Yes, but not in the Java Edition sense. Minecraft Bedrock Edition has no native Java-style mod loader or plugin API. Its supported customization system is add-ons: behavior packs change game logic, while resource packs change visuals and audio. On a dedicated server, behavior packs are installed on the server and resource packs are normally downloaded by connecting players. Marketplace add-ons cannot be applied directly to a Bedrock Dedicated Server, although players may still use Marketplace resource packs on their own clients in some cases.
What “mods” means in Bedrock Edition
When players ask whether they can “put mods on Bedrock,” they usually mean one of three different things:
- Changing mobs, recipes, loot, items, spawning or other gameplay rules.
- Replacing textures, models, sounds or interface artwork.
- Adding Java-like server commands, economies, minigame frameworks or plugins.
Bedrock handles the first two through add-ons rather than Java mods. An add-on is a pack, or a combination of packs, that the Bedrock engine can load in a world. The third category requires separate community server software and is not part of Mojang’s add-on system.
There is no native Forge- or Fabric-style loader for Bedrock. A Java mod compiled for the Java Edition cannot simply be copied into a Bedrock world, and a Java server plugin will not run on the official Bedrock Dedicated Server.

Behavior packs and resource packs
| Pack type | What it changes | Where it runs | Who needs the files |
|---|---|---|---|
| Behavior pack | Entity behavior, AI, loot tables, spawn rules, items, recipes and trading data | As part of the world simulation; on a dedicated server, the server must load it | The server needs it. Players may also need compatible client assets supplied by a resource pack |
| Resource pack | Textures, models, sounds, particles, fonts and user-interface artwork | On each client that displays the content | Players download or import it. A server can offer a pack when they join |
A behavior pack can make a cow drop a custom item, add a recipe, alter a villager trade or change an entity’s behavior. A resource pack can give that item a new texture and model. Many complete add-ons therefore include both pack types: the behavior pack supplies the rules and the resource pack supplies what players see and hear.
Changing only a resource pack does not create new gameplay. Conversely, a behavior pack that references custom textures may appear broken if its matching resource pack is not available to the client.

Bedrock add-ons versus Java mods
| Capability | Bedrock Edition | Java Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Primary customization format | Behavior packs and resource packs | Mods loaded through third-party mod loaders, plus resource packs and data packs |
| Native mod-loader ecosystem | None for Java-style mods | Established loaders and loader-specific mods |
| Gameplay changes | Supported through behavior-pack data and scripts available to the pack | Can include extensive code-level changes, depending on the loader and mod |
| Server customization | Add-ons on the official server; community plugin software is separate | Modded servers and server plugins are widely used |
| Distribution | Pack files, world imports and the in-game Marketplace | Mod files, launchers, modpacks and server-side installations |
This distinction matters for compatibility. A Bedrock add-on must target Bedrock’s current pack format and APIs. A Java mod cannot be converted reliably by changing its file extension. Even two Bedrock add-ons may conflict if they alter the same entity, recipe, identifier or resource.
Installing an add-on in a Bedrock world
The exact menus vary slightly by platform, but the process is the same: import the pack, edit the world, and activate the required behavior and resource packs.

- Obtain a Bedrock-compatible pack. Use a pack that identifies its supported Bedrock version and includes a
manifest.json. A manifest supplies the pack’s UUID, version and modules. - Import the pack on your device. A client may recognize a
.mcpackor.mcaddonfile and offer an import action. If the download is a ZIP, extract it only when the publisher’s instructions require that; the folder containingmanifest.jsonis the pack folder. - Open the world settings. In Minecraft, select the world’s edit button, then open the Behavior Packs and Resource Packs sections.
- Activate the behavior pack. Move the behavior pack from Available to Active. If the add-on includes a resource pack, activate that as well.
- Read the dependency and experiment warnings. Some packs require experimental creator features or a particular game version. Enabling experiments can affect achievements and may make a world unsuitable for older clients.
- Test in a copy first. Duplicate an important world before enabling packs that alter terrain generation, entities or progression. Remove packs from the copy if the world fails to load, an entity disappears or recipes become unavailable.
Activation order matters when packs edit the same file. Bedrock uses pack priority: the higher-priority pack’s conflicting definition wins. Put an intentional override above the pack it is meant to replace, and document that order for anyone else maintaining the world.
Installing add-ons on a Bedrock Dedicated Server
A dedicated server does not use the world-editing screen. You install the pack files on the server host and tell the target world which packs to load. Folder names can change between server releases, so confirm them against the documentation for the exact Bedrock Dedicated Server build you run. A guide verified against version 1.26.44.3 in September 2026 is useful as a reference, not a guarantee that every later release uses identical paths.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Stop the server and back up the world
Stop the process cleanly before copying files. Back up the entire world directory and, if possible, the server configuration. A behavior pack can change saved data; a rollback is safer than trying to remove partial changes while the server is running.
2. Unpack the behavior and resource packs
Place each pack as an ordinary folder in the server’s behavior-pack and resource-pack locations. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes top-level shared pack folders from folders inside a particular world. The Minecraft Wiki commonly documents development_behavior_packs and development_resource_packs for custom packs, while packaged server distributions may expose differently named directories. Do not leave a ZIP containing the pack as the only file unless your server version explicitly supports that format; the server must be able to read the folder and its manifest.json.

