Modern Warfare 4’s story Campaign is presented as single-player, and the official materials available on October 18, 2026 do not announce either split-screen or online Campaign co-op. Two people can share a screen in Multiplayer on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. For an online squad experience, DMZ supports solo or squad deployment, but DMZ is an extraction mode rather than the story Campaign.

What the official descriptions say
The clearest description of the story is from Xbox Wire, which called it “the next epic single-player Call of Duty campaign” in its May 28, 2026 coverage. “Single-player” is the relevant distinction: it describes the Campaign as a solo experience rather than a two-person or squad-based story.

Activision also describes DMZ as playable solo or with a squad. That supplies an online way to deploy with friends, but it does not turn the narrative Campaign into co-op. These are three different offerings that should not be treated as interchangeable.

“Not announced” is more precise than saying a feature can never be added. The available statements establish what Activision and Xbox Wire had announced by October 18, 2026; a post-launch update could change the feature set. Until an official update says otherwise, plan around the announced modes.
Can two people play Modern Warfare 4 on the same console?
Yes, if you are playing Multiplayer on an Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. The confirmed arrangement is two players sharing one screen. The FAQ does not extend that statement to the Campaign, PC, or Nintendo Switch 2.
What this means when you start the game
- Choose the Multiplayer portion of the game rather than Campaign.
- Use an Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, the two platforms named in Activision’s split-screen statement.
- Connect or activate the second player’s controller and follow the Multiplayer lobby’s local-player prompt.

Can you play the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign in co-op online?
No official online Campaign co-op feature is announced in the cited materials. The Campaign is described as single-player, while the split-screen statement is explicitly about Multiplayer. That combination does not provide an official basis for expecting two people to progress through the story together over the internet.
This distinction matters because a game can offer online squad play in one mode while keeping its narrative missions solo. DMZ is the example here: its solo-or-squad description establishes cooperative-style deployment, not shared Campaign missions, story checkpoints, or co-op progression.

Players who mainly want to play with friends online have a confirmed alternative in DMZ. Activision says DMZ can be played solo or with a squad, so you can deploy alone or assemble an online group for that mode.

- Online group option: you can enter with a squad instead of playing alone.
- Choice of party size: solo deployment is also supported.
- A different type of session: DMZ is an extraction mode, so its objective and structure are separate from the scripted Campaign.
What DMZ does not establish
- It does not confirm two-player same-screen play.
- It does not confirm that Campaign missions can be launched with the squad.
- It does not establish the exact squad-size limit, cross-platform behavior, or progression rules in the cited statement.
If your priority is a shared narrative with a friend, DMZ should not be described as a substitute for Campaign co-op. If your priority is simply entering an online mode together, DMZ is the officially described squad-based option.

PlayStation 5
PlayStation 5 is explicitly named in Activision’s split-screen FAQ. The announced local arrangement is two-player Multiplayer on one screen. The same FAQ does not say that Campaign split-screen is available.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X|S is also explicitly named for two-player Multiplayer split-screen. The announcement covers both models in that family; it does not describe Campaign co-op.
PC
The cited materials do not establish split-screen support for PC. Do not assume that a console split-screen feature automatically appears in the PC version. An official PC-specific statement would be needed to confirm it.
Nintendo Switch 2
The cited Activision FAQ does not establish split-screen support for Nintendo Switch 2. Treat Switch 2 availability and local multiplayer behavior as unconfirmed unless Activision publishes a platform-specific update.

Launch timing and what access dates do—and do not—mean
Activision lists worldwide launch for October 23, 2026. Digital preorders receive Campaign Early Access beginning October 16, 2026, Pacific Time. Because October 18 falls inside that early-access window, some digital preorder customers may be able to start the solo Campaign before the worldwide launch date.
Early Access changes when an eligible buyer can enter the Campaign; it does not change the Campaign’s announced player model. Nothing in the cited timing information adds split-screen or online co-op to the story.
For physical buyers, Activision confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X editions through select retailers, with each including the full base game. The cited announcement does not state that a physical edition includes a second copy, a second account entitlement, or any additional co-op feature.

How to check for a post-launch change
Feature availability can change after release. If you are checking after October 23, use this process rather than relying on old launch articles or menu screenshots:
- Open Activision’s current Modern Warfare 4 support FAQ and look for a revised split-screen or Campaign-co-op entry.
- Check the game’s update notes for a specifically named Campaign co-op or Campaign split-screen feature. A generic stability patch is not confirmation.
- From the main menu, distinguish the Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ entries before testing a second controller or sending an invite.
- For local play, verify that the console is a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, the platforms named in the official split-screen statement.
- For online play, test the DMZ squad flow separately from Campaign matchmaking; success in DMZ does not demonstrate Campaign support.
If Activision later adds Campaign co-op, the support documentation should specify whether it is local, online, or both, along with platforms and player count. Until those details are published, retain the narrower launch interpretation.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“The game says multiplayer, so the story should work too.”
“Multiplayer” is the mode named in the split-screen announcement. Return to the mode selector and launch Multiplayer when you want two people on one console.
“My friend can join DMZ, so we can run the Campaign together.”
DMZ and Campaign are separate modes. Use DMZ for the announced solo-or-squad experience; do not expect its squad controls to appear in the story.

The FAQ names Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 only. PC support is not established by that statement, so wait for a PC-specific confirmation.
“Campaign Early Access must include co-op.”
Early Access is a timing benefit for digital preorders. It does not describe a new player mode or alter the single-player Campaign description.
