Yes—Mac Dictation can work without an internet connection, but only when your Mac’s Dictation settings say that general-text Dictation is processed on the device. That same setting determines the main privacy boundary. On-device processing keeps audio and transcripts on the Mac; server-based Dictation sends what you say to Apple for recognition.
Do not infer the mode from the microphone icon or from whether words appear quickly. Open the Dictation panel and read its explanatory text before relying on offline operation or making a privacy-sensitive recording.
What “offline Dictation” means on a Mac
macOS has more than one speech feature, and the word “Dictation” can hide an important distinction. Standard Dictation converts speech into text in a text field such as a document, email, search box or message. Depending on the language, region and configuration, recognition can occur on the Mac or on Apple’s servers.
When the Keyboard settings identify general-text Dictation as on-device, Apple describes the processing as completely offline. The audio and transcript are handled on the Mac rather than sent to Siri servers. If the panel says an internet connection is required, or does not identify on-device processing, the speech is sent to Apple for server recognition.

Offline does not mean every speech feature on macOS is independent of network access. Availability and behavior vary by language and region, and Voice Control is a separate feature with its own operation. Treat the setting shown on your Mac as the authoritative answer for your current language and system configuration.
How to check whether your Mac is using on-device processing
Apple puts the relevant qualification directly in System Settings. Check it immediately after changing languages, enabling or disabling Voice Control, or setting up a new Mac.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Open Dictation.
- Read the explanatory text beneath the Dictation controls. Apple says this text tells you whether an internet connection is needed and whether voice inputs and transcripts for general-text Dictation are processed on the device and not sent to Siri servers.
- Note the wording for the language you intend to use. A language or region change can alter availability and processing requirements.
If the text explicitly says processing is on the device and does not require an internet connection, that is the strongest built-in indication that standard Dictation can run offline. If it specifies a connection, assume your speech will use Apple’s servers. A microphone indicator only shows that listening is active; it does not prove where recognition is occurring.

The second row reflects Apple’s privacy wording for Dictation: when on-device processing is not indicated, the things you dictate are sent to and processed on the server, but are not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. “Not stored” in that sentence applies to the dictated content itself; Apple separately describes request history and contextual data that can be retained under its Siri and Dictation policies.

What Apple may receive with a Dictation request
Server recognition is not limited to an isolated sound file. Apple says Siri and Dictation requests can include contextual information needed to interpret what you said. Examples include:
- Contact names and relationships.
- Names of installed apps.
- The name of your device.
- Names of Home accessories.
- Labels from Photos.
- Names of Reminders lists.
Apple says this information is associated with a random device-generated identifier rather than your Apple Account. The identifier rotates multiple times per hour, according to Apple’s privacy policy. Apple also says the contextual data is not used to build a marketing profile and is not sold.
That random identifier reduces direct account linkage, but it does not make a server request equivalent to local processing. If your work involves confidential names, project terms or other sensitive context, the only way to keep general-text Dictation off Apple’s servers is to use a configuration whose Keyboard panel explicitly states that processing is on the device.

How long can Dictation-related data be retained?
Retention depends on the type of data and your choices. Apple says request history can include transcripts and related request data. That history may be retained for up to two years to develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Search and limited other language-processing functionality.

Apple also says a small subset of requests may be reviewed and kept longer. The policy describes the review process as involving selected samples, not every interaction. These statements mean that server-based Dictation does not have a universal “nothing remains” guarantee.
Apple’s privacy feature information says audio recordings of Siri and Dictation interactions are not retained by default. You can opt in to storage and human review of audio for improvement. The default and the retention exception are separate decisions: declining audio-improvement sharing does not turn server recognition into on-device recognition.
Control the optional audio-sharing setting

- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security.
- Open Analytics & Improvements.
- Review Improve Siri & Dictation.
- Turn it off if you do not want to opt in to sharing audio recordings for improvement.
This control addresses optional sharing and review. It should not be confused with the Keyboard > Dictation message that determines whether recognition is on-device or server-based. Check both locations when configuring a privacy-sensitive Mac.

