No. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 is officially listed as “No. of players — Single system (1).” It is a one-player game on one console. Nintendo does not advertise local couch co-op, online multiplayer, or a second-player mode for this edition, and GameShare should not be treated as a way to add one.

The direct answer: it is single-player

Nintendo’s product metadata answers the multiplayer question directly: “No. of players — Single system (1).” That label applies to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. In practical terms, one person can play the game on the console at a time. The listing does not identify a local multiplayer option, couch co-op campaign, online multiplayer mode, or an additional player slot.

The official UK Nintendo listing gives the same result with the wording “Players — Single System (1).” Because both listings agree, there is no indication that the Switch 2 edition has a regional multiplayer feature that is missing elsewhere. If two people are deciding whether they can play this game together on one Switch 2, the official answer is no.

What “Single system (1)” means

“Single system (1)” is Nintendo’s player-count field for the software. The number one identifies the supported player count on that console, not the number of controllers that can be paired. Connecting two Joy-Con controllers, two compatible controllers, or additional Switch 2 controllers does not change the software’s listed player count.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The label also distinguishes this game from software that explicitly lists multiple players, local wireless play, online play, or a combination of those modes. Nintendo’s listing supplies none of those additional player descriptions for the Encore Edition. The safest interpretation is therefore a one-player experience rather than a game that supports two people taking turns, controlling different characters, or joining the same session.

  • One console: supported player count is one.
  • Local couch co-op: not advertised by Nintendo’s listing.
  • Online multiplayer: not advertised by Nintendo’s listing.
  • Additional player mode: none is identified in the product metadata.

This does not mean another person cannot watch, discuss choices, or take over the controller informally. It means the game itself does not provide a supported second-player feature.

Which Switch version are you buying?

The Switch 2 release is called Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition. Nintendo describes it as exclusive to Switch 2 and says it includes a new set of outfits for Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot. Those additions are cosmetic content; Nintendo’s player metadata still lists the edition as one player.

The UK Nintendo page lists the release date as 05/11/2026. In the UK date format used on that page, this is 5 November 2026. That date identifies the UK listing’s release timing; it does not indicate a multiplayer launch feature.

There is also an earlier Nintendo Switch Cloud Version. Nintendo lists that version as “Single system (1)” as well and marks it as supported on Switch 2. Compatibility with the newer console should not be confused with a new multiplayer mode. The cloud version remains a one-player alternative, not a co-op edition.

Version Player count listed by Nintendo Platform information Multiplayer implication
Encore Edition Single system (1) Nintendo Switch 2; TV, tabletop and handheld modes One player; no local or online multiplayer mode is advertised
Earlier Switch Cloud Version Single system (1) Nintendo Switch Cloud Version; supported on Switch 2 Also one player; it is not a co-op alternative

The version distinction matters if a store page uses “Switch” broadly. Check that the product is the Switch 2 Encore Edition or the Cloud Version, then check the player field. In either case, the official count is one.

Does GameShare make it multiplayer?

No. Nintendo’s GameShare documentation describes GameShare as working with compatible software. Compatibility is a requirement for a particular title; GameShare is not a system-wide switch that turns every single-player game into a multiplayer game.

Because the Guardians of the Galaxy listing itself says “Single system (1),” it should not be presented as a GameShare co-op title. A second Switch 2, a second display, or a second controller cannot override the player count that the software exposes. Unless Nintendo specifically identifies this game as compatible with a multiplayer GameShare mode, there is no supported basis for using GameShare to add another player.

This is an important distinction when comparing games. A title can support GameShare only when its software has been designed and listed for that use. The presence of GameShare on the console does not, by itself, establish compatibility for Guardians of the Galaxy.

What you can and cannot do with two people

Two people on one Switch 2

Only one player is supported by the official listing. You can hand the controller to another person, but that is an informal change of player rather than a built-in co-op mode. The game does not list a second character slot or simultaneous two-player control.

Two controllers connected

Pairing extra controllers is not evidence of multiplayer support. Switch 2 hardware can accept multiple controllers for compatible software, while this title’s own metadata limits the game to one player. The software’s listing takes precedence over the number of controllers connected.

Two consoles or online accounts

The listing does not advertise online multiplayer or a mode that links two systems for a shared game. Owning two consoles, two copies, or two Nintendo accounts therefore does not create a supported online session for this title.

GameShare between systems

GameShare remains conditional on compatible software. Guardians of the Galaxy is listed as one player, so it should not be recommended as a GameShare multiplayer experience.

How to verify the player count before purchase

If a retailer’s description is vague or uses an abbreviated title, use Nintendo’s product information as the deciding reference. The following check avoids confusing the Encore Edition with another release or assuming that a Switch 2 feature applies automatically.

  1. Identify the edition. Confirm whether the page names Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition or the earlier Switch Cloud Version.
  2. Open the software details. Look for Nintendo’s “No. of players” or “Players” field rather than relying on screenshots, controller icons, or a general Switch 2 feature description.
  3. Read the value exactly. For the Encore Edition, Nintendo states “Single system (1).” The UK listing uses “Single System (1).”
  4. Check for explicit modes. A genuine multiplayer listing would normally identify local, wireless, online, or GameShare support. None is advertised for this game.
  5. Do not infer support from hardware features. Extra controllers and GameShare availability on Switch 2 do not alter a title’s own player-count metadata.

Why the Switch 2 edition can still be a solo purchase

The lack of multiplayer describes how the game is played; it does not make the Encore Edition unavailable on different Switch 2 configurations. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes for the Switch 2 release. Those are display and play-position options for the single player, not separate multiplayer modes.

A player can therefore choose a television, tabletop setup, or handheld use according to preference while still playing alone. The new outfits for Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot are part of the Encore Edition’s content distinction, but they do not change the one-player structure.

If your purchase decision depends on shared control, treat “single system (1)” as a decisive limitation. If your goal is simply to play the Guardians story on Switch 2, the player-count field does not prevent that solo use.

Common questions that cause confusion

Is “single system” the same as local multiplayer?

No. “Single system” identifies the console arrangement, and the number in parentheses identifies the player count. Here, “Single system (1)” means one player on one system, not several players sharing one console.

Does the word “Guardians” imply that several people control the team?

No. A game can feature a team of characters while still being designed for one player. The official player field, rather than the number of characters in the story, determines multiplayer support.

Could an update add co-op later?

Nintendo’s current listings provide no announcement of such an update. The documented status for the Switch 2 Encore Edition is one player. Any future feature would need to be announced and reflected in updated official software information before it could be treated as supported.

Is the Cloud Version a multiplayer workaround?

No. Nintendo also lists the earlier Switch Cloud Version as “Single system (1).” Its support on Switch 2 concerns platform compatibility, not an added co-op mode.

Bottom line for buyers

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition on Switch 2 is a single-player game. Nintendo’s exact metadata—“No. of players — Single system (1)”—rules out treating it as a local couch co-op or online multiplayer purchase. The earlier Cloud Version has the same one-player designation, and GameShare is conditional on software compatibility rather than a universal multiplayer conversion. Buy it for solo play, and choose a different title if simultaneous two-player action is essential.
