No. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is a single-player role-playing game. Square Enix’s official specification gives it a player count of “プレイ人数 1人” (one player), and the Xbox listing classifies it as “Single player.” The released versions represented by those listings do not support local couch co-op, online multiplayer, or two people controlling different characters in the same campaign.
What the official player count means
The one-player specification describes how the game is designed to be played: one person controls the adventure, party and story progression. It is not a menu setting that can be expanded by connecting another controller, signing in a second profile or inviting someone online.

Square Enix presents the game as an individual journey, using the wording “Embark on an adventure all your own.” The eight travelers are characters who belong to that one campaign. They are not eight player slots, eight independent save files in a shared world, or eight co-op avatars for a group of friends.
You can build a party from the travelers and experience their stories in one playthrough, but control remains with the single player. A second person cannot select one traveler and take over that character while the first person controls another.
#1 Best Overall
- Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills.
- The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights.
- The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish. You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night.
- Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more. Where will you go? What will you do? Every path is yours to take.
- Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating. New mechanics have also been added.
Does Octopath Traveler II have local co-op?
Shared-screen or couch play
There is no supported local multiplayer mode. Putting the game on a television, using a console with two controllers, or passing a controller between two people does not create a two-player session. The game continues to treat the save, party and decisions as belonging to one player.
Two controllers on one console
A second controller can be connected to a Switch, PlayStation or Xbox for other system functions, but the official one-player designation means it is not an additional game input. The same applies to a second user profile: creating another profile does not add a co-op participant to an existing campaign.
Taking turns
Friends can of course agree to take turns making decisions, reading dialogue or handling battles, but that is informal pass-the-controller play rather than a feature supported by the software. Only one person is registered as the active player at a time, and the game does not track separate co-op progress.

No supported online multiplayer mode is listed for the game. There is no official online party, invite system or shared campaign in which another player joins from a different console or PC. A Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, Xbox network or Steam connection cannot turn the single-player campaign into an online co-op session.

This also means there is no online matchmaking, no player-versus-player mode and no cross-platform co-op. The game’s platform availability does not change its player model: each platform runs a one-player RPG rather than a networked version with different multiplayer rules.
Platform-by-platform player status
Square Enix lists the title across the major platforms below. The available platform does not add a second player slot.
| Platform | Officially indicated mode | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | One player | No supported local or online co-op; a second controller cannot control another traveler. |
| PlayStation | One player | The console version is a solo campaign, not a split-screen or online party game. |
| Xbox | Single player | Xbox’s listing explicitly labels the game “Single player.” |
| PC/Steam | One player | The PC release is intended for one person at a time and has no official shared campaign mode. |
These labels describe the released versions covered by the cited official listings. If a future platform update or separate product ever adds a mode, its own specification would need to state that explicitly; the current listings do not.
Why eight travelers do not mean eight players
The title’s central premise can make the player count confusing. The adventure features eight travelers, each with a role in the world and a personal story. That number refers to the characters available within one player’s party and narrative, not to the number of humans who can join.

- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
One campaign, one controller
The party is assembled and directed by the person playing. Recruiting or bringing another traveler into the active group does not hand that character to another human. The same player chooses movement, conversations, exploration and combat actions for the party.
Separate stories are still part of one save
Because the travelers have individual storylines, two people may assume that each person could follow a different storyline simultaneously. The game does not work that way. Story selection and progress are managed inside one player’s save, so the narratives do not become separate co-op campaigns.
Party size is not a network capacity
RPGs often use the word “party” for a group of fictional characters. In this game, party members are controlled by the same player. A party of several travelers therefore says nothing about how many people can connect.

Do physical editions or bundles include multiplayer?
Square Enix Store lists a physical standard edition and a collector’s goods bundle that includes the physical game. Those are different purchase packages, not different gameplay editions. Buying the bundle does not unlock an extra player, a second campaign or online features.

If you are choosing between the editions, make the decision based on the included physical goods and your preferred format. The player count remains one for the game itself, regardless of which package you purchase or which supported platform you use.
What to check before buying or installing
Use the following checks if multiplayer is a deciding factor for your household or gaming group:
- Read the platform listing’s player field. Look for “1 player” or “Single player,” rather than assuming that a party-based RPG supports co-op.
- Check for a multiplayer menu. A genuine co-op release normally identifies local, online or both modes in its feature list. The official descriptions for this title do not list such a mode.
- Confirm the control model. If the game description discusses travelers as party members but never assigns them to separate users, they are fictional characters under one player’s control.
- Do not treat a second account as a second player. Additional console profiles, controllers or online subscriptions cannot add a mode that the software does not provide.
- Choose the right purchase package. The standard physical edition and collector’s bundle contain the same single-player game; the bundle is not a co-op version.
How to decide if it fits a shared-play request
If you are selecting an RPG specifically for two people, compare the features below rather than relying on the number of heroes shown in screenshots or the word “party” in a description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Question to ask | Why it matters | Octopath Traveler II |
|---|---|---|
| Is play local, online or both? | Local play keeps everyone on one screen; online play lets players join from separate systems. | Not supported in the official player listings. |
| How many people act at the same time? | Some games allow two simultaneous controllers, while others only offer turn-taking. | One player. |
| Do both players share one campaign? | A true co-op story records progress for both participants rather than only one account. | One player owns and advances the campaign. |
| Is cross-play available? | Cross-play determines whether people on different platforms can join each other. | No multiplayer mode is listed, so there is no cross-play feature to use. |
For a group that wants to discuss choices or alternate turns, the game can still be a social single-player experience. For a group that needs each person to control a character, share combat input or progress through one online save, it does not meet that requirement.

Common questions and misconceptions
Can two people control different travelers?
No. The travelers are all part of one player-controlled party. The official player count does not provide a character assignment system for two humans.
Is the Switch version two-player?
No. The Switch release remains a one-player game. Docked play, handheld play and additional Joy-Con or Pro Controller hardware do not change that designation.
Can I play the story online with a friend?
No supported online story mode is listed. A friend cannot join your save remotely or continue the campaign from another platform.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

No. Separate copies on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox or PC do not create a network session. Each copy is used by one player on its chosen platform.
Could the eight travelers be used as a local multiplayer roster?
No. Their number describes the fictional cast and party structure. It is not a roster of selectable human-controlled slots.
Bottom line for buyers
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is suitable when one person wants a party-based RPG with several travelers and interconnected stories. It is not suitable when the purchase depends on couch co-op, online co-op, split control of characters or a shared multiplayer campaign. The official one-player specification and Xbox’s “Single player” label apply across the listed versions, while the physical editions change packaging rather than gameplay.