Privacy checklist for confidential dictation
- Verify the processing statement: confirm that Keyboard > Dictation explicitly says general-text Dictation is processed on the device and does not require an internet connection.
- Check after language changes: the available features and processing mode can vary by language and region.
- Review Improve Siri & Dictation: disable the option if you do not want to opt in to audio recording storage and review.
- Separate local security from transmission privacy: on-device recognition limits network transmission, but anyone with access to your unlocked Mac may still see dictated text.
- Use the right feature: standard Dictation and Voice Control are not interchangeable settings.
- Do not rely on the microphone icon: the icon indicates listening, not the location of speech recognition.
- Consider surrounding context: server requests can include names and other contextual information from the device.
Dictation, Voice Control and the 30-second behavior
Apple says standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on because Voice Control supplies the dictation function instead. If the Dictation control appears unavailable, check whether Voice Control is enabled before troubleshooting the network.
Apple also says Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without detected speech. That is an inactivity limit, not a maximum length for continuous speech: text can be dictated without a length timeout while you continue speaking. Plan pauses accordingly when recording notes, interviews or long passages.
These behaviors do not identify the privacy mode. Voice Control being active, a microphone icon being visible, or a long passage being accepted does not by itself show whether recognition is local. Return to the explanatory text in Keyboard > Dictation for that answer.

Language or region support
Apple does not make Dictation available in every language or region, and features vary. A language may support Dictation but not on-device processing, or may expose a different set of controls. If the panel requires the internet, that is a capability limitation for the selected configuration, not necessarily a fault with your Wi-Fi.

Voice Control enabled
Because Voice Control supplies its own dictation function, standard Dictation is unavailable while it is active. Decide which feature you need, then check its settings and privacy behavior separately.
Assuming a disconnected test is proof
Turning off Wi-Fi and watching whether text appears is a poor substitute for reading Apple’s setting. A cached connection, delayed recognition or a different speech feature can make the result misleading. Use the explicit processing statement first; treat a connectivity test only as a secondary check.
Changing system configuration after verification
Switching languages, regions or speech features can change the available processing path. Recheck the Dictation panel whenever you make one of those changes, especially before dictating confidential material.

If Apple’s built-in mode does not support your language or workflow, compare alternatives by data path rather than by a microphone shortcut or a claimed “AI” label. The following questions expose the differences that matter:

| Is offline mode explicit and enforced? | A product that merely works during a brief outage may still upload audio later. Look for a documented offline mode and its limits. |
| How long are audio files and transcripts retained? | Deletion schedules, backups and human review can create exposure after transcription finishes. |
| Is an account required, and what telemetry is collected? | Account identifiers, diagnostics and usage logs can add data beyond the dictated words. |
| Which languages are supported locally? | A tool may offer many cloud languages but only a smaller offline set. |
| How well does it integrate with your apps and editing workflow? | Privacy is not useful if you must export recordings to another service to correct or format the text. |
No accuracy statistic or independent privacy-risk measurement establishes a universal winner for Mac Dictation. Evaluate the exact language, app and mode you will use, and read the provider’s retention terms before sending sensitive speech to any service.
A practical decision rule
- Need the strongest privacy available from Apple’s built-in feature? Use general-text Dictation only after Keyboard > Dictation explicitly identifies on-device processing.
- Need a language or region that is not offered locally? Expect that the available mode may require Apple’s servers, and review Improve Siri & Dictation plus the broader request-history policy.
- Need hands-free commands as well as text entry? Check Voice Control separately; standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is enabled.
- Need to dictate sensitive material while the setting requires internet access? Avoid server-based Dictation for that material or choose a documented local alternative whose retention and telemetry terms meet your requirements.
Bottom line on offline operation and privacy
Mac Dictation is not automatically offline and is not automatically private. The decisive evidence is the explanatory text in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation. An on-device indication means Apple says audio and transcripts stay on the Mac for general-text Dictation. Without that indication, assume your words are sent to Apple for recognition, with contextual data and request-history rules applying even though Apple says dictated content is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri & Dictation.
