It might, but the specific claim that JPEG quality 75 at 4:4:4 beats 0.99 at 4:2:0 on red text is not established without the encoder, source image, and comparison results. The settings affect different parts of compression: 4:4:4 preserves full-resolution color detail, while 4:2:0 reduces it. That can make 4:4:4 a better choice for crisp red lettering, but quality numbers from different encoders are not directly comparable.
Why 4:4:4 can preserve sharper red text
JPEG can represent an image using luminance (Y), which carries brightness detail, and chroma (Cb and Cr), which carries color information. This separation lets an encoder reduce color resolution while retaining more luminance detail.
With 4:2:0 sampling, chroma is recorded at half the horizontal and half the vertical resolution of luminance. During decoding, the lower-resolution color channels are expanded to match the image. In 4:4:4, chroma remains at full resolution. The distinction matters for red text because its edges are often sharp changes in color against a different-colored background. Reduced chroma resolution can make those boundaries look blurred or fringed, even when brightness-defined detail remains comparatively clear. The U.S. government-hosted Compression Study describes 4:2:0 as a common JPEG approach, and a 2025 TU Wien thesis explains the sampling distinction.
The government-hosted study’s model describes reducing a 24-bit RGB raster to 14 bits per pixel with 4:2:0. That is a technical model, not a predicted file size for any particular image or a result from the quality-75-versus-0.99 comparison.

Why quality 75 and 0.99 do not settle the comparison
Quality controls and chroma sampling are separate compression choices. A quality value generally influences quantization, while 4:4:4 or 4:2:0 determines how much chroma detail is retained. A higher quality value cannot be assumed to restore color information already discarded by subsampling.
The numbers 75 and 0.99 cannot be compared reliably without knowing the encoder and its quality scale. The result also depends on the image, dimensions, color profile, encoding settings, and what “beat” means. No published result in the available sources tests this exact pair on a specified red-text image, so the outcome is unverified—not disproven.

How to make a fair comparison
Use a controlled comparison rather than relying on the two quality labels. Keep the source and processing conditions constant, and assess both visual quality and storage cost.
Recommended Free Tools
- Start with the same source image and keep its dimensions and color profile unchanged.
- Encode both files with the same encoder and version where possible. Record the quality value, chroma sampling mode, and any other relevant settings for each output.
- Decode both files under the same conditions and view them at the intended display size. Compare red-edge color fidelity, thin-stroke legibility, and luminance detail separately.
- Record both output file sizes. If using an image-quality metric, name it and consider what it measures: a score for overall similarity may not indicate whether small red lettering remains readable.
- Confirm the encoded files actually use the intended sampling modes; a quality slider alone does not show whether chroma was retained at full resolution.
This process can establish which file works better for a particular image and workflow. It does not make the quality numbers universal across encoders.

Which format or setting to choose for text graphics
- Choose 4:4:4 JPEG when JPEG is required and preserving sharp, saturated color edges is important. It can reduce chroma-related blur or fringing, but does not guarantee a better result for every image or quality setting.
- Choose a lossless format such as PNG for screenshots, logos, or text-heavy graphics when retaining exact edges matters more than using JPEG.
- Use 4:2:0 JPEG when smaller files are the priority and any loss of color-edge sharpness is acceptable for the intended viewing size.
The technical guides The Compress JPEG and Salivity describe colored-text artifacts and recommend full-chroma or lossless approaches where edge fidelity matters. The Compress JPEG guide identifies MozJPEG and ImageMagick as desktop encoder options with sampling controls; check the interface and resulting file for the version you use.
