Some webcams have built-in microphones and some do not. Check the specifications for your exact model, then look for its microphone in your computer’s audio input settings and make a short recording test. If no input appears, check connection, permissions and device status before deciding the webcam lacks a mic.
Check whether your exact webcam model includes a microphone
Video capability does not guarantee audio capability. Find the webcam’s brand and model on its housing, packaging, purchase record or connected-device list. Then open the manufacturer’s official specifications and search for “microphone,” “built-in mic” or “audio.” A listed microphone confirms the hardware feature; a missing or unclear listing is not proof that every version of the product has the same feature.
For example, Logitech’s BRIO specifications describe dual omni-directional built-in microphones with a range up to 1.2 m. Logitech’s BRIO 1080p specifications also list a built-in microphone. These are model-specific details, not a rule for webcams generally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSee whether your computer detects the webcam microphone
After connecting the webcam, open your operating system’s sound or audio input settings. Look for an input bearing the webcam’s name or a related microphone/audio-device name. A microphone listed there means the computer recognizes an input device; it does not by itself confirm that an app is using it or that it is recording successfully.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Hardware specifications and software detection answer different questions. If the manufacturer lists a microphone but no corresponding input appears, troubleshoot detection and configuration before concluding that the mic is absent.
Make a short recording with the webcam mic selected
- Connect the webcam using its intended cable or adapter and confirm that the computer detects it.
- Open system sound/input settings or the audio settings in your calling or recording app.
- Select the webcam-associated microphone as the input. Do not assume it is selected automatically.
- Record a brief sample, then play it back and listen for your voice.
Logitech’s microphone troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the selected recording device and making a test recording.

If the webcam microphone does not appear or record
- Check the connection: Reconnect the webcam and try a known-good USB port. If you use an adapter, check that it is intended for the connection.
- Check app and system input selection: The webcam mic may be available but not selected as the active recording device.
- Review microphone privacy access: In Windows, privacy settings can restrict microphone access for apps and features. Microsoft explains these controls in its camera and microphone permissions guidance. The exact controls and labels can vary by Windows version.
- Inspect device and driver status: Check whether the webcam is detected and whether its audio device has an error or needs attention. Logitech’s troubleshooting article covers detection and device/driver checks, although some illustrated Windows navigation is for older versions and may not match current menus.
Only return to the model specifications after these checks. If the manufacturer does not document a microphone for the exact model, it may not include one; use a separate microphone if you need audio input.
Microphone presence is not the same as microphone performance
A built-in mic’s pickup pattern, stated range and the room around you affect how useful it is. Logitech lists the BRIO’s dual omni-directional microphones with a range up to 1.2 m, but that figure is a manufacturer specification for that model, not a guarantee of clear speech in every room. If choosing a webcam, check its published microphone details and consider your speaking distance and background noise. Test it in the conferencing software you actually use.
