No. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe needs an internet connection to download and install a software update, but it does not require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for that update. Nintendo Switch Online is required when you use the game’s online features, such as racing over the internet.
The short answer
You can update Mario Kart 8 Deluxe without subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online. Connect your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console to the internet, select the game from the HOME Menu, open its software-update menu, and choose the internet option.
The paid membership and the internet connection serve different purposes. The connection transfers the update files. Nintendo Switch Online authorizes the game’s online features. Confusing those two requirements is why an update prompt can appear to be asking for a subscription when it is actually asking for internet access or a newer game version.

Nintendo’s multiplayer documentation distinguishes Multiplayer, Online Play, Wireless Play, and LAN Play. Its explicit membership requirement applies to Online Play; the other modes use their own local connection arrangements.

How to update Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Use Nintendo’s manual update path when the game reports that a newer version is required or when you want to check for an update yourself.
- Connect the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight Mario Kart 8 Deluxe without launching it.
- Press the + or − button to open the software options.
- Select Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
The console then checks for an available version and downloads it over the internet. The update process is separate from purchasing or activating Nintendo Switch Online. If the console is not connected, it cannot retrieve the update files, regardless of whether you have a membership.
What happens after the download
The game must finish installing the update before you start the version that needs it. When you play with other people in a supported multiplayer mode, the consoles need matching software versions. A player on an older version can therefore be asked to update before joining a session, even if the other players are ready and even if the player has Nintendo Switch Online.

An update notice generally means the software version on the console does not match the version required for the activity you selected. Nintendo states that an update is required for the game’s online features, and multiplayer participants need compatible versions to play together.
Online race or other internet feature
For Online Play, two separate checks apply: the game needs the current software version, and Nintendo Switch Online is required for the online feature itself. Updating the game does not provide the membership, and buying the membership does not download the update automatically.
Playing with someone nearby
Local Multiplayer, Wireless Play, and LAN Play are documented as different modes from Online Play. They do not use the same connection arrangement as an internet race. You still may need to update the game so the participating consoles run compatible versions, but the update requirement should not be interpreted as a Nintendo Switch Online requirement.
Internet access versus Nintendo Switch Online
Internet access
Internet access is the transport method for the update. The console contacts Nintendo’s update service, downloads the software package, and installs it. This requirement applies whether you own a physical game card or use a digital copy; the installed game software still has to obtain its update through the internet.

Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo describes the membership as necessary for the game’s online features. Its support wording is direct: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the game’s online features.” That statement addresses online use, not the act of downloading a software update.
As a result, a console can be in this state: the game is fully updated, but Online Play is unavailable until the account has the required membership. The reverse is also possible: an account can have Nintendo Switch Online, but the game cannot enter an activity that requires a newer version until the update is installed.
Booster Course Pass and Expansion Pack access
The Booster Course Pass adds another condition that can make the requirements look similar. Nintendo says the base game must be updated for the DLC. If access comes through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack rather than a separately owned copy of the pass, the game may need an internet connection when it launches to verify that the membership is still active.
If you own the Booster Course Pass separately
Keep Mario Kart 8 Deluxe updated so the DLC content is supported. The update download itself still does not require Nintendo Switch Online; it requires internet access.

The console may need to go online at launch for membership verification. That check concerns entitlement to the DLC, not the basic update mechanism. If the console is offline, the verification cannot occur, even though the game software may already contain the latest update.
Troubleshooting an update prompt
The console has no internet connection
Reconnect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet, then repeat the HOME Menu procedure: highlight the game, press + or −, choose Software Update, and choose Via the Internet. Without internet access, the console has no way to download the update.
You have Nintendo Switch Online but the prompt remains
Membership does not replace the software update. Run the manual update path and let the installation complete. The subscription becomes relevant when you select Online Play, not when you retrieve the update package.

You updated, but another player still cannot join
Check that every participating console has completed the same software update. Nintendo requires matching software versions for supported multiplayer sessions. A membership can be valid on one account while a different console remains on an older game version.
The Booster Course Pass is unavailable after updating
Determine how the pass was obtained. Separately purchased DLC and Expansion Pack access have different checks. Expansion Pack access may require the console to connect to the internet at launch so Nintendo can verify the membership. An update alone cannot complete that entitlement check.
You are choosing a local mode
Confirm which multiplayer option you selected. Nintendo lists Local Multiplayer, Wireless Play, LAN Play, and Online Play as distinct arrangements. An update prompt can apply to all players because their software versions must match, while only Online Play invokes the Nintendo Switch Online requirement described by Nintendo.

Updating before subscribing
This is supported: connect the console to the internet and install the update first. You can postpone Nintendo Switch Online until you actually want to use Online Play.
Updating a physical game card
Insert the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game card, highlight the game on the HOME Menu, and use the same Software Update and Via the Internet commands. The card supplies the game software, while the console’s internet connection supplies the update.

Local Multiplayer is separate from Online Play. Update the game so it is on the required version, then use the local mode supported by your setup. Nintendo Switch Online is not the step that downloads the update.
Racing friends over the internet
Install the current update first. Then, when you use Online Play, the account needs Nintendo Switch Online in addition to the internet connection. Both conditions serve different parts of the experience.
What you actually need
- For the update: a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console connected to the internet, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selected from the HOME Menu.
- For Online Play: the current game version, an internet connection, and Nintendo Switch Online.
- For local, wireless, or LAN sessions: the appropriate local connection arrangement and compatible software versions; Nintendo documents these separately from Online Play.
- For Expansion Pack access to the Booster Course Pass: an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and, when requested, an internet connection for verification.
Bottom line
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does not need Nintendo Switch Online to receive a software update. It needs internet access. Nintendo Switch Online becomes necessary when you use the game’s Online Play features, while local, wireless, and LAN modes follow their own connection arrangements. Keep every participating console on the same software version, and remember that Booster Course Pass access through Expansion Pack membership can require an additional online membership check at launch.