3. Check each manifest
Open every pack’s manifest.json and record the UUID and version for the pack module that the world should load. The UUID identifies the pack; the version is an array such as [1, 0, 0]. Use the values from the manifest rather than inventing new ones. If two folders contain the same UUID, correct the duplicate before continuing.
4. Reference the packs in the world
Inside the target world folder, create or edit world_behavior_packs.json and world_resource_packs.json. Each file lists the packs that world should load by UUID and version from their manifests. A minimal entry has this form:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems[
{
"pack_id": "xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx",
"version": [1, 0, 0]
}
]
Replace the example UUID and version with the real values. Keep valid JSON syntax: use commas between entries, double quotes around property names and no trailing comma after the last entry. A behavior pack belongs in the behavior file; a resource pack belongs in the resource file.
5. Choose shared or per-world scope
Top-level shared pack folders apply to every world that references those packs. This is convenient for a server running a common resource set, but it can create accidental dependencies when you switch worlds. Packs stored and referenced within one world’s directory load only when that world runs. Use per-world placement when different worlds need different add-ons, and shared placement only for content you intentionally want available across worlds.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Start, read the console and test
Restart the server and inspect the startup log for malformed JSON, missing manifests, dependency errors or pack-format warnings. Join with a test account, verify that the custom behavior occurs, and check that clients receive the required resource pack. Test in both a fresh test world and the production world if the pack changes generation or saved entities.
There is a shortcut documented by the Minecraft Wiki: activate the packs in a single-player world, export or import that world on the server, and let the game generate the two world JSON files. The pack files themselves still have to be present where the server can read them, and this method does not remove version or compatibility checks.
Can Marketplace add-ons run on a dedicated server?
Not directly. Marketplace packs are licensed and distributed for the Bedrock client ecosystem; the documented dedicated-server workflow expects pack files that can be placed on the server and referenced by manifest UUID and version. The Minecraft Wiki’s dedicated-server tutorial and a Mojang feedback thread both describe Marketplace packs as unavailable for direct application to the dedicated server.
Players may still use a Marketplace resource pack on their own client while joining a server, provided the server does not require a different texture pack. This is a client-side visual choice and does not add the Marketplace pack’s gameplay behavior to the server. If a server requires its own resource pack, that requirement can override or prevent a player’s preferred visual pack.

Do not assume that purchasing an add-on gives you a server-installable folder. Check whether the publisher supplies files intended for dedicated-server use and whether the license permits that deployment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What are Bedrock server plugins?
Plugin-style server software, such as the community project Endstone, is an unofficial layer separate from the official add-on system. These projects can expose APIs for commands, permissions, events or minigame logic that resemble Java server plugins. They may require replacing or wrapping the standard server executable, and their compatibility depends on both the software release and the Bedrock server version.
Use this route only when an add-on cannot provide the feature you need. Evaluate whether the project supports your operating system, server build, backup strategy and security requirements. A plugin framework does not make Java mods compatible with Bedrock, and installing one does not remove the need for resource packs when clients must see custom assets.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server ignores the pack
- Confirm that the pack folder directly contains
manifest.json, rather than another nested folder. - Check that the UUID and version in the world JSON exactly match the manifest.
- Verify that the JSON files are in the active world directory and use valid syntax.
- Confirm that the folder names match your server release; documentation for one build may not apply unchanged to another.
Players see missing textures or purple-and-black visuals
- Install and reference the matching resource pack.
- Confirm that the server is offering the resource pack and that clients accepted the download.
- Check that the behavior pack’s identifiers match the identifiers defined by the resource pack.
- Test without other resource packs to find a priority conflict.
The world loads but gameplay is unchanged
- Make sure the behavior pack, not just the resource pack, is active.
- Check whether the pack requires experimental features or a particular game version.
- Look for a higher-priority pack overriding the same entity, recipe or loot definition.
- Test the feature in a newly created world to distinguish a pack problem from old saved data.
A downloaded file is rejected
Community forum users have reported servers rejecting .mcpack, .mcaddon and .zip uploads in particular setups. Those reports are not official compatibility guarantees. If your server rejects an archive, extract it locally, verify the manifest, upload the folder to the pack directory and reference it through the world JSON. Always follow the file-format rules for your server version and hosting environment.
Which option should you choose?
| Your goal | Use | Installation responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Change recipes, mobs, loot, items or spawning on a server | Behavior pack, optionally paired with a resource pack | Server administrator installs and references it |
| Change textures, sounds or interface artwork only | Resource pack | Each client imports it, or the server offers it |
| Give one world a different content set | Per-world pack folders and JSON references | World administrator maintains that world’s files |
| Apply the same approved content to several worlds | Shared top-level pack folders, with explicit world references | Server administrator manages common dependencies |
| Add plugin-like commands or server APIs | Community server software such as Endstone | Administrator accepts third-party compatibility and security risks |
| Use a Marketplace pack’s gameplay on the dedicated server | Not supported through the official dedicated-server workflow | Look for a separately distributed, server-compatible pack instead |
Bottom line
Bedrock Edition supports substantial customization, but its native model is add-ons, not Java-style mods. Use behavior packs for server-side gameplay rules and resource packs for client-visible assets. On a dedicated server, install unpacked packs, copy the UUID and version from each manifest into the world’s two pack JSON files, and decide deliberately between shared and per-world scope. Marketplace content remains primarily client-side, while plugin frameworks such as Endstone are community alternatives rather than official Bedrock add-ons.
