No. Current Just Dance editions do not require a separate console camera. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, use the free Just Dance Controller app on a compatible smartphone; Nintendo Switch also supports a Joy-Con. Just Dance 2026 adds Camera Controller mode, which uses the smartphone’s camera to track one player without any extra accessory.
What you need to play Just Dance
The control method depends on your console and whether you want handheld motion control or camera-based tracking. A dedicated PlayStation, Xbox or USB camera is not part of the current requirement. The free Just Dance Controller app is the main cross-platform gameplay controller, while Nintendo Switch owners have the additional option of using a Joy-Con.

Handheld phone mode
In the standard app mode, you hold a smartphone running the Just Dance Controller app while you dance. The phone supplies motion-controller input to the game. This is the supported gameplay controller on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it is also available on Nintendo Switch.
#1 Best Overall
- Brand video game Ubisoft.
- Color: Multicolor
- Dimensions: 10.5 x 17 x 1.2 cm.
- Reference: S71010221.
- If what you want is quality at the best price do not keep looking!
The app is not the same as using the phone’s camera. In handheld mode, the phone acts as a motion controller; you do not need to point its camera at yourself. Keep a secure grip and leave enough room to move without throwing the phone.
Camera Controller mode in Just Dance 2026
Just Dance 2026 introduces Camera Controller mode. You place the smartphone where its camera can see you, and the game compares detected movement with the choreography on screen. Ubisoft describes the feature as independent of the console, allowing it to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and, for the first time, on Switch and Switch 2.
This mode still requires the free Just Dance Controller app. Xbox Wire stated on 14 October 2025: “A smartphone with the free Just Dance Controller app is required to track your moves including in the Camera Controller Mode, no additional accessories required!” In other words, the camera is in your phone; there is no separate camera to purchase or connect.
Camera Controller is single-player. It is therefore useful when you want hands-free movement tracking for one dancer, but it is not a replacement for a multi-player controller setup when several people are playing together.
Rank #2
- Multiplayer mode allows you and a friend to let loose simultaneously and show the crowd how to really dance
- Compare each other's score on each song to see who's the best dancer
- Watch the background change as you perform progressive moves
Joy-Con mode on Nintendo Switch
A Nintendo Switch Joy-Con is the official physical motion-control route on Switch. You can hold the Joy-Con while playing instead of relying on a phone. This is the clearest choice for a Switch owner who wants a supported handheld controller and does not want to use a smartphone.
Camera Controller remains optional on Switch and Switch 2. Choosing a Joy-Con does not require activating the phone-camera feature, and choosing Camera Controller does not remove the Joy-Con option where the edition supports it.
How to set up Just Dance without a dedicated camera
Set up the Just Dance Controller app
- Install the free Just Dance Controller app on a compatible Apple, Android or other supported smartphone.
- Start the Just Dance edition on your console.
- Choose the phone-controller option when the game asks how you want to play.
- Follow the pairing instructions shown by the game and app. Keep the phone and console on the connection that the on-screen instructions require.
- Hold the phone securely and begin a song. The phone supplies the motion input while the television displays the choreography and score.
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, this app route is the official gameplay-control method. The standard console controller can still be useful for selecting menus, but it is not the motion-scoring device.
Use a Switch Joy-Con
- Wake and pair the Joy-Con with the Nintendo Switch.
- Launch the compatible Just Dance edition.
- Select the Joy-Con control option if the game presents more than one controller method.
- Hold the Joy-Con in the hand indicated by the game and leave a safe amount of space around you.
- Start the song and keep the Joy-Con oriented as instructed so its movement can be recorded.
This route avoids phone setup entirely. It is available on Switch editions that support Joy-Con play; the 2026 release also has a backwards-compatible route on Switch 2.

