Short answer: The Orbi 770 is a mesh router system, not a modem. It must connect to an existing ISP modem, gateway, or equivalent fiber handoff. Its satellites normally communicate with the router over wireless Enhanced Backhaul, so Ethernet backhaul is optional. You do not need a subscription for ordinary routing, Wi-Fi, or mesh operation; NETGEAR Armor is an optional security service with a 30-day trial listed for the RBE773 before a paid subscription is required.

What the Orbi 770 is—and what it is not

The Orbi 770 combines a router and one or more mesh satellites to distribute a single Wi-Fi network around a home. It does not convert the signal from your internet provider into the Ethernet connection that a router needs. That conversion is performed by a modem or gateway supplied by your ISP or purchased separately.

NETGEAR’s own mesh guidance says a cable or DSL modem converts the ISP signal into Ethernet. The RBE770 also requires a high-speed internet connection to an existing modem or gateway. In practical terms, the Orbi router sits downstream from that device:

Cable and DSL service

With cable service, connect the coaxial line to the cable modem, then run Ethernet from the modem or gateway to the Orbi router’s WAN port. DSL service follows the same principle: the DSL modem or gateway receives the provider’s line and presents Ethernet to Orbi.

Fiber service

Fiber installations generally include an optical network terminal (ONT) or an ISP gateway that presents an Ethernet handoff. That upstream device is still required; the Orbi 770 cannot connect directly to the raw fiber signal. Follow your provider’s instructions for whether the ONT is paired with a separate gateway or router.

Can the ISP gateway remain in use?

Yes, the Orbi is designed to connect to an existing modem or gateway. The exact operating mode and any settings required on the ISP device vary by provider, so use the gateway’s documentation or ISP support instructions. The important physical arrangement is that the Orbi router receives Ethernet from the upstream device rather than the provider line itself.

Does Orbi 770 need Ethernet backhaul?

No. Wireless backhaul is the normal arrangement. Each satellite can automatically connect wirelessly to the Orbi router or to another Orbi satellite, creating the mesh link used to carry traffic between rooms. The Orbi 770’s Enhanced Backhaul uses Multi-Link Operation (MLO) across 5 GHz and 6 GHz links, according to NETGEAR’s product information.

Ethernet backhaul is an alternative, not a prerequisite. You add it when a cable can provide a more dependable path than the wireless link between a satellite and the rest of the mesh.

Wireless versus wired backhaul

Backhaul type How satellites connect Best fit What you need
Wireless Enhanced Backhaul Satellite links to the router or another satellite over the built-in 5 GHz and 6 GHz MLO connection. Most homes where satellites can be placed within a strong wireless range. Power for each satellite; no Ethernet run.
Wired Ethernet backhaul Satellite connects by Ethernet to the Orbi router or to another satellite through an appropriate switch. Thick walls, multiple floors, long distances, detached areas, basements, or heavy radio interference. Installed Ethernet cabling and a router or switch port rated at 1 Gbps or faster.

When wireless backhaul is enough

Use the default wireless arrangement when the satellites are inside the same building and can be placed where they still receive a strong link from the router or another satellite. It is the simplest installation because there is no cable to route and no switch to configure. Good placement matters: a satellite hidden at the far edge of coverage may have a weak connection even if the room where it serves clients has a strong signal.

When to choose Ethernet

Run Ethernet when building materials, floor separation, distance, or interference weaken the wireless link. A detached office, a basement separated by concrete or masonry, or a satellite several rooms away can benefit from a direct cable. Wired backhaul also avoids using the wireless path between nodes for mesh traffic, leaving the radio link available for client devices.

Star and daisy-chain layouts

NETGEAR documents both layouts. In a star layout, each satellite has an Ethernet run back to the Orbi router or to a central switch. In a daisy chain, one satellite’s Ethernet path continues through another satellite. The switch ports used for backhaul should be 1 Gbps or faster. Install the latest Orbi firmware before configuring wired backhaul, as NETGEAR directs in its support documentation.

Can a 2.5Gb switch connect the satellites?

Yes. A 2.5Gb Ethernet switch meets the documented 1 Gbps-or-faster requirement and can be used between the Orbi router and wired satellites. The Orbi 770’s Ethernet ports support links of up to 2.5 Gbps. The actual transfer rate is negotiated by the slowest component in each path, so a 2.5Gb switch cannot make a 1Gbps satellite port, cable, modem, or client operate above 1 Gbps.

Does the Orbi 770 require a monthly subscription?

No subscription is required for the basic functions: routing, Wi-Fi access, mesh coordination, and internet sharing continue without NETGEAR Armor. Armor is an optional security and privacy service rather than a license for the hardware.

What Armor adds

NETGEAR describes Armor, powered by Bitdefender, as providing enhanced security and privacy features such as threat prevention and VPN capabilities for connected devices and personal data. These features are separate from the Orbi system’s core networking functions.

