A forward enterprise-value-to-EBITDA multiple is not an appropriate standard valuation measure for Nuveen Mortgage and Income Fund (NYSE: JLS). JLS is a diversified closed-end investment company, not an operating business whose value is ordinarily assessed against operating EBITDA. The available official filings do not establish a validated forward EV/EBITDA figure for the fund. “BOATS” is also unexplained by the sources available; the SEC identifies the fund’s common shares as trading on the NYSE under JLS.
Why forward EV/EBITDA does not fit JLS
EV/EBITDA compares an operating company’s enterprise value with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. JLS is a pooled investment vehicle that holds securities and uses leverage. Its stated objective is to generate high current income through opportunistic investments in securitized credit, rather than to operate a business measured by EBITDA. Nuveen describes the fund’s objective on its JLS fund page.
For an investment fund, assets, liabilities, leverage, net asset value (NAV), market price relative to NAV, distributions, expenses, portfolio credit composition and total return provide more relevant analytical context. A displayed forward EV/EBITDA value may reflect a data service’s own classification or formula; the reviewed official filings neither disclose nor validate such a statistic. Before relying on a vendor’s number, identify its source and methodology.
What the ticker and “BOATS” label mean
The SEC registration statement identifies the common shares as listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol JLS. It describes Nuveen Mortgage and Income Fund as a diversified closed-end management investment company. The available official sources do not explain the “BOATS” prefix in the title, so it should not be treated as part of the verified exchange ticker.

More useful measures for evaluating the fund
Consider fund-specific measures and compare them on consistent dates and definitions:
- Market price versus NAV: Check whether shares trade at a premium or discount to the value of the fund’s net assets.
- Total returns: Compare NAV and market-price total returns over matching periods, rather than looking only at income distributions or share-price changes.
- Distribution sources: Review the fund’s distribution policy and reports that identify whether payments include income, realized gains or return of capital.
- Leverage: Assess the amount, cost and form of leverage, as it affects risk and results for common shareholders.
- Expenses and portfolio risk: Examine expenses alongside the portfolio’s credit composition and exposure.
Nuveen says that under normal circumstances the fund invests at least 80% of Assets in mortgage-related and other income-producing securities. It also describes a policy of investing at least 50% of Managed Assets in mortgage-backed securities (MBS), with up to 50% in non-mortgage-related asset-backed securities (ABS). These are policy descriptions, not a snapshot of current holdings. The fund’s registration statement says leverage may come from borrowings, debt securities, preferred shares, and certain derivatives or other financing instruments.

Understand distributions before judging income
In its semi-annual shareholder report for the period ended June 30, 2026, the fund said common-share distributions are intended to be regular monthly cash distributions, subject to change by the Board. A distribution can include realized gains or return of capital. The report cautions that when a distribution includes return of capital, NAV per share may erode; distributions that exceed the fund’s returns can reduce NAV per share.

How to assess a data service’s EV/EBITDA figure
- Confirm the instrument. Check that the data page refers to Nuveen Mortgage and Income Fund’s NYSE-listed common shares, ticker JLS.
- Identify the provider and formula. Determine how the service calculates enterprise value and what it treats as forward EBITDA. The official sources cited here do not provide or validate that calculation.
- Do not treat the output as a standard comparable-company multiple. JLS is a closed-end fund, and its portfolio, NAV and leverage call for fund-specific analysis.
- Use matching dates and definitions for comparisons. When comparing closed-end funds, align the measurement dates and methods for premium or discount to NAV, returns, distributions, leverage, expenses and portfolio credit mix.
No specific peer comparison or verified forward EV/EBITDA value is established by the official sources cited here.
