging compatibility solely by whether the install completed. For example, a password manager should be tested on a login form, a content blocker on a page with known page elements, and a developer tool on the browser pages where it is intended to run.

Installing the same extension in Opera Air is not the same as importing its Chrome profile state. Opera’s documented sync pages describe Opera-account synchronization, while the extension instructions describe installation. Neither establishes that Chrome’s extension list, extension preferences, local databases, cookies or session state will be copied into Opera Air.

There is also an API-level limitation to understand. Opera’s developer documentation states that storage.sync is not supported. That means an extension cannot assume Chrome’s particular synchronized-storage API is available in Opera. It does not mean every extension loses all data: an extension can use other supported storage mechanisms, a service account, or its own export and import feature. The result depends on how that extension was designed.
Practical migration procedure for extensions
- Make a list of the extensions you actually use in Chrome. Include the extension’s publisher and version so similarly named listings are not confused.
- Look for an export, backup or account-based sync option inside each extension before leaving Chrome. Save recovery codes and other credentials through the extension’s documented process.
- Install each extension in Opera Air using the Chrome Web Store route.
- Sign in to the extension’s own account only through its normal settings page. Opera Sync cannot be assumed to supply that account data.
- Reapply site permissions, toolbar placement and feature toggles.
- Run a functional test, then keep the Chrome installation available until the Opera Air setup is verified.
Do not copy random extension files between browser folders. Opera documents local profile and extension-state locations, but folder layouts and state formats are implementation details. A manual file copy can create corrupted state, expose secrets or produce a setup that breaks after an update.
What does Opera Air browser sync include?
Opera’s account FAQ says computer-browser sync includes bookmarks, tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history and passwords. Opera’s sync feature page also lists bookmarks, Speed Dials, history, passwords, open tabs and pinboards as selectable data. The exact categories you see can depend on the sync controls presented in your build, so review those controls after signing in.
Enable and verify Opera Sync
- Open Opera Air’s account or sync controls and sign in with an Opera account.
- Open the sync settings and inspect the individual data categories.
- Enable only the categories you want stored and synchronized.
- On another Opera device, sign in to the same account and allow synchronization to complete.
- Check a known bookmark, an open tab, a history entry and a saved password on the second device. Verify Speed Dial and pinboards if you enabled them.
Passwords deserve extra care. Use a strong account password, protect the devices that can unlock the browser and avoid enabling password sync on a device you do not control. If an item is missing, first confirm that the category was enabled on the original device and that both devices are signed in to the same Opera account.

Opera Sync is not Chrome Sync
Chrome Sync and Opera Sync are separate services tied to different browser accounts and data models. Signing in to Opera Air does not establish a connection to a Google Chrome profile, and signing in to Chrome does not populate an Opera account. The official Opera pages establish the Opera data categories listed above; they do not promise import of a Chrome profile.
For a move from Chrome, plan for two distinct jobs:
- Browser data: export or otherwise migrate bookmarks, passwords and any other data Chrome makes available, then import or recreate it in Opera Air using the browser’s current tools.
- Extension state: reinstall extensions, sign in to their individual accounts and restore settings through each extension’s own export or backup facility.
Open tabs are especially easy to overlook. Opera Sync can synchronize open tabs between signed-in Opera browsers, but a Chrome tab set will not appear merely because both browsers use Chromium. Save important Chrome tabs as bookmarks or another deliberate list before switching.

Does Opera Air support Chrome profiles?
A Chrome-style profile manager is not confirmed by the official Opera Air material reviewed. Opera documents local profile and extension-state folders, which shows that the browser stores profile data locally, but that documentation is not a promise of a user-facing profile switcher with separate names, windows, accounts and settings.

Treat profile separation as unverified for the current build. Do not design a work/personal security process around assumed profiles until Opera Air’s own settings or help pages show a supported profile feature.
What “profiles” would normally provide
In a browser with a documented profile manager, each profile typically keeps its own history, cookies, bookmarks, extensions, open sessions and account sign-ins. That separation helps prevent a personal account from being used in a work window and makes it easier to maintain different extension sets. The existence of folders on disk does not by itself provide those guarantees: files may represent internal storage rather than a supported switching workflow.
Ways to reduce account mix-ups without assuming profiles
- Use separate browser windows and label them clearly, while remembering that window separation is not the same as isolated storage.
- Use separate operating-system user accounts when stronger separation is required and your organization permits it.
- Keep work and personal bookmarks in distinct folders and review the active account before saving passwords.
- Use separate Opera accounts only for the data categories you intentionally synchronize; separate accounts do not automatically create local browser isolation.
- Ask your organization whether its security policy requires a browser with formally supported profiles or managed identities.
Chrome-to-Opera Air migration checklist
- Inventory: record Chrome bookmarks, saved passwords, open tabs, extensions, extension-specific accounts and important site sessions.
- Protect access: confirm you can recover every extension and password-manager account before changing browsers.
- Export supported data: use Chrome and individual extensions’ built-in export tools where available. Keep exports encrypted and delete temporary files after import.
- Install Opera Air: complete initial setup, then sign in to an Opera account only if you want Opera Sync.
- Configure synchronization: select the Opera data categories you need and verify them on a second Opera device.
- Install extensions: add the Install Chrome extensions add-on, install extensions from the Chrome Web Store and test each one.
- Restore extension state: sign in to extension accounts and import settings only through their documented controls.
- Check separation: if you need work and personal isolation, verify whether the current Air build actually exposes profiles; otherwise use an approved alternative such as separate operating-system accounts.
- Retain a fallback: keep the original Chrome profile intact until bookmarks, passwords, extensions and required sessions work in Opera Air.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Chrome Web Store does not offer “Add to Opera”
Confirm that the Install Chrome extensions add-on is installed and enabled in Opera Air. Reload the store page, then check the extension manager for a blocked or incomplete installation. If the control still does not appear, the listing or the current Opera Air build may not support that installation path.
The extension installed but does nothing
Open the extensions manager and review whether it is enabled and allowed on the current site. Check the extension’s own options, required sign-in and site permissions. If the feature still fails, the extension may depend on an API Opera does not support; look for an Opera-specific release or contact the extension publisher.

Extension settings disappeared
Reinstalling an extension creates a new local installation state. Use the extension’s export/import or account restore feature if it provides one. Opera’s storage.sync limitation means Chrome’s synchronized extension storage cannot be assumed to restore those settings.
Bookmarks or passwords are missing on another device
Check that both devices use the same Opera account, that the relevant sync category is enabled and that synchronization has finished. Then check whether the item was actually present in the Opera Air source browser rather than only in Chrome.
You cannot find a profile switcher
Do not infer that profile switching exists because profile folders appear on disk. Check the current Opera Air settings and official help for a documented profile feature. Until it is documented, use a separation method your security requirements explicitly allow.
Bottom line for Chrome switchers
Opera Air is a viable Chromium-based destination for many Chrome extensions, provided you install them through Opera’s documented Chrome Web Store bridge and test compatibility. Opera Sync can carry the listed Opera browsing data between signed-in Opera devices, but it is not a Chrome Sync replacement and does not promise automatic extension-state migration. Chrome-style profiles remain unconfirmed, so treat work/personal separation as a verification task rather than an assumed feature.
