Sometimes—but only when the death benefit, together with the household’s other usable resources, covers the income support period and obligations the family has chosen to protect. A salary multiplied by a convenient rule of thumb cannot establish that by itself. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says, “Everyone’s needs are different.” The useful question is not “What multiple of income should I buy?” but “What would this household need, for how long, and what resources would remain after a death?”

What “enough” life insurance means

A policy is large enough when its death benefit can help the surviving household meet its stated needs without relying on assumptions the family would not accept. Those needs usually include some combination of:

  • Income support for dependents during a defined period
  • Mortgage and other debts the family wants paid
  • Final expenses
  • Childcare or replacement household services
  • Education funding
  • Ongoing household bills and other specific goals

The amount is household-specific. One family may need to replace most of a worker’s earnings for many years; another may need less because a spouse continues earning, children are nearly independent, or substantial savings are available. The death benefit is a source of funds, not a promise that every dollar of the insured person’s former salary will be reproduced indefinitely.

How to estimate a coverage gap

Use the following sequence to create an estimate that can be checked and updated. Write down each assumption, especially the income amount, support period and resources you plan to use.

1. Estimate the annual income support the household would need

Start with the amount dependents would actually need each year if the insured person died. Do not automatically copy gross salary. Some expenses tied to the worker may disappear, taxes may change, and another adult’s income may continue. Conversely, childcare, transportation, paid household help or health-related costs may rise.

State whether your figure is gross income, after-tax spending or a target annual household budget. A clear assumption is more useful than false precision. If the family wants the policy to replace only the insured person’s contribution to living costs, estimate that contribution rather than the entire paycheck.

2. Select a support period

Choose the number of years the benefit is intended to support the household. The period might run until children reach a planned independence milestone, a mortgage is expected to be repaid, or another obligation ends. There is no universal number of years in the NAIC guidance; the correct period depends on the family’s obligations and goals.

Consider each dependent separately. A child who is two may require support for substantially longer than a child who is seventeen. If a spouse’s retirement plan or another planned income source is part of the strategy, document when it is expected to begin and how reliable it is.

3. Add debts and one-time or special costs

After estimating income support, add the obligations the family wants the death benefit to address. The NAIC consumer guide identifies mortgage and other debts, final expenses, childcare, education and ongoing household expenses as relevant needs.

Need category What to decide
Mortgage and other debts Whether the family wants balances paid in full, reduced, or serviced through the support period
Final expenses The amount the household wants available for funeral, administrative and related costs
Childcare and household services Whether surviving family members would need paid care or replacement services
Education Which education goals are included and how much funding is intended
Ongoing bills Housing, food, utilities, insurance and other continuing expenses the family has selected

Do not add a category merely because it appears on a checklist. Include it when the family has a specific obligation or goal and an amount can be reasonably estimated.

4. Subtract insurance and resources the family would actually use

Inventory every resource that would be available after death and that the household is genuinely willing to use for this purpose. Include individual policies, employer-provided coverage, savings and other assets designated for the need. A calculator from INS. presents the DIME framework—debt, income replacement, mortgage and education—and notes that spouse income, savings and Social Security survivor benefits can affect a household’s actual need. Treat that calculator as an illustration, not as a regulator-endorsed formula or a personalized recommendation.

Be conservative about resources that are uncertain, restricted or needed for another purpose. A retirement account may have taxes, access rules or a competing purpose. A spouse’s future earnings may be important, but they should not be counted as guaranteed if employment, health or caregiving responsibilities make them uncertain.

5. Compare the estimate with current death benefits

Add the death benefits that would be available under existing policies, then compare that total with the needs estimate. The difference is the approximate coverage gap. Check the policy documents rather than relying on a payroll description or an old application.

Revisit the estimate whenever income, dependents, debt, housing, education plans or other major obligations change. The NAIC recommends reviewing coverage as needs change; a policy that was adequate when purchased can become inadequate after a birth, job change, divorce, home purchase or large change in earnings.

An illustrative calculation (not a recommendation)

The following example shows the mechanics only. The figures are hypothetical and are not a coverage rule.

  1. Assume a household decides it would need $45,000 per year of support from the insured person, rather than the person’s full gross salary.
  2. The household chooses a 15-year support period, based on the age of its youngest child and its planned independence milestone. Income support would therefore be $675,000 before adding other goals.
  3. The family adds a $240,000 mortgage balance, $20,000 for final expenses, and $65,000 for a defined education goal. The total need estimate becomes $1,000,000.
  4. It identifies $150,000 of existing individual coverage and $50,000 of savings that it has specifically designated for these needs. The estimated gap is $800,000.