- Over 40 crazy fun dances created by real choreographers and led by real kids
- Younger kids will love dancing to their favorite TV shows, including The Wiggles and Yo Gabba Gabba
- Play with up to four players cooperatively, head-to-head and challenge others for the high score!
- Dance Party Mode lets kids continuously play through all the dance songs without stopping! No need to navigate menus!
- Progression tracking allows parents to log calories burnt, time played, and a playlist of their child's favorite songs
Use Camera Controller mode in Just Dance 2026
- Install or update the Just Dance Controller app on your smartphone.
- Open Just Dance 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch or Switch 2.
- Select Camera Controller mode from the available control options.
- Place the phone so its camera has a clear view of the single player. A stable surface or mount is preferable to holding the phone while it tracks your body.
- Follow the app and game prompts to connect the phone, grant any requested camera access and begin calibration or detection.
- Stand where your body remains visible, then start the song. The phone camera tracks movement while the game displays the routine.
The exact prompts can vary by platform and software update. If the game cannot see you reliably, improve the phone’s position and lighting before buying any accessory; Ubisoft’s documented design does not require an additional camera.
Can the PS5 or Xbox controller play the songs?
Not as the official motion-scoring controller. Ubisoft’s current compatibility information lists the PS5 DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controller for menu navigation. They can help you move through menus or select options, but the documented gameplay input on those platforms comes from the Just Dance Controller app.
This distinction matters because a controller may appear connected and still fail to score dance movements. If a DualSense or Xbox controller navigates the interface but does nothing during a routine, that behavior is expected rather than evidence that the console camera is missing. Switch is different because its Joy-Con is an official motion-control option.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your situation | Best-supported choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You own a Switch and want a physical handheld controller | Joy-Con | It is the native motion-control route and does not depend on a phone. |
| You own PS5 or Xbox Series X|S | Just Dance Controller app | It is the listed gameplay controller for those platforms. |
| You want hands-free tracking for one dancer | Camera Controller in Just Dance 2026 | The smartphone camera tracks the player and needs no extra accessory. |
| You want several people to dance on a PS5 or Xbox | Compatible phone-controller setup for each supported player | The standard console controller is for menus, and Camera Controller is single-player. |
| You do not want to use a phone on Switch | Joy-Con, where supported by your edition | It provides a supported alternative to the app. |
There is no honest requirement to buy a dedicated camera for these current platforms. The practical purchase decision is whether a Switch owner wants an available Joy-Con; PlayStation and Xbox owners should plan around the phone app instead.

Online multiplayer, Just Dance+ and account requirements
Local control and online access are separate requirements. Ubisoft’s support documentation says online multiplayer and Just Dance+ access require a Ubisoft account linked to the platform account plus the relevant console subscription:
- Nintendo Switch: Nintendo Switch Online.
- PlayStation 5: PlayStation Plus.
- Xbox Series X|S: Xbox Game Pass.
These requirements can vary by region and edition. A phone can control a local game without changing the subscription rules for online features, and owning a camera does not bypass account or platform-service requirements.
Troubleshooting controller and camera problems
The app connects, but the game does not score movement
- Confirm that the phone is selected as the gameplay controller rather than only being connected to a menu.
- Reopen the Just Dance Controller app and repeat the in-game pairing process.
- Check that you are using the edition and platform combination supported by the app.
- Hold the phone as directed and keep your grip secure; a phone that is left on a table cannot provide handheld motion input.
The phone camera cannot track you
- Verify that you selected Camera Controller mode in Just Dance 2026; earlier editions do not gain this mode merely by installing the app.
- Place the phone so the camera can see the player and is not pointed at a wall, floor or bright light source.
- Use a stable position and enough room for the player to remain in view throughout the routine.
- Check the phone’s camera permission for the Just Dance Controller app, then reconnect if permission was denied.
- Remember that Camera Controller is single-player. A second dancer may require another supported controller method.
The DualSense or Xbox controller works in menus but not in songs
That is consistent with Ubisoft’s listed support. Use the Just Dance Controller app for gameplay on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Do not treat the menu controller’s connection as proof that it should provide motion scoring.

A Joy-Con is not being detected on Switch
- Pair the Joy-Con with the Switch before launching or joining the dance session.
- Confirm that the Joy-Con control option is selected in the game.
- Keep the controller charged and within normal wireless range.
- If the edition is running through Switch 2 backward compatibility, check that the specific 2026 release and controller route are supported after any game update.
What changed with Just Dance 2026?
The significant change is Camera Controller mode, not a new requirement for a console camera. The feature extends smartphone-based tracking to a camera view and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2 for the 2026 edition. Ubisoft’s Just Dance team describes it as independent from the console because processing begins with the smartphone camera and app.

The franchise’s older phone-controller approach also did not depend on added console cameras. In a 2015 announcement, Ubisoft said its free Just Dance Controller app let players on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U use Apple, Android or Windows Phone devices without peripherals or added console cameras. That history explains why the current setup remains phone-first, while 2026 adds a camera-based option rather than making a camera compulsory.
Compatibility and freshness notes
The guidance here reflects official information available through 18 October 2026. “Current edition” does not mean every historical release has identical menus, songs or controller support. Before troubleshooting, identify the exact game year, console and region, then check Ubisoft’s support information for updates.
Also distinguish hardware compatibility from service access. A compatible phone or Joy-Con can provide local control, but online multiplayer and Just Dance+ still follow the account and platform-subscription rules for your region. Likewise, Camera Controller availability in 2026 does not imply that every older edition can use the same feature.
