Not reliably in the study available so far. Jiayi Chen and Guiling Wang report that adding test-time reasoning did not produce a reliable improvement in net portfolio returns across the DeepSeek, GPT and Gemini model families they tested. That is a result about one controlled, one-year U.S. equity experiment—not proof that reasoning effort can never help in other markets, periods or trading systems.
What “pay” means in this study
Here, “pay” is an economic question: does extra inference work change a model’s output in a way that improves a portfolio after the experiment’s trading costs? A longer rationale, a higher prediction score or a more convincing explanation is not by itself evidence of a better investment outcome. The relevant measure is the resulting net portfolio return.
That distinction matters because reasoning effort is an intervention with potential costs as well as benefits. A useful comparison asks whether the portfolio improvement, if any, is large and consistent enough to justify the additional inference work.

Their paper, The Price of Thought: Does Test-Time Reasoning Pay in LLM Trading?, was posted to arXiv on September 25, 2026. It compares representative models from the DeepSeek, GPT and Gemini families while varying reasoning effort. The authors say they held the information available at each portfolio formation date, prompts, output formats and portfolio construction fixed, so the comparison focuses on the effect of changing reasoning effort within that setup.

The evaluation covers one year of U.S. equities and three input conditions: numerical information, identifiable news and masked news. The authors report more than 800,000 asset predictions and repeated model generations. Their abstract’s conclusion is: “Across all three model families, additional reasoning does not produce a reliable improvement in net portfolio returns.”
The result was not a simple effort-to-return curve
For DeepSeek, moving from no reasoning to maximum reasoning produced nonmonotonic results: more effort did not correspond to a steady improvement. Repeated generations also yielded unstable treatment effects and portfolio selections, even when overall scores were similar. That makes both consistency across runs and the actual assets selected important parts of the result—not details that can be inferred from a single favorable generation.

What the finding does—and does not—establish
The reported result is bounded by the paper’s tested model families, one-year U.S. equity setting, input conditions and portfolio process. It does not settle whether test-time reasoning helps in other markets, periods, model versions, trading frequencies or agent designs. Nor does it establish that reasoning has no value for financial tasks other than portfolio returns.

Without those details, readers cannot quantify the size of any return differences or independently assess their uncertainty from the abstract alone. The paper’s stated conclusion is about a reliable improvement, not a claim that every run or condition produced identical outcomes.

Why financial benchmarks can answer different questions
Performance on a financial knowledge or reasoning benchmark is not interchangeable with evidence that an executable portfolio earns more after costs. The benchmarks below examine different parts of the problem.

How to judge a claim that reasoning is worth the cost
A credible evaluation should make the target outcome and test conditions explicit, rather than treating “reasoning quality” as a stand-in for investment performance.

- Net portfolio outcomes: Compare returns after the experiment’s specified trading costs, not just raw forecasts or model-level scores.
- Inference cost: Measure additional reasoning work alongside any portfolio change; a gain is economically useful only in relation to what it costs to produce.
- Repeatability: Run repeated generations and examine both the treatment effect and the resulting portfolio selections. Similar aggregate scores can conceal materially different choices.
- Information timing: State what information was available at each portfolio formation date and how the experiment prevents later information from entering earlier decisions.
- Task definition: Separate financial fundamentals, trading signals, quantitative reasoning, strategy coding and trade execution. Evidence on one task does not automatically transfer to another.
Chen and Wang’s controlled comparison addresses several of these dimensions by holding key inputs and portfolio elements fixed and using repeated generations. Its reported answer is nevertheless specific: in that tested setup, more reasoning did not reliably buy higher net portfolio returns.