How speed and coverage claims should be interpreted

NETGEAR lists a maximum advertised wireless speed of up to 11 Gbps for the RBE773 product page. That is a maximum aggregate wireless figure, not a promise that one phone, laptop, or speed-test server will receive 11 Gbps. NETGEAR does not publish an independent test in the cited product material proving that every home will achieve that throughput.

NETGEAR also lists up to 2,750 square feet per RBE770 satellite. Coverage varies with walls, floors, building materials, interference, satellite placement, client radios, and network traffic. The figure should therefore be used for planning rather than treated as a guaranteed indoor boundary.

The entire connection chain sets the ceiling

For gigabit or multi-gigabit internet, the RBE773 product information says a compatible cable modem is required. The internet plan, modem or gateway, Ethernet cable, Orbi port, switch, and client device all need to support the target rate. A single 1Gbps component limits that segment even when the Orbi system and ISP plan are faster.

Orbi 770 setup: a practical sequence

  1. Confirm the upstream equipment. Make sure your service includes a working cable or DSL modem, ISP gateway, or fiber ONT/gateway that provides Ethernet. Verify that the modem or gateway is compatible with your service tier.
  2. Connect the router. Run Ethernet from a LAN port on the modem or gateway to the Orbi router’s WAN/internet port. Power the upstream device and Orbi router, then allow them to finish starting.
  3. Place the satellites. Put satellites between the router and the areas that need coverage, rather than at the extreme edge of the existing signal. Keep them clear of unusually dense obstructions where possible.
  4. Start with wireless backhaul. Power each satellite and allow it to establish its automatic wireless connection. This is the default configuration and requires no Ethernet cable between nodes.
  5. Update firmware before wiring nodes. NETGEAR’s support instructions call for current Orbi firmware before configuring Ethernet backhaul. Complete that update while the system is operating normally.
  6. Add wired backhaul if needed. Connect a satellite by Ethernet to the Orbi router or to an appropriate switch. For a star layout, home-run each cable to the router or switch; for a daisy chain, follow the supported satellite-to-satellite arrangement.
  7. Check link speeds. Use 1Gbps-or-faster switch ports for backhaul. If you expect more than 1 Gbps, confirm that the Orbi port, switch, cable, modem, service plan, and client device all support 2.5Gbps operation.
  8. Decide on Armor separately. Finish basic connectivity first. Only activate the optional Armor trial if its security and privacy features justify a subscription after the trial period.

What is included with the three-pack?

NETGEAR lists the RBE773 three-pack contents as one Orbi router, two satellites, power adapters, a quick-start guide, and an Ethernet cable. Additional Ethernet runs or a switch for wired backhaul are not implied by that contents list.

Choosing the right arrangement

Your situation Recommended arrangement Reason
Standard home, satellites within good wireless range Existing modem or gateway plus wireless Enhanced Backhaul Uses the system’s normal configuration without new cabling.
Concrete walls, several floors, or strong interference Existing modem or gateway plus Ethernet backhaul where practical A cable avoids a weakened inter-node wireless path.
Detached room or building Ethernet backhaul if a suitable cable connection exists Distance and intervening structures can reduce wireless reliability.
Multi-gigabit service Compatible modem, Orbi 2.5Gbps path, suitable switch and cable The slowest device in the chain determines throughput.
Lowest ongoing cost Use core Orbi networking without Armor Routing, Wi-Fi, and mesh features do not require a subscription.

Troubleshooting common questions

The Orbi powers on but has no internet

  • Check that the ISP modem, gateway, or fiber handoff is online before testing Orbi.
  • Verify the Ethernet cable runs from the upstream device to the Orbi router’s WAN/internet port.
  • Confirm that the upstream equipment and service plan support the connection speed you purchased.

A satellite is offline or slow

  • Move it closer to the router or another satellite and test the wireless link again.
  • Look for thick walls, floors, metal structures, or interference between nodes.
  • If placement cannot solve the problem, install Ethernet backhaul using a 1Gbps-or-faster port.

Wired backhaul does not appear to work

  • Update Orbi firmware before troubleshooting the cable path.
  • Test the Ethernet cable and verify that every switch port in the path is enabled and rated at least 1 Gbps.
  • Check that the wiring follows a supported star or daisy-chain layout rather than an unintended loop.

A speed test is below the advertised maximum

  • Compare the result with the ISP plan’s provisioned speed rather than the 11Gbps aggregate wireless maximum.
  • Check the modem, cable, switch, Orbi port, and client device for 1Gbps limitations.
  • Retest near the router and then near a satellite; building materials, radio interference, and traffic can produce different results.

An Armor payment prompt appears

That prompt concerns the optional security service, not basic Orbi connectivity. You can continue using routing and Wi-Fi without subscribing; the RBE773 specifications identify the 30-day period as a trial before paid Armor service.