This example excludes investment growth, inflation, taxes, changes in spending and the timing of payments. A household may model those factors with a qualified adviser, but the basic discipline remains the same: define the need, period and resources instead of selecting a round number first.

Can workplace life insurance fill the gap?

Include employer-provided insurance in the inventory, but do not assume it is sufficient. The NAIC Buyer’s Guide warns that workplace coverage is usually less than needed to meet a worker’s financial obligations. It may also be unavailable or non-portable when employment ends.

Read the plan certificate or summary plan description to verify:

  • The actual death benefit and any age-related reductions
  • Who is eligible and when coverage starts
  • Whether the benefit is a flat amount or tied to salary
  • What happens after resignation, layoff or retirement
  • Whether conversion or portability is offered, and under what terms

Count workplace coverage only for the period and amount the documents support. If losing a job could also mean losing the insurance, a separate policy may be needed to protect a long-term obligation.

Term versus permanent insurance

Policy type affects whether the coverage lasts as long as the need and whether the premium can be maintained. NAIC describes the broad differences as follows:

Feature Term insurance Permanent insurance (including whole life and universal life)
Coverage period A defined period Longer-term protection, subject to policy terms and keeping the policy in force
Early-year premiums Generally lower in the early years Generally higher because of the savings element
Cash value No cash value May include cash value
Planning fit Often considered when the need has a known end date May be considered when a longer-lasting need and the premium commitment fit the household

These are general characteristics, not guarantees for every contract. The practical choice depends on the required death benefit, the years dependents need support, the policy’s guaranteed and non-guaranteed terms, and the premium the household can maintain. A lower initial premium is not useful if the policy ends before the obligation or becomes unaffordable.

Questions to ask before choosing or changing a policy

When comparing actual policies, use the same coverage-gap estimate for each and ask:

  • Does the death benefit cover the estimated gap, or only part of it?
  • Does the coverage period match the years dependents or obligations need support?
  • Which premiums and policy values are guaranteed, and which depend on assumptions?
  • How is any cash value described, and what happens if premiums are reduced, missed or stopped?
  • Can existing workplace coverage continue after a job change?
  • What are the policy’s minimum guarantees, premium schedule and conditions for keeping coverage in force?

NAIC consumer materials specifically encourage questions about premium schedules, cash value, changing policy values, guaranteed minimums and the coverage period. Obtain the contract and illustrations, not just a verbal summary.

Common ways families misjudge “enough”

Relying on a salary multiple alone

Some experts suggest an income multiple, but the NAIC notes that working through the person’s specific questions produces a more accurate amount. A multiple can be a starting prompt, not a universal answer.

Replacing gross pay without examining spending

Gross salary, taxes and household spending are different measures. Decide which one the benefit is intended to support and record that choice.

Ignoring unpaid work

Childcare, transportation, home maintenance and other services supplied by the insured person can create real costs after death even when they do not appear as salary.

Counting coverage that may disappear

Employer insurance can end with employment, and a policy may have conditions that reduce or terminate benefits. Verify the documents and include only dependable amounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failing to update the estimate

A new child, a larger mortgage, a change in earnings, a divorce, a completed education goal or a job change can alter both needs and resources. Review the calculation after those events and periodically thereafter.

A practical review checklist

  • Write the annual support amount and explain why it is not automatically the full salary.
  • Set a support end point tied to the household’s actual obligations.
  • List mortgage, debts, final expenses, childcare, education and other chosen goals separately.
  • Verify individual and employer policy benefits in current documents.
  • List savings, spouse income and possible survivor benefits only when the household expects to use them and understands their uncertainty.
  • Subtract dependable resources from the total need to identify a gap.
  • Check that the policy type and duration match the need and that premiums are sustainable.
  • Repeat the review after major family, employment, debt or income changes.

What the death benefit can—and cannot—promise

A death benefit can provide a pool of money to replace some income, retire selected debts and fund specified goals. It cannot guarantee that the family’s standard of living, investment returns or future earnings will match the insured person’s path. Inflation, taxes, investment choices, policy terms and changing family needs affect what the money ultimately accomplishes.

The strongest estimate is therefore transparent rather than exact: it shows the support period, obligations, resources and assumptions that produced the number. When those inputs change, the answer to “Is it enough?” changes too.
