Usually, there is no universal monthly fee just to use a NETGEAR router. NETGEAR does charge for some optional services, including Armor and Smart Parental Controls Premium. Your internet plan and any rental fee for ISP equipment are separate charges set by your internet provider.
What can you be charged for?
| Charge | Who charges it? | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Router purchase | Retailer or seller | The physical router. Buying it does not pay for internet service or automatically include every optional feature. |
| Internet plan | Your internet service provider (ISP) | Internet access to your home. This is separate from NETGEAR router ownership. |
| Equipment rental | Your ISP, if applicable | Equipment rented from the provider. Whether this appears on your bill depends on your provider and offer. |
| Optional NETGEAR subscription | NETGEAR | Specific services such as Armor or Smart Parental Controls Premium, subject to model and regional availability. |
NETGEAR’s terms say it offers “certain products and services on a subscription basis.” That describes subscription services, not a requirement to subscribe for every router. The official documentation cited here does not state one universal router-use fee.
Which NETGEAR services have a fee?
Smart Parental Controls
NETGEAR documents a free tier and a Premium tier. The free tier lets you pause internet access across devices and assign devices to children. Premium adds usage tracking, website history, content filtering, time limits, bedtimes, rewards, automatic breaks, and the My Time companion app.
NETGEAR Support listed Premium at $7.99 per month or $69.99 per year, with a 30-day free trial in an article last updated July 7, 2025. Treat those as the support page’s listed prices, not a guaranteed checkout price for every country or date. See NETGEAR Smart Parental Controls.

Circle documentation
NETGEAR support documentation describes Circle Basic as free and Circle Premium at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. The documentation also says Circle Go and supporting services were discontinued on December 31, 2020. Because this may be legacy or model-specific information, do not assume Circle is available for a particular router; check the exact model and current service status. Read NETGEAR’s Circle plan information.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to check whether a fee applies to your setup
- Identify the charge. A NETGEAR subscription is different from the ISP’s internet bill or a provider equipment-rental charge.
- Check your router model and country. Service eligibility and availability vary by model and location. Use NETGEAR’s exact-model support information before assuming a feature or subscription is offered for your device. NETGEAR Armor details.
- Review the service’s current terms. For Armor, check the Orbi or Nighthawk app for local pricing. For Smart Parental Controls, verify the price and trial terms at checkout rather than relying on a listed support-page price alone.
- Inspect your ISP bill and plan. Confirm what you pay for internet access and whether your provider charges you to rent equipment. Those terms come from your ISP, not from a universal NETGEAR router fee. NETGEAR’s Spectrum example applies to that provider’s offer only; it should not be generalized to other ISPs. What to expect if you buy a NETGEAR router
Buying a router is separate from paying an ISP for internet access. A subscription may be relevant if you choose a supported paid service, but a router purchase alone does not establish that a recurring NETGEAR charge applies. Nor does owning a router remove any internet-plan or equipment fees your ISP charges. Check the exact router, desired features, and local terms before purchasing or starting a trial.
