Immich can search a self-hosted photo library and group faces, but it did not create the automatically assembled “Memories” highlight reels that one user wanted. That gap—not basic photo management—was the reason a home-built Google Photos alternative fell short.
What was the missing feature?
In an August 29, 2026 Yahoo Tech republication of an Android Police article, Nimrod Aldea described running Immich on a 270 GB photo-and-video library. He said its contextual search and face grouping handled two of the three Google Photos strengths he cared about. The absent third was “Memories”: old photos and videos automatically surfaced and stitched into highlight reels. That is one author’s account, not a test showing how every library or household will fare. Read the article.
So the short answer to “Does Immich have Memories like Google Photos?” is that the reviewed Immich documentation describes search and face recognition, but not automatically generated memory reels. Searchable photos and curated, automatically presented recaps solve different problems.

Search by what a photo shows
Immich documents contextual search using CLIP, which can match freeform descriptions without requiring the same words to appear in the photo’s metadata. The documentation also lists filters and search options for faces, OCR text, locations, camera, time frame, and tags. Immich’s search documentation describes how these options work. The article’s example queries—“you eating pizza,” “the entire family,” and “plant”—are examples from Aldea’s experience, not benchmark results or a promise of accuracy for another library.

Group faces into people
Immich says it detects and groups faces so users can name people and search for them. Face processing relies on machine-learning models and clustering; a grouping is not the same as a human-verified identity. The project explains the feature in its facial recognition documentation.
Video face detection has a specific limit
Immich’s FAQ says face recognition runs on generated thumbnails. A person must appear in a video thumbnail to be detected under that documented behavior; do not assume Immich scans every frame of every video for faces. See the Immich FAQ.

What running Immich at home involves
Self-hosting shifts responsibility from a hosted service to the person operating the server. Immich’s requirements recommend at least 6 GB of RAM for smooth use and local SSD storage for PostgreSQL database files. It estimates that generated thumbnails and transcoded video add 10–20% to a photo library’s size on average; actual needs can vary with the library and configuration. These are project recommendations and an average estimate, not guarantees. Check the current requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Plan for database storage, library overhead, updates, and recovery—not just the disk space occupied by your originals. A self-hosted library gives you control over where files live, but it does not automatically create a safe backup.

Moving a Google Photos library to Immich
Immich’s quick start describes using Google Takeout with immich-go to import existing Google Photos content, and enabling mobile backup for photos on a phone. The exact workflow can change, so follow the project’s current quick-start guide when setting up or importing.
Importing is only one part of the migration. Immich warns that its built-in database backup contains metadata and user information, not the original image and video files. You must separately back up the files in the upload location. Decide how those originals will be copied and how you would restore them before treating the server as the sole home for your library.

Is Nextcloud Memories another option?
Memories is an app for Nextcloud, so it may be relevant if you already run Nextcloud. Its configuration guide recommends Preview Generator for performance, Nextcloud Photos for albums, and Recognize for AI tagging, and it also documents Google Takeout metadata migration. Those documented components do not, by themselves, establish that it produces Google Photos-equivalent highlight reels. See the Memories configuration guide.

How to decide whether Immich fits your use
- Choose based on the missing experience: If automatically resurfaced, edited recaps are central to how you enjoy a photo library, Immich’s documented contextual search and face grouping do not fill that particular role.
- Consider it for organization and retrieval: Its documented search options and face grouping may suit someone who wants to find existing photos and manage a library on infrastructure they operate. Individual results depend on the media and processing.
- Account for ownership and upkeep: You take on server resources, storage planning, software operation, and separate backup and recovery for original media.
- Keep alternatives in scope: If you already use Nextcloud, its Memories app is worth evaluating on its own documented features; do not assume feature parity for automatic highlight reels.
