No. Inscryption’s single-player campaign does not appear to need a continuous internet connection on Steam. You do need to sign in, install the game and launch it successfully while connected, then configure and test Steam Offline Mode before travelling or losing access. Steam lists Inscryption as single-player, and SteamDB records no internet requirement for either single-player play or setup. Those SteamDB fields are third-party metadata rather than a direct developer guarantee, so testing your own installation is still the safest check.
The short answer: the game can be played offline after Steam is prepared
Inscryption is a digital single-player game from Daniel Mullins Games, published by Devolver Digital. Its official description presents it as a combination of deckbuilding roguelike systems, escape-room-style puzzles and psychological horror. None of those core activities implies an online multiplayer or server dependency.
Steam’s store information identifies Inscryption as single-player. SteamDB’s app record reports requires_internet_for_singleplayer 0 and requires_internet_for_setup 0. Together, those records support the practical conclusion that the installed game itself is not expected to demand a live connection every time you play.
The important qualification is Steam-client preparation. An account or installation that has never authenticated on a particular computer may not be ready to start games without contacting Steam. Connect first, launch Inscryption, switch Steam to Offline Mode and verify that the game starts and loads a save while disconnected.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation says, “We strongly recommend all singleplayer content is accessible without an Internet connection.” That is a general recommendation to developers, not an Inscryption-specific promise. The app-specific SteamDB fields and Steam’s single-player listing are the more direct evidence for this particular title.
Why Steam may still need a connection before your trip
There are two separate questions:
- Does Inscryption’s gameplay need a server? The available app information indicates no for its single-player mode.
- Can this Steam installation authenticate and launch while disconnected? That depends on whether Steam has already signed in, cached the account and prepared Offline Mode on that computer.
SEGA’s Steam Offline Mode guidance, updated March 20, 2025, states that Offline Mode lets you play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time. It also says you must connect to Steam and test each game first so the account and machine are configured. This is why a game that works offline for one person can fail for another who unplugs a newly installed computer without testing it.

How to prepare Inscryption for offline play
Complete this procedure while you still have a reliable connection.

- Sign in to the Steam account that owns Inscryption. Use the same account you will use while travelling. If Steam asks for an account check, complete it while online rather than postponing it.
- Install Inscryption completely. Wait for the download and any update to finish. Starting the game from an incomplete installation does not prove that the offline copy is ready.
- Launch the game once while connected. Reach the main menu and, if you already have progress, load a save. This gives Steam an opportunity to validate the installation and lets you catch missing files, first-run prompts or controller issues before you leave.
- Close the game normally. A clean exit gives the client and game a chance to finish writing local data.
- Enable Steam Offline Mode from the Steam client. Open Steam’s account or client menu and choose the command to go offline. The wording and location can vary with the desktop client version; select the option that confirms Steam will restart or continue without reconnecting.
- Test the disconnected state. Turn off Wi-Fi, unplug Ethernet or otherwise disconnect the computer. Do not merely leave Steam online and assume the result will be the same.
- Start Inscryption and load the game. Confirm that the title reaches its main menu and that an existing save can be opened. If you can, make a small test change, exit, restart while still offline and verify that the change remains.
If the test succeeds, you have checked both layers that matter: the game’s own offline behavior and Steam’s ability to launch it without a network session.

For an extended trip, treat the offline test as more important than an assumption about cloud behavior. If a particular save matters, keep a separate backup using the normal file-backup tools available on your operating system, and avoid switching between multiple computers until you understand which copy contains the latest progress.
Troubleshooting when Inscryption will not start offline
Steam asks you to connect
Return online and sign in to the owning account. Confirm that Inscryption launches normally, then use Steam’s Offline Mode command and repeat the disconnected test. A computer that has never completed this sequence may not have the credentials or client state required for offline startup.

The game is missing after you disconnect
Check the connected installation first. If Steam shows an update, download it before going offline. Also verify that you are using the same Steam account that purchased or activated the game; an offline client cannot correct an account mismatch by contacting the store.
Steam starts, but the game reports an update or validation problem
Reconnect, let Steam finish pending downloads, and launch Inscryption once more online. Do not begin an offline trip while a download, patch, installation or file-verification task is waiting. After it completes, repeat the Offline Mode test from a clean restart.

A save is not visible offline
Reconnect and determine whether the expected save exists on the computer or only in Steam Cloud. Steam identifies Cloud as a feature, but the reviewed information does not define Inscryption’s exact conflict-resolution behavior. Before travelling, load the save you intend to use while online, close the game normally and confirm that the same save appears after the offline test.
You changed computers or operating systems
Offline readiness is machine-specific. A successful test on a desktop does not configure a laptop automatically. Install and launch Inscryption on the second computer while connected, switch that Steam client to Offline Mode and test again there.

- Perform the setup at home or another location with dependable internet, not at the station, airport or hotel.
- Leave enough storage for the complete installation and any update Steam presents before departure.
- Carry the computer and controller configuration you tested; changing input hardware can introduce a separate problem that is unrelated to internet access.
- Start Steam before disconnecting and confirm that it visibly reports Offline Mode rather than waiting for a network response.
- Keep the computer powered long enough to close the game normally after each session so local progress has time to be written.
- When you reconnect, allow Steam to synchronize normally before opening the game on another computer. Because the reviewed sources do not describe Inscryption’s cloud-conflict rules, avoid assuming that the newest-looking timestamp will always be the copy you want.
Does the game’s genre change the answer?
Inscryption’s deckbuilding, puzzle and horror elements can make it feel like a highly authored, connected experience, but the official description does not identify an online service as part of its core loop. The relevant distinction is whether the installed single-player content calls a server during play. Steam’s classification and SteamDB’s app fields indicate that it does not require that connection.
